In a recent interview Greta Gerwig hinted that production for Narnia wasn’t slated to begin until later this year. While the WAG and SAG strikes played a big part in that, sources close to the production indicate that this delay could be beneficial to the final product, as both Gerwig and Netflix are keen on adapting the Narnia books as an animated series.

“Films such as Sony’s Into the Spider-Verse, Netflix’s Klaus, Dreamworks Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and have really raised the bar for animated features and set a new standard for storytelling in that medium, while Angel Studios crowdfunded The Wingfeather Saga is causing industry insiders to take notice” says Charles Jones, an animator on the project. “Theres even similar buzz for WB’s upcoming animated feature The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim. Gerwig and Netflix are hoping that they can do the same with the Narnia series.”

“Fantasy has become a very crowded genre in live action, with no shortage of live action properties including Netflix’s Witcher, Disney’s Percy Jackson and The Santa Clauses, Amazon’s Rings of Power, and the Harry Potter series coming to Max,” said Frank Ollie, a character designer. “What we’ll be doing with Gerwig will really set these stories apart, not only from previous Narnian adaptations, but form other shows in the genre and push the envelope.

“The Narnia we’re envisioning is something so lush, vibrant and beautiful” says Bruce Dini, a background supervisor for the project. “ It just makes since to animate it. And then when you juxtapose Narnia with a London of either the late 19th Century in the Magicians Nephew or World War II, those sharp contrasts are even more noticable.”

“The fantastic creatures are really going to capture the imagination,” says animator Dante Konietzko.

“And they blend so seamlessly with the real animals like Leopards, bears, lions, beavers, mice and badgers that fill the series,” adds creature animator Gilroy Filoni. “Just wait till you see Aslan. One look at him and you’ll say ‘Mufasa, who?’”

While it may be somewhat disappointing to fans that the next series won’t be live action, there certainly are some benefits to animation. For one thing we’re less likely to have this time around is for the kids age out of the rolls too soon due to lag time between productions. Sources close to the production indicate that Netflix is keen not to have a repeat of Stranger Things where the kids seemed to get too old for their rolls between seasons. It also means that height and age for the Jadis actress won’t be a factor in casting choices.

“Greta’s really excited about it, “said voice director, Bill Leland. “She’s hoping it could allow us to get a classic “Disney Princess” to voice Jadis, someone like Jodie Benson (The Little Mermaid), Linda Larkin (Aladdin), Paige O’Hara (Beauty and the Beast), Ming Na-Wen (Mulan), or even Idina Manzel (Frozen), while we’re looking at either Robert Powell (Jesus of Nazareth), Diego Morgado (The Bible, Son of God) or Jonathan Roumie (The Chosen) for the voice of Aslan.”

Most exciting is that the production has even sent us some concept art for the characters below!

So, they are definitely starting with Magician's Nephew, right?
They are referencing The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe in the article, and the concept pictures are obviously Lion Witch and the Wardrobe. As much as I love and would love to see an adaptation of The Magicians Nephew, I don't think it is a strong one to start the series with, at least if they are targeting people who have not read the book. First time for Narnia and I would now with the order the books were originally released in. Second time I would alway go chronological.

If the artwork is real, Jadis completely lacks the menacing giantess of a woman she is supposed to be:

  • Height and Build: Jadis is incredibly tall, towering over the children and other characters. She has a commanding and statuesque presence, often making others feel small in her presence.
  • Facial Features: She has a beautiful, but severe and cold face. Her beauty is described as both regal and intimidating, with sharp and striking features.
  • Skin: Her skin is pale, almost white, which enhances her otherworldly appearance.
  • Eyes: Her eyes are described as being particularly remarkable—bright, piercing, and full of a powerful, mesmerizing quality.
  • Hair: Queen Jadis has long, rich, black hair that adds to her imposing and majestic appearance.
The image has her looking like a soft Disney princess. Both images look like AI generated images to me.

Ok so the original post was an April fools joke. Sounds like the production is going to be The Magicians Nephew. A name was leaked that was pulled back quickly, but it was marked he was playing Diggory Kirke. and the actor was a young actor so not an aged Kirke for Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. It is all just rumours based on some release online that is no longer there. I certainly would love to see this adaptation if they can stay clear of humanizing Jadis and getting deep into her back story and how she really has reasons for why she is so nasty.

Even if they manage to not do that horror, to be optimistic 9 out of 10 they'll find a gizilion other little horrors to twist in. They could turn a good story into a movie nightmare via: ramming in a romance, deforming characters beyond recognition, unsuitable casting, crazy plot twists...😱

The streaming series "Rings of Power" spat in Mister Tolkien's face by changing the elegant and virtuous Galadriel into an abrasive misandrist, who wants to humiliate males because diversity and girl power and modern audiences and Handmaid's Tale and fight the patriarchy. Today's entertainment industry is overflowing with revisionists, whose motto is "If it isn't broken, break it!"

To hear how a genuine grownup dissects today's assault on classic franchises, search YouTube for a video series called "The Fourth Age."

I think it's not so much a matter of breaking it as much as going "If it isn't broken, burn it down and salt the ground a la the siege of Carthage so nothing can ever grow again".

A YouTube channel called Clownfish TV is now commenting about the Gerwig project. I won't link it, because naughty words. But the channel offered the most detail I have yet seen on the subject. What I saw and heard convinces me that Gerwig DOES want to destroy everything Mister Lewis built.

The discussion got me annoyed AT THE VIDEO CHANNEL, though not as much as Greta Gerwig annoys me. Firstly, because they call Narnia "an allegory." For the trillionth time, NO, Aslan is not supposed to be a symbol of an analogy of a parable of a suggestion of a hint of somebody SORT OF like Jesus; Aslan IS Jesus, assuming the form of a lion.

Moreover, Clownfish TV refers to the unsupported notion that Susan, by losing Narnian royal status, was LOSING ETERNAL SALVATION. Does a Christian running a business corporation lose his place IN HEAVEN because he gets voted out of his office by shareholders?
