After her lesson, Juno wandered to the lobby, where her mother was waiting. Leslie Jackson was chatting with the receptionist, Mimmy, when she waved Juno over.
"Catherine, Mimmy was just telling me - " Leslie began.
"Mom," Juno pressed. "Don't call me that. You know I hate it."
Leslie laughed but her eyes, locked with Juno's, remained cold. Her laugh ended suddenly and she turned back to Mimmy and said, "Catherine is auditioning for Colors tomorrow at the Broadway Theater."
"Yes, she told me," Mimmy said, smiling at little, but clearly itching to get back to work. She looked relieved when the phone rang and she had to answer it.
Juno hurried out of the building and waited for Leslie to come out behind her. After a minute, she came out wearing a cruel snarl.
"Catherine-Ingrid Wayland," she growled. "You will never, ever correct me in public again, do you hear?"
Juno rolled her eyes. "Can we just go? I want to get my homework done and get to bed early."
Leslie frowned but shook her head. "You are just lucky that I'm still letting you go tomorrow."
"Whatever," Juno muttered and set off, her mother in her wake.
