RECAP Be prepared.... it's long
Worth getting lost in London for!!
London, Ohio, that is. Friday morning my mom and I left our hotel in the small town outside of Columbus… about halfway on our trip… and we got totally lost. It got us going an hour later than we wanted, but we were going all the same.
After that we had a nice long drive that ended us at Meaghann’s. There was a bit of awkwardness that came with meeting someone I’d only spoken to online and through two phone conversations, but that went away soon enough. We got a tour of her house and dropped our bags off. It was near 3:30 and Toronto was still two hours and a country away, so not too much time could be spent with hugs and hellos. We were on the road again.
There was no trouble getting Toronto and meeting everyone was the most fun I could have ever had! There were hundreds of hugs and meetings and just a lot of craic. By about the 5th time I was tackled by a fellow TH squealing “TANGY!!” I felt like a celebrity. It was hard to keep people from telling Meg and I things, as we both weren’t at the show before. But we managed to get VERY little spoiled and then we filed in.
The first thing to be said is the size of the stage. Even when covered with a curtain it was HUGE, you could tell. Meg and I could not begin to wait to see what was behind it, and what could take up a stage this size. So after what felt like ages Phil came out to talk. I love Phil; he got right down to business with the filming aspect but kept us laughing all the while.
After Phil got through our rules and regulations, and taught us how to clap on camera, the lights were dimmed and curtains opened.
Trees. That was the first thing I noticed, then not only were there trees, but a whole outdoor looking set. On the opposite side of the stage there was a well, and some very tall trees, toward the center of those trees were like medieval looking house-shack-things, with a campfire and hay-seats around it. Then on our side there was a small creek with a bridge over it and then gypsy camp. That’s truly the best way to describe it. Meg, my mom, and I exchanged looks that all said about the same thing; “What the heck is this!?”
And then, appropriately, there was lightening and thunder and it was like freaking strobe lights! I had my back against the beck of my chair and was holding on to Meg’s hand for dear life. It seemed to just keep going and going and going and then… there were dancers.
These weren’t our guys, no, that came out of the gypsy caravan and danced. They were just around 6 male dancers. Doing the most impossible to describe dancing in the entire world. Meg and I christened it the ‘gypsy tribe dance’ for lack of any better description. That’s one thing you’ll HAVE to see on the DVD to comprehend what we mean.
And then…. IN THE TREE someone else was doing the same gypsy dancing. But he was dressed differently. The other gypsies were shirtless aside from vests, but the guy in the tree had a loose white, very gypsy like shirt on. As, at the moment, Paul was the only one I could ever picture dancing like that, he was my first guess. But when he literally swung out of the tree, it wasn’t Paul. My next guess was another nameless gypsy dancer. But as they went from dancing to just kind of running on stage being gypsies, the one in white ran around our end of the stage.
It was Ryan.
Why I was surprised about Ryan being a gypsy, I still don’t know… but I was. Of course Ryan was a gypsy... It was mainly the DANCING! This is Ryan... dancing, like full out choreographed stuff here. It’s a strange thought even now.
So while I’m getting over the fact that Ryan is now a gypsy doing the sexy gypsy tribal dance stuff, the other guys appear. They all basically come out of the shack-houses. And they are dressed, well, as if the lived in a medieval town. I’m talking like tunics and stuff. And Keith… Keith was dressed like a pirate, ruffled shirt n’ all. And none of this managed to look cheesy – strange.
So after a bit of musical theatre on stage, no spoken words though, just actions, the music changes. And all our boys break into our opening song “New Day Dawning” The lyrics and powerful, strong and the tune is catchy and wonderful. It was a great piece to open up with.
After all of that the town’s people, who are four of the lads, and most of the band, including the string quartet girls, go away. And so do the shirtless gypsies. Wwe get Ryan singing “Outside Looking In” And it just fits perfectly in with the gypsy role he’s got. While, sadly, there wasn’t any dancing, he did fantastic!!!
This also introduces one of four girl dancers, two of them sing as well. The first girl here, still in “Outside Looking In” is Ryan’s ‘sister’, a gypsy like him. Meg and I nicknamed her Amy, after the character in my Fanfic’s who is Ryan’s sister. But anyways, she is introduced and even sings the chorus once in this song. She did grand.
That’s done and then the band of gypsies went completely poof, and our town’s guys come out again. All the guys are giving Damian are hard time about something, and so he gets to sing “When You Are 18” Yes, he’s 17… it still works. He gets to be mature but makes you want to squeeze him to death at the same time! Well done!
George follows it up with a similar song. Damian’s was about trying to show that he could fit in with the older guys. George’s “Life in the Old Dog Yet” was him saying he’s still as awesome as the younger guys… and he is! Love George and I loved the little gestures between the other guys and him.
Oh, and in this song, there is another play-like thing happening… where George’s “Daughter” (Really, one of the violinists) was like supposed to marry Paul, and then goes with the guitarist Neil. This is all implied with no spoken words, as George is singing. It’s really fun to watch.
So after that, Paul, heartbroken yet again, sings “Not The One”. Which is surprisingly optimistic. He’s singing about how this lovely young lady obviously isn’t the one meant for him and he’ll still be searching for that one girl that’s for him. Very romantic, and very Paul.
And THEN!!! Oh my gosh! We get “Stand and Deliver” which is Keith… crossing into Ryan territory. I mean, he was IN THE TREE and he was running all around stage singing… and then, the laugh. After every chorus came the most amazing maniacal laugh you will have ever heard. I swear it sent shivers through me! I cannot describe how strange it was to see Keith being a bad boy! It messes with ya. I tell you.
Then Amy, remember, Ryan’s gypsy sister, sings a whole song. And that song is called “The Highwayman” And she is singing about how she’s like fallen in love with Keith. And yeah, again; Amy in my stories also fell for Keith. I swear Sharon must have read my fanfics when coming up with this. Good stuff.
“Lagan Love” follows that. A very, very gorgeously harmonized song with Paul, Damian, George, and NEIL!!!! Neil gets to sing more, and does absolutely magnificent. The lyrics were either in Gaelic or I just wasn’t paying attention to them, because all I could hear was the harmonies. I loved it all the same.
“Midnight Well”, of course. Which I truly cannot explain, not because it is too complicated but because it is EXACTLY how you picture it. Just listen to the song and picture it live, and you’ve probably got it down perfectly. There was a well, and there was a pretty blonde town’s girl he gets to get VERY close with. What more do you need?
And, after that, Amy sings AGAIN! She sings a song called “Shadows Dancing” which Keith is ON stage for, though he doesn’t sing. It’s really basically showing how they are in love because while she sings they are getting quite close as well. Kind of interesting, and not my favorite for sure… But Ryan is like lurking during all of this giving Keith this look like ‘get away from my sister’. So that was fun.
Another girl sings next, Meg and I just called her ‘the girl in the white dress’, and she sings a song called “Harry’s Game” really pretty. She has a very good voice, and throughout her song, Paul comes out of nowhere and is looking at her while she sings, and it takes no genius to know what that means…
So after she is done Paul breaks into “Tender is the Night” in which he FINALLY gets the girl!! Yay Paul! And he’s being super romantic, lovely, perfect and all that stuff that’s just PAUL. I loved it, quite a bit.
We got “This was my life” after that, and that was good. That was George, lovely George, being very George-like. He’s reflecting about his life and stuff, which is really sweet and I loved it, very much. And for all of that, it wasn’t depressing. George doesn’t get a depressing song this time!
Then, Damian and Keith get to duet!!! A dream come true I tell you! It’s a cute little play off of each other throughout. D’s trying to tell Keith that he’s just about the most amazing guy ever and that girls LOOOOVE him, and Keith is singing back that, no, he’s just being a cocky idiot, and I think calls him a loser at some point. It’s very playful, very cute, and very, very hilarious.
Everybody, including the shirtless gypsies come back for “Hail The Hero (Mo Ghile Mear)” A Celtic Woman song, but with different lyrics… more manly lyrics. That was probably what I liked most about it, though I do like the girl’s version. Anyways I loved it, very much. There was more of the gypsy tribe dancing too. Meaghann and I do plan on learning it when the DVD comes out. Should be fun.
It was a great ending to the first half I must say. Everyone bows and smiled and took off running off stage in different directions. Ryan was running off across the bridge thing on our side of the stage, where meg and I were standing and screaming. He then STOPPED running and waved. (I’m sure everyone around us would say Ryan waved at them. But no, he waved at US!)
It was, in short, NOTHING we had expected – but everything we could have possible wanted… and more!
And this was only act 1.
