Hey all, this is a thread that I, smokeonthewater, Asphodel, Aitoren, Fawkes777, and JackD are starting on behalf of the topic of celebrity obsession. First of all, it is extremely unhealthy and quite fruitless to obsess over people that will most definitely never be met or acquainted with. I don't want to come off offensive, and I don't want other members to come off offensive either. This thread was created to have an intelligent discussion.

Well, there can't be much health in fangirlism, because, come to think of it, there's not much health in girlism ;-)
But in all seriousness, I agree heartily.

What was the point exactly of those pictures?
To prove your points on celebrities being too skinny.

Funny cuz I was just watching Jay Leno and he told her that she looked healthy! I'm sorry but when you can see someone's clavicles and chest like on those picture that person is not healty at all!

I personally think men dictactes what is to be attractive in their cultures. I believe when the majority of men start standing up and saying that being that skinny is not attractive, then I believe we will start seeing a change.
After all a lot of these girls dress, act and look the way they think might attract the opposite sex...

I also think race has a lot to do with it. For example, Caucasian girls obssess about being skinny and looking a certain way. Hispanics are concerned whether they have enough hips to be curvy. And African American girls are more concerned with their backside. That is the part of the body the men of their culture seem to boast about more...
If the pictures offend you then I'll delete them....

if you mean healthy as in obsessing over female appearance and weight because of this false image of beauty that society presents then no I don't think its healthy. But if you mean the way girls are fans of people like Skandar and Will then no I don't think its unhealthy. I was obsessed with Hanson when I was 13 and 14. my walls were papered with them. To be honest I'd rather see my kids obsessed with a celebrity they can't have than with the boys at their school who could influence them in a much more dangerous way. Every girl goes through a celebrity obsession just like a lot of guys do. (to be honest I don't know a single guy who doesn't think obsess over Natalie Portman. actually I know a lot of girls who think she's hot.) Its totally normal.

They don't offend me. I agree full-heartedly. We aren't meant to be sticks.

*Just like Tiff said, if it's too offensive for you, I'll take it off*

Now, I don't think this thread has the topic name "Eating disorders, so I'll stop spamming and get on topic.

Fangirlism is VERY unhealthy. Though at times it can be fun. :D

Ok so I think I got the subject of the topic wrong :D Let me try again..

I don't think there's nothing wrong with Fangirlism. Its just a phase that teens go through. I was thirteen once and swore to love a certain celebrity for all eternity  Now I look back and cringe.
But again is just a phase and it doesn't last forever....

If I had Kate Bosworth's body, I'd still obsesses over my weight and try to lose a few pounds so that I could eat what I wanted for a week, and then go back to starving, eat, starve, eat, starve. That's the only thing that would work. I'm Hispanic. and I happen to have an eating disorder. Curves are disgusting, blobby, gooey, ugh. I dont understand how anyone would want to have a huge backside, either. What is it filled with? FAT. Even muscles are gross..they're BIG. Anything big has got to go..I believe women should be petite and bony. And that's what I want to be.

Anyways..celebrity obsessing is a phase. It depends how normal it is or not..like if you happen to have a crush on a celebrity then yeah, but if it's like me, where it's only too exact and repetitive and..well..scary..then, there's a problem. It turns out I have a form of OCD. I get a new obsession every 5 months (celebrity-oriented), so, it really affends me that people are seeing it as un-healthy when it's just the way some people are and they can't change it.

This thread seems to have two topics. Let me say ...

1. Sophie is too skinny and her belief that women should be petite and bony is simply not true. Women and men alike should be height and weight proportionate. As you know, Teh Deviant, starving yourself makes you sick, sick, sick.

2. I agree with OMS that fangirlism is not all bad. It's much better to obsess on a celebrity when you are 13-16 than to obsess on real boys at school who could pose a problem with their real desires. And by checking out looks and style in celebs, girls develop a sense of the kind of boy they'll be interested in later.

I don't think "fangirlism" is necessarily harmful. If it invades on someone's ability to make friends in the real world or to develop into a healthy, well rounded woman, then yes it is harmful for that person.

There is a wonderful quality to the human psyche, the ability to suspend disbelief. That allows us to immerse ourselves in science fiction, romance, and mystery novels. That allows us to enjoy Star Wars without obsessing over the fact it was actually all shot on Earth.

Part of the fun of being a fan girl is ignoring the obvious fact that most people won't ever actually meet Skandar Keynes or William Moseley, much less be romantically involved with them. That doesn't mean fangirls don't know this, but it's part of the fun of being a fangirl to temporarily ignore this and not dwell on it just because it's so. This is suspension of disbelief, a normal part of human daydreaming.

Sorry, everyone, it seems as though tinman has extremed the question we were attempting to put out in this thread and discuss. One of the questions is whether or not it is appropriate or not to be posting text and pictures of celebrities in signatures. Does anyone think it demotes a bit of dignity to the stars or affects/bothers others on the forum? When we feel topics have been thoroughly answered and discussed, one of us will post a new topic.

Ok I kind of understand where you are coming from so I changed it better?

First of all, All I have been hearing here is fan girl, fan girl, fan girl!
What about Boy fans? Boys have the same phase over a famous girl too.
Asphodel, proved that for me, yesterday. I don't understand why its always that the 'fangirls' are the 'unhealthy obsessors' and yet, fanboys are not.
Does that make any sense to any one?

Yes I agree :D.

Hi umm i just wanted to say this. I am a fangirl. No I am not obsessed. Yes I think Will is cute. No I do not want to marry him. I know it won't ever happen. But it's fun to meet other girls like you and share the same interests as you. Long story short, i think its ok for me to be a fan of someone. I still keep interest in guys at school or whatever, but i have friends from the Willianites who i can talk to anytime. By having those kinds of friends, i dont need guys.
And in conclusion, (you can wake up now) i think more people like being fangirls for the aspect of being a fangirl. Most of the time, theyre not out to kidnap and marry Will or Skandar or whoever. Some may be like that, but not all of us.

No, actually, none of us are like that.( about kidnapping nad what not) Some are just kidders, like Meghan (AlwaysWinter), yeah, this girl who had a banner of what seemed like William Moseley trying to lick her, which was photoshoped. She is a kidder. She told me this yesterday.
And, about there being no comment about 'fanboys' until my previous post, why do the boys who used to be fanboys act like they were right and yet, we are still wrong?

You have alot of good points. I wish I could join in on the debate. I have alot of things I want to say but I'm not very good at putting them into words .

All right, ALL RIGHT, ALLLL RIGGGHHTTYYY NOWW!

I get a hint.

There is nothing whatsoever wrong about my obsession with Mrs. Beaver. So I dream about her bringing me a cup of tea as I sit on the back porch of a cabin in Akron, Ohio at night watching the traffic on Highway I-29 humming along, white lights in one way and red lights the other....

She never returns any of my letters, so I know it's not going to happen. But I can dream about that sweet buck-toothed smile as she calls me "Tookie" and asks me how I like my smoked salmon....
