Very interesting to see a 'Downtown Abbey' thread here. As someone who works in the PBS system, I have seen an interesting effect this show has had on internal PBS Corporate Culture, discernable even at the member station level (where I work).

During this year's annual PBS Technology conference, they showed a gag video entitled 'TechCon Abbey'. They had Tea service during meetings, the PBS president would inspect the servants each morning, and a technician was upbraided for not wearing a white bowtie during a server upgrade! It was so popular among attendees that they ran it multiple times!

Oh my gosh!!!

**season three poilers ahead**
Seriously, Matthew?! What in heaven's name...? Honestly! When Mary and Baby were fine and Matthew was in his stupid car with his stupid smile on his stupid face -- and nobody had died at all and the show was almost over -- of course it was obvious that he was going to get in an accident. Lady mary can't catch a break!!! But she's better off without stupid Matthew. And maybe his stupid mother will decamp and leave the Granthams alone for Pete's sake. Oh well, I am very sad but I always thought Matthew was kind of a goof. Why would the actor have wanted out?! This is very annoying.

Supposedly he wanted out because he felt like he could 'do better' elsewhere (I heard that he was wanting to try and get into American film/tv). But personally, it was a dumb decision to leave a very successful show (and a very popular character) at a time when nothing for your future 'success' was guaranteed at all!

He was getting rather UN-handsomly dashing by the end- methinks the adorable Branson was taking over and being THE ONE

You should see Dan Stephen's new look now...
So glad he lost a bit of that chubbyness that was developing in season 3 but-i don't know- he looks a wee bit like he wants to be the villain in a film
Still got those ahhh! blue eyes...!
But as Poirot would say: 'He is the amateur with the moustache...' :D

Yuck! He was much handsomer in season 3!!! I suppose I'm one of the many fans who actually liked/loved Matthew, though I suppose it was for the best that he left if he didn't enjoy being on the show. I do love Branson, and I hope he stays on. I love his accent. :D

Whoa, I hope he finds success and happiness elsewhere then. His new look is not very becoming ... I mean, to me, I agree, he looked better on Downton Abbey. He does have pretty eyes though.

Maybe Lady Mary and Branson will get together! That would be shocking. Cuz she's kind of a snob. You know what I didn't like about Matthew, he was so ... I don't know ... like he didn't want to use his inheritance from his would-be father-in-law to save Downton Abbey, as if it were some huge principle to stand on. He was a good guy though, come right down to it. I don't know why he annoyed me. Maybe because he let Lady Mary slip away in the first place and get engaged to that no-good newspaper-man. Matthew should have tried harder ... I don't know. It will be interesting to see how things develop.

I was delighted to find a thread on Downton Abbey as I love that show. I've followed it right from the beginning. I'm dying for series 4 to start later this year :)

And I honestly couldn't have just one favorite characters. Everyone takes such a good part in the show and each has something different to bring to it. Though I do have to say I do find the Maggie Smith's character pretty funny. Oh, and I would have to say Branson is one of my fav's :p

Welcome Princess Eve! I didn't see you post before. So glad you are here, and glad to meet another Downton Abbey fan. :)

I am too. My sister and I have pretty much agreed that we're going to buy season passes since we're pretty certain we won't be able to wait until January. ;)

I might die of a heart attack if there's any more shockers like the end of series 3.

I already know about the departure of one servant, so I'm not sure that they wouldn't put in more shockers...just to keep it interesting.

Oh, and DA was just nominated for 12 Primetime Emmy awards. Yep: the main deal! Here are all twelve nominations:

Somehow I only ended up with 11, but there are 12. Maybe the makeup is a separate category?

When is the next season starting? I have been watching on my Kindle a program called "The Grand," about a hotel in Manchester, set about the same time period as Downton Abbey. But it is nowhere as good as Downton Abbey. It's more of a soap opera, even.

It started almost 3 weeks ago in the UK. I've had to stop following the official DA places on Twitter and Facebook (mostly Twitter) because they gave play by plays on every episode! I don't want to know spoilers!

And apparently they only won 1 award at the Emmys!

I have been watching the series. It's been fine and steady going so far. I'm pretty sure deaths are going to be avoided this series as it just becomes too much.
