Film continuity

Here you can discuss what you hope to see as far as the continuity in the films, and you can discuss problems with continuity in the films. Different films will have different directors, and there's bound to be things they'll overlook or not think about.

For instance, in PC they have Susan fighting with a sword and kicking tail in battles. So, for HHB, when she's not supposed to be there in the battle, how are they going to explain that? How are they going to try to make her "Susan the Gentle" again?

What other things do you think will present continuity issues? Are there things they did well in keeping the continuity of the stories with the books?

that is a problem...I never thought of that one with Susan. I am kind of disappointed that Susan isn't with Lucy like she was in teh book; I had hoped to see them riding on ASlan's back again and him delivering all those people. :(

I doubt that Susan will be kept out of the battle in HHB film. The climate today is that she ought to do everything the boys do. But I agree with Aravis that we lose something when they fail to focus on how amazing the time was the girls spent with Aslan while the boys were out doing the dirty work.

HHB in itself will be a problem if they release the films in publication order, because really, it should have been #2 film in chronological order as it happened during the Golden Years, the first time the kids were in Narnia. I can see that they couldn't stop and make that film with adult actors while the youngsters kept growing up, but it will be interesting to see when and how it is released as part of the series.

Eustace's character is going to be critical for the continuity between VDT and SC, because he will be making the transition by himself (whereas Skandar and Georgie have each other from PC to VDT), and also in VDT Eustace is not really in Narnia at all, and yet he will have to connect with Caspian and even Trumpkin from VDT in SC ... He will have to be a good actor and have good direction.

not to mention that because they'll probably release HHB further down the line, the audience who hasn't read the book will be really confused. personally, I think it should have been film #2 because it does take place before PC. (as you said) *sigh* Hollywood is going about this so topsy-turvy.

Well, they're thinking of it from a marketing standpoint and from a filming one. LWW is the most well-known and popular book so they did it first. They have to keep going with PC and VDT due to the kids' ages and then SC also due to Eustace's age. In HHB, the Pevensies are more grown up as it is a bit later in their reign and so using the young actors when they're older will work just fine. They do intend to use Georgie, Skandar, Anna, and William for that film. They'll have to fudge a lot for LB with Eustace and Jill and the Pevensies age wise, but oh well. There's no good way to realistically do these films with real people and do it in the chronological order. People can watch them that way later when they want to.

I did not know they planned to use the same actors for HHB. That will be grand. In fact, I did not know if they even planned to make HHB as a film. I have to stay better informed. If they make TLB, I wonder how they will handle the richly spiritual stuff at the end? I hope by then they have more sensitive screen writers.

Well, it will be interesting to see. Doug made them promise ahead of time that they had to stick to at least the main overarching themes of the books and in LB, it will be next to impossible to get away from the spiritual end. I'm sure they'll try to stay away from it though.

They said at Comic Con that they intended to use the 4 younger actors for HHB and LB. Granted they also said they were releasing one film a year from here on after and we know now that this isn't going to happen. I do think it's their intention to use the original actors for the later films. They'll be close enough to the right ages for it overall. A bit old for LB, but close enough.

I'm excited 'cause HHB is going to be made. :D I sure hope they keep that part with Shasta and Aslan....the kids have grown up so much just over the period of 3 years; It's scary to imagine what they'll look like in HHB

Well, they are adults in HHB, more or less (they are in Calormene because Rabadash has proposed marriage to Susan), so that should be fine, their bring grown-up should work fine in HHB.

Ed was the only one fighting the Calormens, but they may flush out Peter fighting the giants since they seem to love good battles.

At the end of LB though, it will be more difficult to explain Susan's falling away with her investing herself in battles in PC...it won't make as much sense. Unless they change it and they'd better not! LB needs to stay the way it is for my support.

HOpefully they'll be able to do that...I don't know...the films are looking more and more like they're going to be quite inconsistent with each other....and what was that about girls fighting in battle in teh book?

In the book of "The Horse and His Boy," Lucy as well as Susan is an adult woman. Though Lucy is NOT swinging a sword in close combat against Rabadash's troops, she is trained enough that she can shoot a bow as Susan does. In fact, I think she was in command of the Narnian archers at the battle. Prince Corin remarks of Lucy, "She's as good as a man"--which goes against some hostile critics' view that Mr. Lewis supposedly wanted all women chained up in the kitchen.

I think it's a real shame when they diverge from the book like they are doing in PC, but I spose there's no way they're going to please everyone because everyone imagines Narnia in their own way.

We pretty much have to take the film as a separate enitity and judge it on its own merits else we'll all be sorely dissapointed...

Like LOTR, the films took on a life of their own, and they were tremendous. I am trying to look at CON films that way, but I do hope they will not stray too far -- or, as ITW says, TLB will be pretty lame.

On one hand, it is a departure from the book for Caspian to be a near-adult as the pictures indicate. On the other hand, it never was convincing to me that a gangly ten-year-old child, EVEN in Narnia, could be effective wielding a sword against adult warriors while wearing a suit of armor.

I kinda agree. I was upset about how old Ben is, but now I see the trailer it looks good.

I have less problem with letting Susan have a sword than Prince Caspian being so old in the movie. His age is good for the next movie, but not this movie. The BCC version did a better job of casting a different actor for Caspian in the two movies. The who point is that King Peter comes back from the past to save the younger Prince Caspian. Now Peter is just the child.
