Recently there has been a lot of discussion about the Father Christmas gifts because of things from the PC movie and some of the pics coming out from DT. And I was wondering if you all think they continued to use the gifts after Caspian's reign (since we know that Caspian had no qualms about bringing the Cordial on board the Dawn Treader or using the horn). Is the shield that Lewis described in SC Peter's?
 
Sorry if this thread is old. I just noticed it. (lol) You see Susan's horn as sort of a symbol now. It was used in PC by Prince Caspian and see see her horn on the Dawn Treader. It seems to symbolize what happened in LWW more than anything. Also, perhaps Lucy will get to use Susan's bow and arrow.

Peter isn't in Narnia anymore so he can't use his sword. But, in PC he gave it to Caspian at the end so we will see if Caspian uses it in the movie.

Lucy used her cordial in PC a couple of times. She may have it stored away somewhere for the Dawn Treader, or someone saved it for her. It's an item they really need, because without it they would have lost some Narnian friends.

I don't know if Edmund will use her sword in VOTDT we will have to wait and see.
 
Edmund should use Peter's sword. If Caspian has, indeed, matured, he would let Edmund use his brother's sword.
 
Yes, but I'm sure Caspian also has plenty of swords to his disposal. Caspian should let Edmund use his brother's sword because it was special to the Pevensies.
 
After the Pevensies no longer come to Narnia, I don't think they used the gifts anymore since they didn't belong to anyone else so it would not be proper.
 
Who knows? It's kind of in the hands of the directors now. Adamson decided Caspian would retain Rhinodrin (sp?) at the end of "Prince Caspian." The cordial should be on the ship as expressed in the novel "The Voyage of the Dawn Treador." Susan's horn is not used again. Perhaps the arrows we see Lucy using are from Susan's kit? Could play into the jealousy theme, lol. Edmund had no gifts.
 
A couple of the gifts are mentioned in Dawn Treader - the cordial, as has been mentioned, and Susan's Horn, which was left with Trumpkin in Caspian's absence. Peter's sword Rhindon isn't mentioned, nor is Susan's bow and arrows. Lewis didn't forget about them, making them one of the first items mentioned when the Pevensies and Eustace come into Narnia, but I think they fade in importance to the story line. This is true of a lot of things in Treader - Lewis was transitioning the stories to more mature, tightly themed tales.
 
Actually, the reason I started this thread is not anything dealing with the movies except that I had noticed people up at arms about the use of the gifts.

The purpose of this thread was to discuss whether Stuff like the shield with the Cherry red lion in Silver Chair set the precedent for the jump that the film-makers took.

I think Lewis is the one that implied that use of the gifts was continued after the Pevensies left the Shadowland Narnia for good at the end of Dawn Treader. Like I said if you read the point in Silver Chair when the black shield switches to one with a cherry-red lion on it, the description that Lewis uses is the exact same he used for Peter's shield.

Did Caspian continue using the gifts after the Pevensies left Narnia? It is purely a book-based question.
 
I think he did. Also realize that we are not just talking about the six gifts, but also Edmund's sword and shield. While not a gift, Edmund's possessions would not have been valued any less than his siblings' items.

However, the question one should ask with Susan's bow and arrow is whether it would work with her only or would anyone who used the bow and arrow rarely miss their target?

I think the gifts would still work as intended, though I am not sure the person using them would be worthy and able to wield them.
