Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Actors: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley

Story-line: The story-line was pretty good. Jack dies, in the second, and wakes up in "Davy Jones Locker" AKA an almost sort of hell (implied by the other characters). A bunch of the main characters go to this so called "Locker" and rescue Jack. This was a great start to the movie for me. My only complaint would be Elizabeth and Will. Their relationship rocks unrealistically back and forth with them winding up getting married. Not the right direction at all.

The development of the story and characters are REALLY good, and you even get to see some old freinds (Norrington) from the first.

Acting: I couldn't take the acting of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, it all felt so lame, forced, and fake. ALL of the other acting was phenomenal, and I cannot complain past there.

Action/Violence: The action and violence of this movie is balanced PERFECTLY! There is barely ANY blood, yet its filmed in a way that the battles feels insanely real! The violence level was also perfect

Summary: I see no other points to bring up. Although at points the acting was cheesy, and there was a part here and there that just made you cringe, this was a GREAT follow up to the 2nd movie, although in my opinion not as good as the first two. If you liked the first two, I think you will like this (just make sure not to go in with really high expectations)

8-10

Orlando Bloom is not an actor I'd give props to for good acting, but I think Keira Knightley is another case [she consistently receives critical praise for her film roles]. Pirates are movies that do not showcase the excellent talent of the actors in them, except for maybe Johnny Depp [who can almost take any crappy script and make it watchable. Almost. Pirates 4 was a lost cause regardless].

I liked the third movie but I didn't like the rushed things. They kept on rushing through scenes. I thought Swann made herself a bit unbelievable when she kissed the other guy and mourned over his dead making me almost believe she was not ready for marriage yet. But hey that is me ;) Who am I to say it was like this?

Agreed about Swann

But it wasn't horribly rushed, I mean think, it was 3 hours long, they had to rush it a little! The MOST rushed movie I've ever seen is Stars Wars 3... All the jedi's died within minutes ><

The Jedi died within minutes because Order 66 had been in place for at least 10 years [why do you think Sifo-Dyas ordered the clone army to be created? Sidious had it all planned out long before the Jedi even got suspicious of the Sith being back].

MGGT, are you referring to Elizabeth kissing Jack at the end of Pirates 2? If so, she did it out of selfishness for herself and for Will. This is why I dislike those two movies; to me it's almost as if the writers forced these characters to "act out" just to make a good film. They shouldn't have made the sequels, and they certainly shouldn't have distorted Elizabeth's and Will's characters like they did. It was more unforgivable than anything else in the films.

Think of how Count Duku died. That scene went so fast. And then general Grievous died within second of their battle.. All the DUELS were what were cut short for me..

No. She kissed Norington again in the 3rd, and WENT to kiss Jack at the end

I agree with these comments, and with the comment that PoTC III was rushed. They had such a grand opportunity for an amazing story, and they failed to make it happen. The whole romance between Jones and Calypso could have been epic, and the ending could have actually made some sense rather than that whole whirlwind she turned into or whatever happened. There was a great story in there that they failed to make and instead tried to build the whole movie on Jonny Depp acting foppish, which is quite entertaining but after 2 movies of it, you're ready for something more. IMHO.

The ending of PoTC II was classic, with the return of Geoffrey Rush, and it left you dying for an epic ending to the tale ... and then PoTC III failed to deliver. It felt like the producers just wanted to get the movie made so they didn't let the writers take the time to make a great screenplay.

Well, I don't hear anyone complaining about how "rushed" the opening of Return of the King [extended edition] was with the deaths of Saruman and Wormtongue. They died in much the same way as Grievous and Dooku [obviously not the same weapons, but you get my drift]. Dooku died quickly because he did not play an important role in the film. Grievous died quickly because he also did not play an important role in the film. I say unimportant for both because the axis of the movie rested on the conflict between Anakin and Obi-Wan. Who cares about Dooku and the duel when the best of friends are now on opposite sides against each other? I could care less, frankly. Not to mention...there are the books. Episode 3 was the only well put together prequel film, and I personally wouldn't have wanted to sit through a 3 hr+ Star Wars film. No thank you. 2.5 is plenty for me.

As to Elizabeth "trying to kiss Jack": don't believe so. I forgot about Norrington, but I've seen Pirates 3 enough to know that Elizabeth never tried to kiss Jack in the 3rd film. Not sure what you're referring to there, but she never tried to.

the romance between Jones and Calypso should've been explored in Dead Man's Chest, but they wasted too much time setting up the story of Jones...which wasn't really set up IMO. Pretty sure we didn't find out until Pirates 3 that the reason for Jones' becoming all "tentacley" [as Ragetti put it] was that he didn't do his job of ferrying souls to the next world after death. Why didn't they include that information in the 2nd film? Why weren't we told in movie 2 that Calypso and Jones were romantically involved?

The problem seemed to start with 2, and multiplied with 3. and don't even get me started on the killing Will and making him captain of the Dutchman.

K its just my opinion, but I was hoping for a bunch of epic light saber battles, and they ended within seconds. But I get it, its fine, and I really did like the 3rd episode!

Ummm, I've been trying to find a YouTube video but I can't.. Its toward the end when she's about to leave, and I quote

"Gibbs: Your carriage waits, my lady! The oars are inside.
[Elizabeth bids her pirate friends farewell]
Ragetti: 'Bye, poppet.
Barbossa: MRS. Turner...
Elizabeth Swann: Jack... it would never have worked between us.
Jack Sparrow: Keep telling yourself that, darling.
[Elizabeth steps forward to kiss Jack]
Jack Sparrow: Once was quite enough!
Elizabeth Swann: Thank you."

I didn't make it up. It seems really ridiculous that she'd do that, minutes after she was married ><

On this part, I agree with you for sure! It seemed really random how they kept bring Davy up.

Grievous died quickly because he also did not play an important role in the film.

I think why some people hate his death, is because he is made to be "Unstoppable" earlier (like in the 2003 cartoon series where he is like a god and such) and then turns out to be rather wimpy

I love Grievous, possibly my favorite SW character! But I only saw the films and never read the books or saw the cartons. He was bad to the bone, loved him! Wished he never died.

OK, regarding PoTC, I think there was a hint in II that Calypso was Jones' love because she had the same heart-shaped box or locket whatever it was that he had, the little silver trinket with the same design. It was enough, if they just would have taken the time to explain it in III -- and to bring the relationship to some kind of real conclusion rather than that mess at the end of III. And see, it would have been OK for Will to be the Dutchman even if they had set that up right and shown that he really had a good purpose, to ferry souls safely to the other side, and he would be righting the wrongs done by Jones when he failed in his good mission ... But that film was just full of missed opportunities!

This is exactly how I feel! I played "Star Wars Battlefront II" for YEARS! And I always thought he was such a cool character!

But then you only see him for a little bit, and obi kills him within seconds  in Star Wars III

Frankly, I've seen I don't know how many women kiss men on the cheek out of appreciation in films, even if they were married...I doubt Elizabeth started to do it out of love. Jack redeemed himself [to a degree] by the end of 3. I think Elizabeth appreciated Jack making the sacrifice of helping Will stab the heart. There is a great deal of cinematic difference between love and appreciation, the latter being pretty obvious on Elizabeth's part. Now, if Elizabeth hadn't replied with "thank you" after the fact, it might've been read differently. But she was starting to kiss him out of appreciation [besides that, we don't know that she wasn't going to kiss him on the CHEEK], and Jack didn't trust her because of the previous time. Heck I wouldn't either. ;)

COURAGEOUS (2011)

I haven't seen this movie since October. I saw it the first time immediately after it came out, and then again in October. If I had the money, I would've bought the blu-ray/dvd combo. But, I saw it enough to remember the majority of the film.

General review: if anybody watched this movie without crying, tearing up, or at least getting choked up, they should have a heart transplant. I used at least 3 tissues during the duration of the movie, and I think it was mainly because I could identify with the feelings of the main father [played by Alex Kendrick]. The reason why being that I lost my young cousin in 2004, and I know that my aunt and uncle went through the same feelings as Adam and his wife in the film. I think this was, without a doubt, the best film put out yet by Sherwood, and for good reason. It had a great balance of action, heart, comedy, and drama all wrapped into one 2 hour film. I sat reminded of my dad each time I saw the movie, thanking God that I'd been blessed with such a godly man for a father. The part that was one of my ultimate favorites? The dinner scene between the man and his daughter [I can't remember his name!], where he gives her a ring and asks her to trust him with her heart, or in other words, asks her to trust him with her relationship decisions. "If you trust me with your heart, and trust that your mother and I will do what's best for you, I promise we will."

Acting: no, it's no Oscar nominee. But for a movie to cast mostly inexperienced people as actors, I believe that the acting is far superior to some actors even professionally trained *cough*RobertPattinson*cough*

9/10. Pick up the dvd and watch it. And, have a box of tissues nearby. You'll need it.

Very nice review! It really makes me want to see the movie. We'll see, I don't know if its my kind of movie, but you are definitely making me consider it!

Personally? I think it highlights what's wrong with America's families. We don't have enough strong fathers in our country, and that's why so many families are messed up. I think any teenage boy, young man, father, husband, etc. needs to see this movie.

Starlift (1951)

Starring:
Doris Day
Virginia Mayo
Gordon MacRae
Phil Harris
Ruth Roman
James Cagney
Gary Cooper

And others.

I really liked this film. Doris Day wasn't in the film but maybe 10 minutes, but I still enjoyed the movie anyway. I think any film that highlights the importance of entertainment for the troops during war is a good film to watch [especially with this kind of cast!]. It was funny, lighthearted, and inspiring to watch. It's definitely going on my favorite movies list.

9/10.

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

Starring: Doris Day and Jack Carson

This film marked Doris' first appearance on film, and in reality, you cannot tell. The songs she sings showcases her beautiful and heartfelt voice, even though the musical numbers are subtle (the three songs I disliked were the Spanish songs sung in Trinidad, etc). this film isn't really a comedy, though it's probably marketed that way. It's got some funny moments, but isn't overly hilarious.

I watched it because I'm working my way through Day's films that are available on Netflix. I watched this one out of order because I didn't realize she had done a film prior to 1949. Anyway, I always look forward to getting her next movie in the mail, and this one really didn't disappoint. It was pretty entertaining.

7/10.

"New Years Eve"

I watched this movie on the airplane -- so of course any language was edited. I didn't notice whether there was a lot of language, and I don't remember the rating.

It is about several different people on New Year's Eve 2011 in NYC, all in some way or another awaiting that ball drop in Times Square. In the airplane-edited version there was no sex or risque clothing (exceopt the teenaged girl showed her bra, but it was pretty covered up), so that was refreshing.

And the plot was cute. One woman was on her way to an important appointment but had a job to do first; one man had promised to meet this woman he met last new year's eve at the same place at midnight if he was still interested in a relationship with her; one teenager wanted to be let out on her own to party with her friends, and her mom had planned for the two of them to stay in together and watch the thing on TV; one woman had tickets to the best party in town but didn't want to go, so this bike messenger promised to make all her bucket list dreams come true before midnight if she would give him the tickets ... One back-uip singer for a concert was trapped in the elevator of her building with a depressed man who hated New Years Eve and had been tearing down all the decorations!

It was just cute to see how everyone ended up, and who had actually intended to meet up with whom. When I saw the previews of the film in cinema last year I thought it would be a stupid sex-farce kind of thing, so I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. Not great cinema, but not bad. ;)
