Woefulgut

'Lessan a day.' Flower thinks, 'Well not like you'll be much help to anyone wherever you go. Hmph, well fine I'll decide quickly then.'

"In case we don't speak about your decision sooner, I promise to check with you the last thing before I go over the side. One thing you could contribute is your superior ability to find your way in the dark."

Siawn passes over the now familiar deck, coming just under the spot where the cat and the marsh wiggle (his captain, he has to remind himself). He looks busy enough with a mop in his hand as he swiftly covers the ground. As he works, he whistles a tune, the very picture of cheer, and draws near he nods politely to Woefulgut and Midnight.

"Morning, Captain. What sort of crossing do you think we're likely to have? You'll be pleased to know my younger brother seems to have gotten over his bout of seasickness."

Woefulgut

"Yes, that's very good news that he is recovering, since before the sun is up I'll be swimming ashore as I explained in Post #293, so that if enemies are watching for us they'll hunt me without realizing that you're landing elsewhere. Gareth will need every hand when he takes over as captain, though the Merfolk may still be able to help some."

Flower reached her desicion.
'If I can get Mid out in time then we can come back to this boat and get a ride to Archenland and that'll be the safest place till Aslan kills the witch. Now where'd I leave Middy? Ah yes the woods beyond the Lantern Waste where we grew up. I'll head back there and see what I can find, but I'd probably be better off to go deeper into the woods as thats likely where he is, him an' the rest of the rebels.'

Woefulgut said further to Siawn, "Once the rest of you make landfall farther north, I can't say whether I'll ever be able to rendezvous with you on land. Better assume that I'm on my own. But I'm asking the Mer-people to watch the whole coastline, so that if Aslan blesses our efforts we may still find each other again at sea."

And Woefulgut was waiting for confirmation that the Mer-people were aware of his plan, so he could proceed with his predawn swim to shore, which at best should facilitate finding more human survivors, and which at least should distract enemy attention away from the Forlorn Hope as the Narnian-born man Gareth sailed farther north before landing.

OOC: Oh, sure...why not ;). The merfolk are aware of the plan...if you recall VDT, however, that might not be for the best (other than Lucy's friend the fisherdess, of course)...

Siawn tips his hat at a jaunty angle.

"Whatever you say, Captain. It's your decision, of course, and I don't like to say differently, but--"

And here the young man gives him a look of complete guilelessness. "You /are/ rather a pessimist, if you don't mind me speaking the truth, and I don't need to remind you of all the things that might happen once you make land. Wouldn't it be better to take someone else with you, just in case? They might be able to get word back if you were, and I hate to even mention it, captured by that witch I've been hearing about. I'll go with you. The two of us will have a better chance of scouting out what's what."

He nods, liking the plan better all the time. "After all, it's the least I can do with the way you've seen to me and Locrian."

OOC: Yet you did accept my premise that the Merpeople are genuinely helping Woefulgut; it was they who provided him his very ship. So he cannot do otherwise than trust them. His suspicions are directed elsewhere.

"I'm not pessimistic about eternity," replied the webfooted captain. "But this life is rough enough, that pessimism and realism are nearly the same thing. My wife IS waiting for me up in Aslan's Country; but her path of arriving there was harsh, and mine may also be. I have never known Aslan to deprive evildoers of all their cunning, so I have to assume that they are cunningly watching for us. Hence my attempt to mislead their watching.

"As for your offer to come along: thank you, normally I would welcome it. But as things are, the ship has barely enough hands to manage it in any bad weather, with every man on deck and on the job. So they can't spare you. You will stay on board and obey Gareth's orders."

Woefulgut was unsure whether this lad was aware of the cat's intention of joining him ashore; but he felt somehow that he would rather not speak of that.
