Is there anyone else who likes the movies better?

Is there anyone who likes the movies better than the books they were based on, or is it only me?

I greatly enjoy watching the characters that I have only read about come alive on-screen, I think that's why I usually like movies better than the books they were based on...besides the fact that I love watching movies in general.

By the way, if this thread doesn't belong here, please place it where it should be - and if there already is one like it, feel free to delete this.

:D

Book characters DO come alive, leastways to me.

Well I like PARTS of some movies better than books, but nobody is going to like EVERY movie better than the book, there are always exceptions though I guess.
I like the part in Narnia LWW in the river scene. I wish that Lewis had put that in the book.;):D

I'm not much of a movie or TV person, but I agree with you--I love seeing characters come alive on screen. That's why I look forward to the new Narnia movies so much--it's fascinating to actually see Lucy walk through the wardrobe.

Don't know if I'd apply that to all movies-based-on-books, but I do for the Narnia movies.

And now that I think about it, I have heard of some movies-based-on-books that have turned out horribly...but I haven't seen those. :p So I'm basically meaning CoN.

I like the movies better. Sorry, but I find that the movies are more exciting than the books. It's not that I don't like the books, I still LOVE them greatly, but I just think that the movies have more and better action than the books.

The books have as much (maybe more) action but in different ways.:)
But you can SEE action in movies... whatever.:)

That sort of misses the point. The benefit of seeing action should not have to come at the cost of "seeing" the characters and the storyline ruined. If I made a Batman movie in which Batman was the villain, sure, you would see whatever action was happening, but it would be all wrong, because Batman is supposed to be the good guy.

not sure to be honest,i think nothing beats the imagination when reading the books but there have been some great screen adaptions of my favourite books :

fave book to screen adaptions are

l/w/w and prince caspian,of course :) - chronicles of narnia -c.s.lewis

the picture of dorian gray 1945/dorian gray 2009 - the picture of dorian gray-
oscar wilde

interview with the vampire - interview with the vampire -anne rice

flowers in the attic - flowers in the attic - virginia andrews

and im looking forward to voyage of the dawn treader :)

It mostly depends on if I see the movie or read the book first. For CoN, I prefer the movies but for LOTR, I prefer the books.

@Copperfox - That's true, as most movies we see these days wreck the storyline of the books they were based on. But what about LWW, which, in my opinion, didn't stray from the book that much, if at all.

@Zella - I can see how seeing the movie before reading the books could effect which one you like better. I saw the LWW movie before reading the books. I also have seen first LOTR movie, and I haven't read the books yet.

For me it depends upon the individual book/film.
For example,in The Last Sin Eater,I like both the book & film equally.
In Twilight,I loved the book and disliked the film so much I didn't even finish it.
In Little Women,I love the film (49 version),and dislike the book.
:D

In Ben Hur I liked the movie better than the book. Why? Because the writer messed up the part where Maria is going into labour. It was completely untrue to the Bible and the movie left that part out which I'm glad because the book ruined that part for me.

In LOTR I definitely like the books better than the movies. After seeing the movies again I noticed how many characters were uncomplete and kinda ruined. But the actions are great and the ay PJ crated M-E is awesome but still the books are nr 1.

CoN, I didn't have troubles with LWW but I HATED how they ruined PC on screen. As a movie itself it was amusing but it wasn't part of CoN.

Copperfox is right. Making a movie does take the action on screen but if the storyline is ruined the movie can't be right either.

Everyone - what if the the movie was made first, and the book based on the movie? I don't know if there are any books/movies like this, but if there was, would the book still be better than the movie, or the movie better than the book?

I think that generally, when the movie comes first and they make a book to go with it, the book isn't nearly as good. Because it's just the same thing you saw on screen, only you're reading it. I don't know, it just doesn't agree with me.

I'm having a hard time thinking of examples though, because most movies are at the very least based off of a book, even with another title sometimes.

There are movies like that... I know there are, but what they are I'm not exactly sure....
Wait I got it! The Herbie movies! They made books after they made the movie! haha perfect! In that case I love both the books and the movies, but really it depends on the movie and the book and if the book is like the movie or as good as it is...
So if you base a movie off a book make the movie like the book if you base a book off a movie make the book like the movie.;)

Another example of that is Star Wars; the movies came first. I have never read any of the books so I don't know if I would like them better or not.

Vanessa, thank you for your observations; you are going to be missed here.

Fantasma, Walden's LWW movie was good; they didn't dare to start purposely ruining everything until they had an audience hooked with a good first film.

I have seen books derived from prior movies; in the cases I've seen, the book writers stick more closely to the film plot that film adapters stick to a prior book plot.

I wonder why filmmakers don't stick closer to the book when they make movies. It can't be that hard - I know they can't put everything from the book into the movie, because then it would be a million hours long, but they don't have to add stuff into the movie that isn't in the book.
