Over the weekend, I made two appearances as Santa Claus here in the Denver area. My lady elf and I wore face visors, allowing our expressions to be seen.

Introducing my elf assistant to the kids, I said: "She is the second most beautiful woman at the North Pole. First most beautiful, of course, is Mrs. Claus. Because whoever loves you truly, is the most beautiful."

Having an opportunity to talk to parents aside, I did slip in some talk about the ACTUAL reality of Christmas.
 
Advent 2022 has begun -- and I hope to set aside time each day between now and Christmas to spend time in worship and reflection to keep <the Wonder of God's becoming flesh for our sakes to show forth the riches of His love> impressed on my heart.

Hear are two ornaments I made this fall, a chubby, twine lamb and an origami cross.

Someone has to be "the bad cop," and give the solemn reminder.

Too many people say, "Let's get away from commercialism, and remember the true meaning of Christmas." But all they really do is shift to a "meaning" of Christmas which is only SLIGHTLY LESS FALSE.

From shopping and partying, two things which are not necessarily bad, they move to the proposition: "Christmas is about being nice." Well, being nice isn't bad, either, but it STILL is not the meaning of Christmas. If being nice were enough-- and if in fact we were nice consistently-- there would not have been any need for Jesus to come in mortal shape at all. To teach us? you may say. But God-inspired prophets already had been teaching people faithfully.

The human race as a collective body had, figuratively speaking, eaten the White Witch's Turkish Delight. Evil had gained a foothold in our very existence; and teaching alone would NEVER be enough to undo this worldwide condition. If I had cancer, no amount of TELLING ME what cancer is would CURE me of my cancer. Likewise, what is called "sin" was already there among us; too late for prevention.

Jesus came, not primarily to teach, but to DO something-- to overcome evil.
