its offical.... TLTWATW: best childrens book of all time!!!!!!

I like VotDT and TSC more than this book. And as for other British authors, Rowling and Burnett (The Secret Garden), their books are more impressive.

But somehow, LWW has captured the magic of many readers in a way that other books haven't in a book whose simplicity has appealed to children and adults.

DANG STRAIT!

sorry. that's my response when ever I really agree with something. actually it's normally not DANG strait...(if you know what I mean) but this is a family friendly forum... :)

anyways; that's awesome! LWW is an amazing story and a perfect childrens book. Amazing choice.

That's great to hear. I might not agree that's it's the best children's book of all time... but I'm really happy that they chose LWW instead of some stupid book I've never heard of.

If I read a hundred more children's books in my life I doubt that I'll ever read a better one than LWW. Definitely agree with this! Even though my favorites in the series are HHB and VDT, I think LWW is better in the sense that it stands on its own - CSL didn't intend to write any others when he wrote it, so he made it more of a whole story in itself.

I still remember how excited I was when I read LWW for the first time. For years I had thought certain memories were of a vivid dream I had when I was quite young - looking out a high window into a garden drenched in rain, a magical door from summer to winter, and a boy not understanding where he was and protesting, "But it's summer vacation now!" Not long ago I added them up and I realized that I was actually remembering my very first experience of Narnia! That was a funny moment. :D

Actually Malacandra, "The Golden Compass" (or rather "Northern Lights" as that was the British title) won the Carnegie Medal for best children's/young adult book and also was voted as the favorite Carnegie Medal winner of all time.

Just for a reference, "The Last Battle" won the Carnegie Medal as well.

As for me, my favorite book is "The Nevernding Story" by Michael Ende and translated from the German by Ralph Manheim.

Personally I'm not sure if it is the greatest book for children... I know which book I would choose but then again, my fav. book is not a childrens book. :p

Eragon is my favorite book, but then again, it is by an american author. LWW is probably my favorite book by a british author. Prince Caspian is pretty good too.

Understood, but my point was more that Pullman would much prefer that people ignored Narnia altogether, and it looks like that's not happening any time soon.

I personally loved VDT and LB more...but it started with LWW, so I'm glad that it was voted in as the best children's book. That's pretty amazing.

I'm not sure it's the best of all time, but I certainly loved it. It's epic but innocent and makes me happy when I read it. Classic writing style is precious; I loved how he gets straight to the point instead of filling up pages and pages with detail. They say detail is the key to the story, but here is an exception. It's a great story without filler fluff, something that some modern writers can't say about their books.
