Jane Austen?

Persuasion is really good.

And Emma...yes, I read it. I like it. But somehow I don't think Emma is as likeable a heroine as some of Jane Austen's others. She isn't as nice. :D

I know she is wierd in my book :p I think I really like P&P because it is a cool movie and a good challenging book to read, I like chanllenges :D Mr. Bingly though, cracked me up when I say the movie. And Jane and Lizzie's Mother is histarical all the time. Though I do feel sorry for Kitty some times. And Liddia is such a wierdo and a meanie some times :D

Eh, Lydia's just a feather brain. And a silly one at that! Yes, in the book Kitty gets better you know....because she starts spending all her time with Jane and Bingley and with Lizzie and Darcy - and NONE with Lydia to influence her! :p

And Emma's O.K., she's just kind of awfully matchmaking...and has a pretty high opinion of herself.

I heard that the movie "Clueless" was based on Austen's novel Emma, which you can kind of see it: the heroine is likeable, but ditzy, silly, goofy. Her heart is in the right place, but she has no sensitivity to others and doesn't even know herself very well. She is vastly different from the other Austen heroines because, for one, she has money, and because she is not the perfect "lady" we've come to expect. But still, she's a good-hearted girl, and the book is a good read.

I love Pride and Prejudice..the old movie from the 40s,and the book..only Jane Austen I've read.
I also love the movies Sense and Sensibility and Emma. Does anybody know if "Persuation" is a good movie?I haven't seen that one,yet..but hope to.:)

I didn't even know Persuasion had been made into a movie. Has anyone read Northanger Abbey? I am embarrassed to say, I was unaware of its existence until I read the prologue of Mansfield Park which mentioned it ...

I've read Pride and Prejudice and Emma, out of which I loved the former and hated the latter. I don't know. Jane Austen is just a bit too... stiff and pompous for me, you know what I mean. All that stuff about upper class snobs starts turning my stomach after a while. Despite that, I still love Pride and Prejudice and always read it when I feel depressed.

Yes, Persuasion is a movie...not bad, but no where near as good as P&P!

I've read Northanger Abbey.:D

I saw the Persuasion movie in the library a while back, but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. What about the Emma movie? The one that was made in 1996, I think? Is it any good?

I think I saw part of that one once. Not the whole thing. It seemed pretty good...though I don't think I had read the book at the time, so I didn't appreciate it quite as much... :p

I had to read "Emma" earlier this year as Jane Austen is part of my A Level syllabus.
I didn't think think I would like it at first but it was actually quite good.
The only drawback is that it is obviously written for a very specific audience and it doesn't offer much in terms of plot.
I'm not saying it doesn't have a plot, but to me it is more character driven and less plot oriented.

Still..."Pride and Prejudice" to read next!

It is... It's sort of making fun of the "Gothic" novels that became popular around then...you know, Bronte style... :D It's also not as long as some of her other stuff.

P&P is, (I think) the best Austen novel though...

Emma DOES have a plot...it is just not a wild adventure story. There's a very particular style to it. Also, if you'll notice, pretty much all of her stuff has a layer of 'social commentary' to it.

Woo hoo! I love Jane Austen!!!!!!!!!! I have only read Pride&Prejudice, but am a huge fan of hers. My favorite version of P&P is the A&E one, I did NOT like the new one. I've seen the movie Emma and am planning on reading more of her books soon. :D

The A&E one is definitely the best! :D What are you planning to read next?
