The sun was slowly sinking below the western horizon when a crowd of townspeople gathered in front of the village jail. Several of them trooped inside to collect Lieke and bring her to the gallows. A few minutes later, they came out with baffled expressions. Lieke was gone!
"Not really very nice of us to leave no sign, was it?" Lieke remarked to the Duke on a nearby hilltop.

Lieke was saved by the Duke!
