The novel is set in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee in the mid-1850s, in an isolated hollow where people (“a mingled lot [of] castoffs and cutaways and best-forgottens”) live their lives and die without ever seeing any other parts of the world. We hear the story in first-person from Cadi Forbes, a ten-year-old girl whose grandmother has just passed away at the beginning of the story. Cadi learns that a mysterious figure known as the “sin eater” will come to the funeral to take away her grandmother’s sins; furthermore, she is not to look at the sin eater, for the people of the hollow fear that, if they look at him, they will be touched by the power of evil that they believe resides in him. Cadi, however, is intrigued by the sin eater, wanting to know more about this man that their society ferociously ostracizes even as they place their hopes of eternity in him. Her interest is also motivated by a personal need for absolution, for she is desperately hoping that he can remove a recent sin that she has committed—a sin that has plunged her family into grief.
One of Cadi’s virtues is what she calls her “questing spirit,” her determination to learn the truth and the persistence to go after it until she finds it. She finds allies in Fagan Kai, the gentle son of the hollow’s ruthless unofficial leader, Brogan Kai; and in Lilybet, a small girl about Cadi’s age who can only be seen and heard by Cadi. They ask the oldest woman in the cove, Elda Kendrick, if she knows anything about the sin eater.
Meanwhile, however, a man has come into their lonely hollow. He has camped down by the river at the bottom of the hollow, and is proclaiming to all who will listen what he says is the word of God, and which turns out to be the Gospel message. Brogan Kai, claiming that the man and his message are “dangerous,” warns the cove people to stay away, but Cadi’s “questing spirit” leads her and Fagan her to the river bank anyway. What they hear changes their lives, and the cove, forever.
