OLD PEOPLE/TIMER THREAD/people who went to the prom

Now grandchildren, gather around and I'll tell you of the long ago Prom. Back in those days before your grandpa used this walker, he could shake a leg on the old dance floor. Yeah, we had all the latest dances too..the waltz, the minuet, even the Virginia reel. Most of us behaved ourselves, but a few flappers and sheiks came busting in to do the Varsity drag before we called the cops and sent them twenty-three skidoo.

Yes sir, that was back before the internet was on computers and you had to know Morse Code to send e-mail. For those of you who don't know, Morse Code is like ASCII but your access to "broadband" depended entirely on how good you were typing dots and dashes. I kind of miss the excitement that swept into town when someone made WORDS come out over that speaker. I'll never forget my first voice mail..."WATSON, COME HERE, I NEED YOU!"

We used to save media files on old hand cranked hard drives. You got some aluminum foil media, wrapped it around the disk, and while cranking it you said, "MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB WHOSE FLEECE WAS WHITE AS SNOW..." I was a pioneer in the storage of images on the hard drive. Water based ink wouldn't stick to the aluminum foil, but I developed an oil based colorant that would dry reasonably fast. I had a signature graphic at last!
