“Dang its cold, "Jack muttered to himself, the biting wind beating against his face. He watched the traffic whiz by on the nearly endless highway he had been traveling astride.

This was little different than all of the other treks he had made in and out of town, except for one thing: He was dragging along three spoiled valley-girls.

In fact the only reason Jack was stopping at all was because he was waiting on them to catch up. Apparently the had already caught up for Krista had flung herself onto the ground refusing to get up.

The rest of them followed suit and collapsed on the ground. “I’m not moving," Krista yelled trying to get a hold of her breath, “Its freezing cold and I’m numb all over."

No one else said anything because Krista had pretty much spoke they’re minds at this point.

"You cant make me get up," She began again. “No I can’t ," Jack said sarcastically as he was about to say something smart, but bit his lip instead.

Jack could see that the girls were freezing cold and Mary was even turning white.

"Oh God, I’m gonna die!" Mary muttered silently to herself. She couldn’t feel anything on her body and she couldn’t speak. Everything was a blur and it was all the she could do to throw herself to the ground.

She would have at least told Mina that she was too cold to move but her mouth wouldn’t open.

Suddenly the corners of her vision faded black and she saw a woman with long red hair and a large Rolling Stones t-shirt and jeans smiling warmly at her.

"Mom ?" Suddenly she felt stiff hands being placed on her shoulders, looking behind she saw that it was Jack placing his coat around her shivering body.

"Here you go, stay with us Mary..." he said softly. Nodding her head she wrapped the coat around her body.

Chapter XIV

She’s going into hypothermia," Jack muttered quietly to the other two," I got to get her near some heat." Krista pulled back and struck jack square face as hard as she could.

Jack struggled to keep his balance after the blow and wiped the blood escaping from the side of his mouth.

"You brought us out here and made us walk for miles without ever stopping to see if she was alright! And now...Mary’s gonna die!"

Jack shook his head and rushed towards the side of the highway, “I don’t have time for this," He Said Tiredly as he thrust Krista to the side.

His teeth chattering in the harsh cold, Jack lifted up his hand and stuck out his thumb.

"I've only got a ride twice that a can remember so pray we get lucky." There wasn’t much talking afterwards, partially because Krista was so sure that Jack would say something smart and walk off that she was taken a bit off guard.

After several minutes a blue Dodge Charger finally began to slow down as its innermost tires crunched the gravel. "There is a God," Mina muttered coldly.

"No he was already there," Jack replied equally grim, “But he’s actually through messing with us for now."

Suddenly they heard the low pitched hum of a window rolling down. A middle aged Black woman wearing a purple sweat-shirt peered out the window as she placed her coffee mug in a cup holder.

She was the kind of person that would wear too much makeup no matter how many people told her she looked much better without it, and indeed, she was wearing way too much.

"What are you kids doing out here, its freezing cold," she said in that semi-worried matter-of-fact tone that most people in they’re 30's do.

Krista opened her mouth to speak, “We---Then Jack cut her off, “Our Car broke down ma'am and we need a ride to Statesville. We would have sent for a tow truck or called the police but we didn’t have a cell phone on us, I left mine at the house."

The woman gave a sort of thoughtful grin, “In that place you can use my cell phone to call for a tow truck, and if you want then I can drop you guys off in Statesville."

"Thank very much Ma'am," Jack said in a warm tone, "I’m Jack Johansson, and this is Mina, Mary and Krista."

"I’m Janet,” She replied, “Glad help you kids out."

Jack had been worried that The woman would wonder why she shouldn’t just drop them off by they’re "wrecked Vehicle" or at least call the police.

Even then he had at least expected the girls to say something, but they hadn't at this point.

Now he had one last item to take care of: the fake phone call to the tow truck company.

---

"Yes sir. Um---its down on liledoun road--mm Hmm--Ye...Yes sir. No, thank you sir. Bye," Jack finished as he pretended to press the "end call" button.

The worst was over, and apparently Janet, and even the girls had bought it. He really hated lying, for two reasons.

It made his conscience itch and he wasn’t too terribly good at it. it appeared to him that the more he had to make up the worse he was at finishing it.

Of course, being accused of a crime he didn’t commit he was doing allot of it lately. Janet had noticed Mary shivering and helped her into the car and briskly turned on the cars heater.

Being the kind lady that she was she even produced some blankets out of the trunk and wrapped the young girl in them.

She could barely breath, but she was warming up quickly and her teeth began to un-clench.

Soon everyone had loaded into the car and Janet turned the keys in the ignition.

Jack knew from experience that long car trips usually produce conversations. Conversations about what they’re names were and where they were from.

His troubles were far from over.

Chapter XIV

So where are you guys from," came the first and( in Jacks opinion ) most dreaded question from the woman who had so kindly picked them up.

Jack knew that at least one of the girls( if not all of them) was going to spill it. I mean, why shouldn’t they, Jack thought.

I drug them halfway across the state and they could just as easily get rid of me and call the police, or use a payphone to call home.

Either way Jack was pretty sure that the trip would be cut short.

C'mon Krista just tell her the truth, an invisible voice in the back of her head seemed to say.

All she had to do was tell the whole story, the nightmare would be over and that creep would get what he deserved.

But what did he deserve? The more she thought the less sense it made for her to dislike him.

Every horrible thing she had said to him pierced her like a dart. Normally she wasn’t a hateful person but she acted that way towards Jack, but she knew why, however.

All through high school Krista never liked guys because rape was one the most committed crimes in her area.

But this guy, he was different, Krista didn’t like him and mistrusted him but she still had no reason to do or say the things she did.

Besides, even if she did tell Janet she would probably call the cops. So not only would Jack suffer the consequences but there was no telling how many cops there were like the last one.

I still don’t like him or trust him, she thought, but he really doesn’t deserve all this.

"Were from Statesville,” Krista began sheepishly," Were all pretty close friends and we were just going on a little road trip."

Mina and Mary’s mouths dropped open as they stared in shock.

"Oh that’s nice,” Janet replied, “Where about do you live?"

Krista was a caught a little off guard, she didn’t even know that Statesville was a place until just a few minutes ago.

"Oh we all live on Old Valhalla Avenue," Jack began carefully in Krista’s place, “You know I-47 past the old box factory...?"

He soon trailed off in a nondescript conversation about directions to "his house".

"What was that,” Mina whispered loudly, “I thought you hated him."

"I do,” Krista replied harshly," but lets say I did tell her the truth, she'd call the cops and there’s no telling how many creeps there are like that jolly old man we ran in to."

"Good point,” Mary said quietly," but why are you helping him out?"

"I just want to get home, that’s all," Krista muttered bitterly crossing her arms and glaring out the window at the slightly bleeding sun.

Chapter XVI

"Thanks ma'am, I appreciate it," Jack spoke cheerily to Janet through the window. She had pulled over in front of an old service station situated beside a small diner downtown.

The girls had wandered away from the vehicle to stretch they’re legs a bit after the ride. The blood red sun had sunk lower in the sky and was about to finish the day.

"No problem," she replied," Oh by the way, the police said there's a some kind of psychopath rapist in the Piedmont, don’t tell the girls, I wouldn’t scare them but I'm just letting you know."

Jack almost let a gasp slip from his throat but caught himself. They knew, but how...That old man, he must've looked through the old case files and found out.

He would have at least given a physical description and even then, it was dark and he hadn’t been wearing anything recognizable that night...

"Did they say what he looks like?"

"No not really, “Janet replied," except that he was about 5' 6'' and had jet black hair."

Jack involuntarily ran his fingers through his hair. The old bag had at least screwed up the details, that was good.

Apparently that whack on the head had knocked him for a loop, but he still figured that his luck wouldn’t hold for long.

"Thanks for the information,” Jack said waving goodbye as he walked over to where the girls were standing bunched together on a sidewalk.

They hadn’t been paying attention much to his conversation as they were looking around at the biggest small town they’d ever seen.

Statesville was a pretty big place but in reality it was little different than other small towns in North Carolina.

Its main characteristic being its biggest structure was a Wal-Mart. As Jack jogged over to the girls Mina looked down at her feat and grimaced.

"I'm--- "Starving,” Jack finished her sentence smugly, “I’m gonna die if I don't eat soon. why do you think I asked her to pull over here," pointing to the diner as he said this.

Mina frowned and crossed herself, “Yeah but one problem, we don’t have any money hobo!"

"I know the girl that runs the place,” Jack replied,” She’s really one of the only people I can trust."

The diners entry bell gave a metallic jingle as Jack opened the door and walked in, the girls following loosely behind entering the door one by one.

A middle aged woman was wiping the counter of some spilled beverage in a constant circular motion.

Her hair was a beautiful blonde color and it was long and curled. Her face was soft and white which greatly enhanced her glowing green eyes.

She looked wonderful despite her food covered, greasy apron and white t-shirt. One could not imagine her wearing anything else, it was simple.

A complicated dress would only spoil her looks. “What can I get for you," she asked not even looking up.

Daily drudgery like this has a way of doing that sort of thing to you. "I'll have at least some of you’re attention to-go, Sammy,” Jack said smiling.

"Jack!” She shouted joyously as she all but jumped over the counter and embraced the young man warmly.

*reads happily* :D
I like Janet...but why did Jack get so nervous at what she said??!!
At least Krista is finally being nice to him now! :D

"Jack, where have you been," she asked lessening the tight hug.

"Oh around and about," he said gesturing with his head to the girls.

"Oh," she said nodding her head slowly. Jack turned around and placed a hand on the woman’s shoulder. “This is Samantha Howard,” Jack said still smiling, “She’s like a sister to me, order whatever you want and I'll take care of it."

"I don’t like the sound of that," Samantha said less cheerfully. The comment dimmed her high spirits a notch.

After brief hellos Mina, Krista and Mary scrambled onto the stools, picking up large plastic menus that were scattered over the counter to read.

Jack also took a seat, placed his hat on the counter and situated his cane against the counter, covering his frostbitten face with his hands.

"I’m sorry Sam but look, I have to get these girls home," jack began, "They were kidnapped from Ohio and I tried taking them to the police but we ran into Mcpeters, so I ruled that out. Seeing how as you're accustomed to do favors for me I’d really appreciate it if you could..."

"I’m sorry," she said as she strode back behind the counter with her head down, “I would take them up there, I really would but my car got repossessed."

Jack ran his hands through his mopped brown hair and sighed, “again?"
"I missed a payment," She replied as she opened a drawer underneath the counter and extracted a box of matches and a ciggarette, "Been doing allot of that lately."

Samantha had been going through financial problems lately.

Apparently being a lone diner waitress wasn’t a thriving business and most days she barely had enough money to buy herself pack of cigarettes.

A bright orange flash slightly brightened up the dimly lit room as she lit then end and took a puff.

Eyeing the cigarette intently Jack cleared his throat, "Um, you wouldn’t happen to have..."

"No," came Samantha’s sharp reply, “I can barely afford a pack for myself once in a while. Besides I told you already: you don’t need cigarettes!"
"Just one little--"

"No!" jack was cut off again. Jack crossed his arms and grimaced as she took another puff, "Hypocrite," he muttered under his breath.

"I'm not a hypocrite, jack. I’m 25 and you’re 16."

Chapter XVIII

Mary tugged anxiously on her plaid coat as her tingling fingers adjusted to the warmth of the room.

She had the menu placed in font of her but Marys thoughts were elsewhere. Her brain had been trying its best to catch up with the recent events that had taken place.

Everything happened so fast, one moment she had been singing at a karaoke bar and the next she was following some screwed up kid.

He seemed nice enough but still, what was he getting out of it? Why didn’t he just buy some a bus tickets or at least get the waiter to give them a ride home.

Every question was chained to a hundred more questions, this did nothing but make Mary’s brain hurt even worse than it already had been.

The aroma of coffee stimulated her tired nerves slightly and then she remembered why she had picked up the menu in the first place. Soup looked pretty good.

The night had finally conquered the lingering sun when Mary, Krista and Mina had finished they’re food.

They began to mostly talk among themselves and Jack, drinking his third cup of coffee, was talking to Samantha. “

You need to eat something jack,” Samantha said sternly as she sprayed the counter down with surface-cleaner.

"I’m fine,” came jacks dry reply, "oh almost forgot to ask, who won the election?"

without saying a word Samantha tossed a folded Charlotte Observer Newspaper on the counter and continued spraying the counters.

Taking one of the corners into his hand jack picked up the paper. It read:

GOV. BOB BLACK WINS BY A LANDSLIDE VICTORY

Article by Samuel Whitmore

Honorable lawyer and proud Catawba citizen Robert B. Black won the hearts of his voters in last Saturdays phenomenal campaign speech. After his swearing in he declared that the law enforcement officials would be replaced with his own hand picked officials.

"Men who I would trust my wife and two darling daughters with," as stated by Governor Black during the speech. His advocates have... (Continued on page 6A)

Whoopises! Sorry, me missed the lastest update! Nice job again, DC!!!

Love your new On The Run banner...very spooky! :D

Chapter XVIV

Jack looked at the paper shaking his head in disbelief, “You’ve gotta be kidding me!" Bob Black was something of a hero to the average democratic citizens of North Carolina.

To them he was a family man and a Christian visionary, but Jack knew better.

In reality he was a twisted criminal lawyer who defended gang members and drug dealers.

In fact the image of the "family man" was a complete lie, on normal days he would would rent a motel room with three hookers at a time unbeknownst to his beloved wife and "her" two children.

His relations to certain powerful figures kept the media out of his affairs.

"And that ain't the worst of it," she said lighting the end of another cigarette, “check out the bottom of that article. Jack unfolded the paper as his eyes trailed to the article beneath the one he had previously read:

PSHYCOPATH & ACCOMPLICES ON THE LOOSE

Brave Police Officer John Mcpeters
Recalls His Struggle
With The Criminals. Article by Keith McLeod

Last Tuesday night was an ordinary nightshift for police officer John Mcpeters, until he was attacked by a group of teens which included a young man and three girls. Among them was an accused....(Continued on Page A4)

Looks you made it to the front pages again, Jack," Samantha said grimly as she took her cigarette out of her mouth and dabbed it into an ash-tray.

"I heard that bit about me in the papers” Jack said rubbing his forehead with his index fingers and thumb, “But the girls? what the heck did they do?"

"I Guess since they were with you mcpeters assumed they were working for you or something."

"But still I think we need to lay low for a while,” Jack said after a long silence, “Do you know of any..."

You can stay here Jack," Samantha replied sympathetically, “I have a guest room you guys can stay in."

BTW I will be making a breif absence over the thanksgiving holidays for about a week, thank you for reading
