ON THE RUN: The Story Of Jack Jones Part II

Chapter XXI

Jack spread a large wool blanket onto the freezing cold surface of the porclein diner floor.

"yeah give them the guest room,"jack mumbled bitterly under his breath,"since when did she get a guest room?"

Jack wasnt altogether mad at the girls or the fact that they didnt want to share a room with him but he was feeling pretty cold and he had to take his annoyance out on somthing.

The girls were fairly happy when they discovered that theyde be staying the night at the diner.

It really wasnt a problem since samantha had a number of "guest rooms" due to the fact that she lived in the diner.

The Girls had been talking with her for hours and they apparently still were.

"Dagum," jack muttered with his teeth chattering,"would it kill her to put some heat on in here." Jack shuffled over to the cooking oven behind the counter, set the dial on high and opened the door.

it was a cold January night, cold even for the time of the year. Jack liked winter-time alot but it was the cold that he hated. striding back to his makeshift bed and lay his head onto the floor.

He took his hat and situated it over his face, inhaling the scent of the fabric lining inside the hat.

"God help me tommorrow," he said drearyly. after a while he suddenly stirred as if remembering something suddenly.

Sitting up Jack let his hat drop to the side and he reached into his pocket extracting a small peice of folded paper.

"Thanks again Mrs. Howard,"krista said gleeming as she pulled a purple sleeping bag up to her chest.

Samantha had given the girls each a sleeping bag which she had produced from a closet and krista(who was not in the habit of calling any person Mrs.) was thoroughly enjoying samanthas company.

As was everyone else. it took them a while but they soon got used to samanthas cheery southern accent."I told you already,"samantha said,"you can call me Sam or Samantha."

The room was quite small but Samantha had managed to crowd three cots into the room.

Samantha herself had been sitting crosslegged on the floor talking to the girls for a while. Meanwhile Mary, who hadnt said much, simply crumpled the corners her yellow sleeping bag with her hands and feeling wonderful inside.

She wasnt really used to this kind of hospitality so she really didnt know what to say. Mina was sitting up on her cot smiling and talking to samantha.

"How do you know jack,"she asked finally.

"he's really a good guy if you give him a chance,"she said sternly,"I can tell you guys dont trust him."

"who said we didnt," krista retorted.

"Jack told me everything that happened. He didnt blame you for it but i still dont understand why you guys treated him like that?"

"We were wierded out,"Krista replied indifferently,"what can I say?"

"But you didnt answer my question,"Mina said as she slid closer to samantha on her cot,"How did you guys meet?"

"Well,"samantha began thoughtfully as she searched in her mind for a nearly forgotten memory."It was a particularly cold christmas about 3 years ago..."
