It doesn't surprise me at all. Another story that comes to mind is the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmund Rostand. lol It seems kind of sexist when you think about it. I mean, whoever heard of a story about "handsome man falling in love with beastly woman"?Did you know that one of the original Beauty and the Beast stories was actually French and I do believe written around the same time.
