Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare wants YOU!
I totally agree w/ Hermione on the whole House-Elf topic. I mean - why would you treat something so terribly??!!
House-Elves didn't do anything to YOU, Malfoy!! Seriously...
They're halarious (and Kreacher in a...bad way), they're kind (minus Kreacher), they're faithful (minus Kreacher)....What do you guys think?

Write a series of Elf-improvement books. Build their elf esteem and elf reliance.

I said "Yeah. Kinda." because I think it's bad how most house elves are treated but I don't think S.P.E.W. is going to help change anything.

I think looking at how elves are portrayed in the books would be an interesting (To Harry Potter fans anyway :D ) topic. They seem to mostly be really happy helping out humans, even Dobby. He longed for freedom, but what he does with his freedom isn't a lot different from what he would be doing in a decent wizard's home. Do the elves behave like that because they're uneducated, or because it's thier nature? We have no idea what kind of intelligence they have, whether it's programmed magically into them to want to work for wizards all the time and expect a pittance or nothing in return, or whether it's just some concept that has been ingrained in thier minds all these years. I hope if the elves would want to be set free, that Hogwarts wouldn't keep them. It's something to think about.

On a side note, JKR has once mentioned that Flitwick is part elf. I guess he is also part human. So can Human's marry elves and have an equal partnership? If so, that would certainly make the correctness of S.P.E.W.'s aims very easy to decide about.

LOL

I said Yeah, kinda.

I think it is a neat idea, and the house-elves really are kind of pathetic...they don't really have any rights... but I think Hermione went overboard with everything, trying to make a movement and everything. After all, the elves like their work, and they didn't want to have breaks or wages, they just didn't. I would be all for it if I knew the house-elves really wanted it in the first place.

I've finished mine, but I don't know if I want to add anything else... lol

Section 3: Treatment in Wizarding Homes

For centuries house-elves have been treated with the lowest respect and kindness possible. If elves had their say, they could get the respect they deserved. Here is what I believe house-elves have the right to in the homes they work in.
• House-elves should be treated in the same equality as one human being to another.
• Masters should respect house-elves as their employees, not servants or slaves.
• House-elves should not be subjected to physical harm by their masters, nor should they be required to harm themselves for disobeying a command.
• House-elves should not be required to perform tasks or commands that compromise their integrity or pride in any way, shape, or form.
• House-elves should be allowed the right to their own property and space (i.e. A bedroom, if one wishes for it, and clothes, without being dismissed)
• Masters should not be able to forbid house-elves to tell various bits of information; if they do not wish anyone to know, they should not let their house-elf hear it in the first place.

Ha ha.... Sorry I just thought that was funny...

I'm afraid I don't really have an opinion on this topic. I haven't really thought about it much.. hmmm....

I'm afraid I don't agree with Hermione. I know she's looking out for the house elves and all, but the point is THEY LIKE WORKING and they DON'T WANT TO BE FREED. I think that's made quite obvious in the books.

House elves were made so they could help wizards. BUT THEY HAVE MAGIC. We should have the elves to help us. The wizards can make a rag clean their kitchen, bathroom, dishes. ANything. We have to do it ourselves. They have pens that write what they say. We have to do it ourselves.
What use do they have for house elves? We have more use for them than them.

So SPEW  is good for wizards. But if it was humans...it would be a different story

I know, Princey, but still...It doesn't matter - just because they're not human...would you treat a dog that way? No. Would you treat a monkey that way? No.
It's not just about making them do chores and punish themselves cruelly - it's about rights. Just because they aren't human doesn't mean they have to get pushed around (and just because they aren't real doesn't mean they have to get pushed around, too).
