Self-Defence??

The good thing is, with the group that does kick-boxing with us, there a man who is really good and actually is a better teacher than the Black Belt that is the main teacher (I do not mean the professor for my class, this black belt must be a higher ranked black belt than my prof). While the main instuctors were working with the new people, those of us who had experience worked with this man an he really help fix some bad habbits that I picked up from working with the other instructors who really do not have the time to give individual attention to people.

But the black belts are in Ju Jitsu I would guess? I've never heard of a kickboxing club that gives out belts. So a higher ranking Ju-Jitsu instructor wouldn't necessarily be a better kickboxer then a lower rank one.

Well, they are in various forms of Karate, I think that the one who leads the kick-boxing class either has a higher pay scale than my prof. or he has a higher belt degree in one of the other forms of Karate. Like I said, it is a kind of piece-meal class.

Okey... So how's it like? Do you get belts and stuff? ... If you have several trainers, I would guess this to be more of a self-defence class then the real martial arts where you stick to one goal (one sport). It would be quite difficult to evolve in Tae-Kwondo for instance if I was taught both Tae-Kwondo kicks one day and kickboxing kicks the other day ;)

I took seven years of Kenpo karate so, I'm good :D

hehe. Kenpo Karate is awesome. Did you learn the "snap and twig" move when you went there? One of the coolest methods I've seen, although I guess you'd have to be a GOOD student to make it effective.

I am supposed to test for my yellow belt soon.

Cool ;) Wish you good luck with that. How many months do you need before you can get a new belt?

EDIT: I have a few more things to say.

For the girls and boys who wants to learn REAL self-defence that works and functions JUST like you want it to, I would recommend serving in the military for a year or two.

The US military has a very good training program for self-defence with or without weapons (A guy from the US navy trained me two times in knife fights). They know their stuff because they've seen the real deal, and they know what works. a houndred years of experience has tightened their techniques.

The Israelis are known to have the best martial arts in the world (Krav Maga). Very focused on gun confrontations (taking a gun from your enemy in a direct confrontation, etc).

The best self-defence however, is teached by the Russians. When I was up North to visit my grand-parents for a long time, I met up with a guy and his gym who was a former Spetsnaz (One of the most known Russian elite groups). Even though I didn't train with him, I got to see some Spetsnaz techniques and he showed me some news-papers and clips on the internet about Spetsnaz combat ... Those are the guys I would be most afraid to meet in a combat. Ever.

To sum it up; best self-defence is learned in the military ;)

I have some friends who did Krav Maga.

Yeah I've never tried Krav Maga, nor have I talked to anyone who's a student of it, but Krav Maga is a simple self-defence, not focused on cool tricks and stunts, but on things that works properly. It doesn't even look good at all. It looks like it sucks, basicly, but it works ;) ... So therefor, the Israeli uses it. I also think it was invented by the Israeli military (I'm not completely sure about that).

I think Copperfox would be good to have in a discussion about the navy's self-defence system. I've seen it myself that the US military is very well trained in self-defence, both with weapons and without. I've seen a navy using a pencil for a good defencive device.

I participated in a self defence class with a instructor who taught Krav Maga. I do not remember half of it though.
