Who has seen the show (Firefly) or the movie (Serenity, based off of Firefly)? What did you think of either? I hadn't even seen the show until this last weekend, when I just went ahead and saw all 14 episodes back-to-back-to-back, etc. wow, what a weekend. lol. Then I saw the movie today. Pretty good, although I have a few reserves about both.

There's a lot of immoral things about certain characters (mainly Inara) that really bug me. Thankfully, this was not delved into during the movie though it is abundant in the show. And there was one main part about the movie that really disappointed me (though it could be considered a major spoiler so I won't mention it without spoiler space, and even then I'll wait a while).

Otherwise, I think the show (and the movie to some extent) had some very clever dialogue. I like that the focus is on bandits in sort of a wild west type fashion as apposed to "traditional" space movies/shows.

Anyway, thoughts?

yeah, i'ave heard good things about both. I want to watch them. Though i'm trying to catch up in lost right now, so good luck with that, lol.

The movie was great. :) It reminded me of live action cowboy bebop.
Get lost in Serenity Timmy. :p

btw Hi :)

(A tiny spoiler.)

I thought is was a good movie. Its in my top five of science movies. Though I walked out disturbed by a few things. The scene with River standing over all those dead Reavers (sp?) is edged in my mind a long time. *shivers*

I'm trying to work to get the first series of Firefly. Well the only series at that... Fox didn't know what they were doing buying the rights to the show, if the Sci-fi network was the one producing to it, it might have had a longer run.

I'll be seeing Serenity tonight hopefully. I've heard great things about it, so I can hardly wait! :D

Serenity/Firefly

I've got the series brought it at a HMV store for a steal of £17.99 and thought that it had brilliant scripts and characterisations in some ways better than Farscape. Though not as escapist as Farscape is as it portrays sci-fi and space travel in a very different way and there are no space aliens.

It has a very cool wild west in space flavour especially combined with the down to Earth music and banjo, guitar and violin instruments; "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand....I don't care I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me..."

My favourite episodes include 'The Train Job', 'Shindig', 'Safe', 'Our Mrs Reynolds', Jaynestown' (Love 'The Man they call Jayne' song), 'Ariel', 'War Stories', 'Trash' and 'The Message' I haven't seen the 'Serenity' movie yet but I hope it gets picked up for another series.

yeah my mate bought the series on dvd so i borrowed it off him, its really good. river sorta annoyed me but hey you get that. i havent seen the movie yet but plan to. :)

yeah i also want to see another season of it. i think hteyd be stupid not to, after the sucess of the film. 'Our Mrs Reynolds' i liked that episode heaps.

lol, you just listed 3/4s of the episodes as your favorites. My personal favorite is definitely "Ariel."

I've seen Serenity, and watched all but the last 3 episodes of Firefly, and I thought they were good. I didn't like Inara being a space prostitute or w/e she was, but I liked the show. It seemed much more original that most of the stuff on T.V. now. I don't think I'll watch a sequel if they make it considering what they did to my two fav. charecters, but I dunno. I loved how they portrayed River and Simon's relationship.

INARA IS NOT A PROSTITUTE she is a COMPANION and she could be MUCH MORE APTLY COMPARED to the Geishas of Dynastic Japan. She doesn't just have sex with anyone, she carefully chooses her companions, is highly trained in mental and physical abilities and the like. She's not just a 'prostitute'. It takes years of dedicated effort before one can be licensed as a companion.

Obviously I like her character. I REALLY like Jayne though, and Jaynestown is my favorite episode.

Firefly is a fantastic show, and I wish the movie - Serenity - would have done better.

I loved Jaynestown, that is one of the coolest episodes of any show I have seen. The facial expressions were absolutely priceless. Jayne is such a great charecter. I do like Inara, I just don't like her as a companion. If that makes sense. I agree, a geisha is more of what she is like, but I still don't like the fact people are hiring her for sex.

So, I couldn't resist putting them up here
http://www.chosentwo.com/firefly/extras/heroofcanton.php - where i got the lyrics from

Jayne
The man they call Jayne
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne
Now Jayne saw the Mudders' backs breaking
He saw the Mudders lament
And he saw the magistrate taking
Every dollar and leaving five cents
So he said, "You can't do that to my people"
He said "You can't crush 'em under your heel"
Jayne strapped on his hat
And in five seconds flat
Stole everything Boss Higgins had to steal
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne
Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit the sky
He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
And the man call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And headed out for the stars
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!

I love Fireflys!! I have only seen 5 episodes! which really stinks my friend and I were going to watch more but my dad came and picked me up it so awesome!! Of course me and my friend like to mock shows and stuff so we were mocking it...but we loved it!!!I thought Jayne was such and arrogant jerk...but he was so funny at the same time!! I loved him!!(whoo check out those musels!)....

in the movie, do you think that whedon on purpose set it up so that it would have been easy to make a 2nd series, and with the sucess of the film do you think that there will be a second series, if so i really hope they do.
btw
did anyone else just completely love river in the move, in the series she kinda annoyed me with all the 'im weird' stuff, but i loved how in the movie she became more a member of the crew. this is why i think they should definetly make a 2nd season, to build on the strengths of the film. :)

I read somewhere in an interview w/ Gina Torres that she had signed up to do another movie if Serenity was sucessfull, so my guess is they are going to do another movie. I think a sequel would prabably be what Joss would do if he decided to continue it then another T.V. show. I wouldn't complain either way though.

oooohh, didnt think of that. another movie would be great, but still i wouldnt complain at all if they made another season :)

Dang, I can't believe i didn't post in here before. I bought the movie and the series and love em. In fact, I just let my friend borrow the series and he stayed up till 5 am watching the series that night and went to work then that morning at starbucks. we just love it. I really wish they would have been allowed to keep going, because it feels like the end of the series is kind of rash and not a good lead up to the movie, but i understand thats because it was cut. But i wonder at the fanbase it has now if they would ever be able to work on the series again. THen again, you wouldn't have the same issues to deal with and they would have to bring in new characters on the ship to make up for such things.
