Sonnets Here, In-House

AWWWWWW...do I feel honored by you Joe or what??? This was very sweet and nice of you to do :D I'm very honored to have you as my very good friend!!

Btw...I liked the other ones you made too ;)

Bad Joe to write so many sonnets about me :p

No..this isn't going to work because Joe knows I don't mean this and I can't be mean to you! Even if I would try you would still like it :D

Well, I would enjoy you being JOKINGLY mean to me. That's like the ongoing game I have with my spiritual granddaughter Amanda: when she has some kind of challenge coming up, I "threaten" her that if she doesn't do well, I'll "punish" her by being affectionate and supportive. But in your case it would be adult to adult rather than adult to child.

These are all written so well and are all so sweet! I love the one about Tiff. Everything you said fits her to the "T" (which her name being Tiff is rather fitting for that comment. :rolleyes: ahahaha). I must say I'm especially liking this thread because I get to know about some people I don't know so well through eyes that love those people, and I feel like I can get to know them and love them in that way as well. This is brilliant, CF. Please continue when you can. ^_^

I second both ideas, Lady Callandra! I'm enjoying getting to know folks through the eyes of one who knows them better than I.

For Gentle Voice

Niece Hannah, as she's known to Copperfox,
Has risen far in learning Tae Kwon Do;
But though her discipline is firm as rocks,
She'd rather not call anyone a foe.

Her strength and force of will don't contradict
Her wish for love, or kindness to her friends;
It pleases me that I'm the one she picked
To be her Uncle, even in pretense.

She's been my sidekick, if a pun's allowed;
In sparring times of prayer, she intercedes
With me for forum buddies, and I doubt
She'll ever cease to care about such needs.

Yes, Hannah, what I say is truly felt:
In Christian growth, you're headed for black belt.

I love the slight humor in that one, CF. I'm rather partial to puns myself, so that one is one of my favorites, and I know that GS is going to be as honored by that one as all others who have had the pleasure to be subject of your sonnets. ^_^

L-C, your time is coming; but I need to get more of a handle on your distinct personality before I try processing it into fourteen lines of iambic pentameter. Meanwhile, I'll take aim at one of my earliest friends on this forum....

To Lucy The Marshwiggle

Within my first year on The Dancing Lawn,
While I still had my darling Janalee,
The subject of church dance was touched upon,
And Lucy the Marshwiggle wrote to me.

Her alias was humorous, and all
I knew besides was that she sought the gift
Both to serve God, and love the arts; her call
In this was not unlike that of our Tiff.

I liked her for her mind--unlike some guys,
I really mean that!--and a year, at least,
Would pass before I saw the bonus prize:
Her stunning beauty, treasure of the East.

So, Lucy, if this won't stir too much pride,
I'll say you're GORGEOUS--inside and outside!

Don't worry about it, dearie. ^_^ I'm just loving seeing members of my second family being honored in poetry. And Lu is definately gorgeous inside and out. I remember when she put up her very first pic on TDL. She stunned everyone with how pretty she is. I remember her telling me that people wanted to use her as an actress on a commercial, but she couldn't because of her parents, or something close to that anyway.

My sonnet for Lucy-M contains a mention of one who for me was MORE beautiful than Lucy; this in turn reminds me of a previous bit of work. When Inkling was actively composing HER sonnets on "Character," I did a guest shot there, reflecting my mental state as I was reading her verses while my loss of Janalee was fresher in pain. So I'll reprint it here in my own collection. (Jan is entitled to be considered retroactively a TDL member, because for a short but meaningful time she was able to be a spiritual encouragement to my dear young Umbrella.)

I really ought to be in bed by now,
But bed means less without my Janalee.
Eventually I'll get to sleep somehow,
Albeit helped there artificially.

The vertigo, at least, is in retreat--
Almost two days with no new dizzy spell.
I must forbid myself to overeat:
One more excuse to bide on T-D-L .

Would you believe I still don't have quite all
The papers in on my extended tax?
Distractions caused by Jan's last homeward call
Are why I'm so unusually lax.

No perfect volta here; I'd be contrite,
But how much can you ask for, late at night?

One for Lucy!!! YES!!!

I had the privilege of meeting her personally and talk to her. It is really, really hard to decide which was best, her inner or her outer beauty!! I couldn't, so I settled for both equally beautiful!! Nice CF. I will let her know.

My "guest sonnet" relating to the aftermath of bereavement was followed less than 24 hours later by one that was in part about the beautiful and witty Inkling....

It comes to mind that, far as I have heard,
The husband of our lovely female bard
Has never given us an online word;
Perhaps he simply has to work too hard.

Or maybe he just feels no interest
In Narnia; God help us, though, if we
Should make so small a thing the litmus test
Of Inkling's marital felicity.

My Janalee and I shared love and God,
But many things I like were not her style.
Yet, as a couple, we were not so odd,
For it was joy to me to make her smile.

She smiles now Further Up and Further In,
And Inkling has an inkling of that grin.

It warmed my pancreas, which is my inside joke with Amanda, when for the first time since Amanda adopted me as her grandfather, someone on-forum ASKED to become one of my listed virtual relatives. (I don't count EveningStar because he didn't even HAVE TO ask; he just automatically WAS my brother.) So here's a sonnet to my latest forum-family member.

For Miss.Sunflower

Sunflower is the latest niece I've gained;
She likes the Eighties; she's a Retro fan.
She also gets behind the Vatican,
And, if I'm not mistaken, loves to paint.

Her given name is Maggie, says her sig;
She's also known to some as Magsie-chan.
She knows about the comics of Japan,
But more importantly, her heart is big.

Around the time of her homecoming dance,
She asked if she could come into my tribe.
I was so touched, I didn't need a bribe;
So sweet a girl deserves to have a chance.

Now, Maggie, as my new adopted niece,
I hope you'll show your next artistic piece.

Third Sonnet for MGG-Took

An abscess in a foot is not the thing
I would have chosen first, or even tenth,
As reason for new verses honoring
Vanessa; but I really would lament

Her needlessly experiencing loss
Of motion, when so many count on her,
And maybe being yelled at by her
baas
For failure to keep skating, as it were.

Though honesty is lonely, as she said,
It's better than a lie, and she should know
(In childhood, lies once tried to fill her head);
The TRUTH is, to the doctor she must go!

A lady worthy of her spotless name
Deserves a better fate than going lame.
