Sonnets Here, In-House

Here is a case of my making the effort to "research" a member to make a sonnet possible. MrsMcGinty, when you see this, don't think I'm seriously asking you to give me personal information about yourself; the questions are merely part of the poem.

To MrsMcGinty --
just because I haven't written
a sonnet for her up to now

I gather that you are another Beck,
Not Becca Mickah; you have logged more time.
I saw the prayers for Casey Overpeck
Too late to pray myself; I hope she's fine.

A Residence Advisor now is she!
It brings to mind the mother of my Dad:
Once, at Chicago University,
She was an R.A. too, with her own pad.

So what is it you learn--I mean, aside
From loving Celtic Thunder? Will your art
Become your job? Is it your plan to ride
Artistic trails from this, your student start?

I saw the shoes with green and orange toes;
But where you'll go from there, nobody knows.

~ ~ For Glenburne:

Your profile shows us that your date of birth
Falls near the date on which, in Sixty-Three,
Great C.S. Lewis bade farewell to Earth,
And someone murdered John F. Kennedy.

As one who, like myself, is highly fond
Of history, I'm sure that you knew this.
Your knowledge roams in Scotland, and beyond,
For it's not true that ignorance is bliss.

You didn't leave us ignorant that you
Are male; when saying they would "set you up,"
Don't make it "with a person;" say what's true--
Say "with a female!" Drop generic stuff!

We need to specify realities,
Or else I'll shoot at you with squirty cheese!

To Lioness Aslan:

I seek to give wide coverage in verse
By sonnetizing people I don't know.
In choosing subjects, I could do much worse
Than someone who likes books on audio.

That's you, L. Aslan, born in Ninety-Three,
When my first wife had joined me in Japan.
That's not the only touching thing for me;
For when you speak of penguins in your plan,

You're naming the appealing type of bird
Which is my symbol for my second wife.
(Both wives are now in Heaven, while a third
Has not shown up yet in my Earthly life.)

If this, your sonnet, can bring you a smile,
You might find all the other ones worthwhile.

To Aravis_Yanes:

Muchacha muy bonita, when you came
To Dancing Lawn, you brought bilingual fun.
I got to know you through that roleplay game
Which gave my Alipang a starting gun.

The liar named Zelaya made a mess
There in Honduras, forcing you to turn
Your thoughts to your own people's happiness.
A happy ending settled that concern;

But coming back to Dancing Lawn, it seems
That someone has accused you of some wrong.
I'm not sure what has brought you close to screams,
But may God grant that conflict won't last long.

You've played a Gryphon, Suri! Try to fly
Above dislike, and brighten up our sky.

Copperfox, I just wanted to ask, seeing as you've so much experience with sonnets, what is the meter pattern of sonnets? Do different types of sonnets have different rules?

Thanks in advance for the help!

blessed are the peacemakers...

blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called sons of God...

Since DANI has also returned to TDL....

With hemispheres and timezones opposite,
I can't exactly walk across the hall,
Knock on your door and ask you, "How is it
With you today?"--nor can my cellphone call

To Indonesia. Thus, when we heard news
Of earthquakes and typhoons in your far land,
We prayed and waited. We would hate to lose
A dear and lovely member of our band!

The silent months were long; we were concerned,
Though busy with new people signing on.
Since now we have the joy that you've returned,
We'll share what happened here while you were gone.

And late-arriving fans of Narnia
Will get to meet our Danny Darnia.

:o thank you.... also for your concerned in the disasters in my country.
Actually, my country sounds like Japan with the earthquakes in every month :p

I finally got a chance to catch up on reading your Sonnets and I have to say that they are all very nicely writen.
I believe you've done a brilliant job with each and every single one of them.

Ha ha! You're next, young lady!! And I warn you: this one will be sillier than most.

With Wild Rose looking through my sonnet thread,
Assuring me my readership's not dead,
Eccentric rhyming pops into my head.
I'm glad you didn't say my sonnets stink;
That would be painful coming from Katink;
Still, you should always tell us what you think.

In what you said about beholding flaws,
I couldn't see enough to judge your cause
For dwelling on it; this will have to pause.
With deepening acquaintance, you and I
Might learn what makes each other fight or fly;
As long as no one's harmed, it's worth a try.

You're sonnetized, young lady; don't be vexed!
Just read my Emmett-Queenie story next.

A combination of mystical influences now comes upon me: the enjoyment of being unconventional...the fact that it's been a long time since I wrote a tribute to the brilliant woman who explained to me about the "volta" in sonnets...and the realization that her username has SEVEN lines. :D Now, therefore, I offer her a tribute in the form of my first-ever ACROSTIC sonnet!!

I always tell young members that real life,

N ot fantasy, comes first; and since I do

K now that the lovely Juliet's a wife,

L ife's duties, in her case, cannot be few.

I n recent weeks, she hasn't been here much--

N obody else's business, I concede.

G od willing, all her time spent out of touch

I nvolved the meeting of some valid need.

N ow that we've caught new sight of our Fantine,

K inship is felt again across the Lawn;

L et members who are new upon the scene

I nhale her presence while she's here, not gone.

N ow, if you think this is too strange a sonnet,

G o somewhere else--no need to dwell upon it.
