Spacebullies Two: The Search For More Parody

Without Sha-Na-Na to intercept anti-aircraft missiles, The Javelin dared not stay close to Izdihar's men. But before he made his escape, he used a grenade launcher to launch a specialized grenade. It burst twenty feet above some of the terrorist vehicles, spraying them with a liquid which had a low level of radioctivity. But high enough to be traceable. Surveillance satellites ought to pick up the radiation signature.

A tree-skimming line of flight got Richard into the clear. He had done what he could. He wished the soldiers luck. They would be bringing a weapon gifted to them by the United States: an electromagnetic railgun, whose near-lightspeed projectiles should have some effect even on Red Slaughter.

The Javelin also wished for Sha-Na-Na to regain his backbone.

At Area 42 in Nevada, Conn Johnstantine sensed that something had gone wrong with the good guys in West Africa. He and Katuva the Sky Lioness had been making sure that the curse cast upon American military training systems was undone. Hamhanda Blubber was totally blank on any memory of what she had been doing since being returned to Earth by Screendoormammu. Colonel Flakjacket was able to confirm that the propaganda saying everything about the United States was purely evil was not something Miss Blubber would normally produce; she always at least pretended to be a patriot.

Suddenly, Conn tensed up, then declared, "Sha-Na-Na is in trouble! Katuva, are you recharged for migration back to Africa?"

The Lioness looked distraught. "Not for at least another four hours."

"Then I'll do the job. You are badly needed back there."

Kimchee Man told them, "The rest of us can mop up the situation here. Go for it."

Conn grasped Katuva's hands. "Teleportation isn't my big talent. I can do it, but I'll be weak for a while after we arrive. It'll be all your show for awhile before I regain strength."

"Me, without Captain Sha-Na-Na?"

"My sense of the situation is that Sha-Na-Na will be useless to us until whatever hit him is reversed."

"Very well, we need to get over there. I told you about a bungalow I own in Nigeria. Your best bet is probably to think of that place as you conjure your teleportation spell. From there, I can try to call the Brickhawks-- the ones in best condition."

Two of the Brickhawks had emerged unwounded from the major battle a few days ago: the leader Maureen Hawk's-Cry and the heavy-equipment specialist Brad Sarfaraz. Hearing from The Javelin, they borrowed a helicopter from their game-warden friends, and headed for the Nigerian border. But even with a long-endurance helo that would not soon require more fuel, it would take most of a day to reach the area of most recent action. They notified The Javelin accordingly, hoping he would be able to pass the word to other heroes. But a signal failure prevented Javelin from describing Sha-Na-Na's disgrace.

When they were within forty-five minutes of needing to make their first fuel stop, the two Brickhawks got a surprise. Captain Sha-Na-Na appeared near them in the air, as he had come alongside one of the Brickhawk helicopters before the recent big fight. Now, instead of coming aboard, Sha-Na-Na gestured an offer to CARRY them onward. There was an advantage in this, and Maureen indicated agreement. This brought them over the Nigerian border in relatively short order.

Half an hour beyond this, they received a radio call from Sky Lioness. She and Conn Johnstantine had landed, some thirty miles east of where the two Brickhawks and Sha-Na-Na were at the moment. When informed that Sha-Na-Na was with the other two, Katuva asked how he was. The two Brickhawks knew nothing about the tampering with the superhero; and The Javelin was not in communications at the moment to report on Sha-Na-Na's unexpected cowardice.

As for Willy "Sha-Na-Na" Bastion: like a child in denial, he was trying to convince himself that his panic was someone else's fault, anyone else's fault. Maybe if he was lucky, he would have a way to be useful without having to face Red Slaughter again. The evil implant in his brain kept him from remembering that he might have beaten Red Slaughter if not for the bad luck of being changed into his boy-form.

What happened soon afterward was anticlimactic. The Winter Trooper, The Kestrel, and Green Dart all arrived in Nigeria, joined up with Sky Lioness and the converging soldiers, and soon caught up with both Red Slaughter and Izdihar. Sky Lioness and Winter Trooper together were able to subdue the monster after two railgun hits weakened him. Sha-Na-Na decided he was more useful helping Green Dart, Kestrel, the Brickhawks, and the rest of the soldiers to round up the rank-and-file terrorists.

When Conn Johnstantine regained his vigor, he cast a spell to detect any evil MAGIC interfering with Sha-Na-Na's powers or personality. He found nothing, because he wasn't searching for technological interference.

Not much time passed before Sky Lioness had the chance to use her healing power on the Brickhawks and game wardens who were hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Because the captured wounded poachers were not in any danger of dying, she left them to recover normally. The rest of her healing energy for the present went to other persons in hospital: eight victims of life-threatening diseases, and a farm woman whose right thumb had been severed and destroyed in an accident. With a fierce effort, Sky Lioness made a new thumb grow on the maimed hand. Then she had to rest.

Meanwhile, Richard "Javelin" Berhanu joined the Nigerian soldiers in examining the aircraft chop-shop the terrorists had set up. Izdihar'smen had worked with admirable speed: all six of the Brickhawks' four-seater helos had been completely disassembled, and --clearly with expert supervision-- parts from them had been incorporated into eighteen older helos. The heavy-lift helicopter normally flown by Warren Trinh and Bradley Sarfaraz had been left intact; evidently, the terrorists had planned to use it exactly as it was. As sooon as Warren arrived at the site, he began his own evaluation of the "Frankenstein" helicopters, to decide one by one whether each hybrid was good enough to use as it was now.

Maureen decided that the Brickhawks ought to get airborne right away in their one original-condition helo, the big one. She sat as co-pilot to Brad. Lashimba Sweetwater and Pamela Lovejoy would man the door guns. As a newly declared honorary Brickhawk, The Javelin accepted Maureen's invitation to ride along on this impromptu patrol.

But not before he told Sky Lioness, Kestrel and Winter Trooper about Sha-Na-Na's aberrant behavior.

When Willy Bastion was questioned about this, he threw a tantrum. "You're being mean! You're picking on me! I'm not a fraidy-cat, I'm not I'm not I'm not! You're all just jealous 'cause YOU can't shoot lightning!"

The Kestrel resorted to a bit of acting. Looking past Willy, he took several steps in the direction he was looking, then stiffened. Glancing at Winter Trooper-- and winking-- he hissed, "Backy! Do you see what I see?"

Winter Trooper came up alongside his friend, then abruptly cried out, "It's Red Slaughter! He's back!"

Not even pausing to look behind him, Willy sprang up and ran in the opposite direction, screaming, "I want my Mommy!"

Winter Trooper looked at Kestrel. "Conn already established that magic didn't do this to Sha-Na-Na. Maybe he was injected with some psychotropic drug. Might have been delivered by a dart rifle."

Kestrel frowned. "And such a rifle could easily have been stolen from the game wardens."

~ ANOTHER NECESSARY SUMMARY ~

My version of The Mandalorian leaves Yoga-Rug's home planet of Toofah-Roof, bound for the Earth-variant where China rejected Communism, and where I have placed Sailor Moon-type characters. Gross-Goo telepathically encourages Dim Jargon to seek happiness. In the Beijing of the anti-Communist Earth, Dim is introduced to Ying Tien-Hai, the beautiful daughter of a famous kung-fu master. She proves to be blind, and the Banjolorian instantly realizes what would be the advantages of a marriage to her. Toofah-Roff is not left unprotected even when Yoga-Rug leaves. A non-human female Jedi-counterpart named Zubdookree assumes duty there, and is later joined by Moose Windchime, who has the beautiful ex-pirate Melodica hovering adoringly around him.

On Seedubb Earth, Groan Starr and Princess Vixen accompany Batfellow and other heroes to visit the hospitalized Doctor Unusual. A police sergeant named Chip Thursday makes their acquaintance. To exercise his Fuss powers, Groan goes with Cyberdork to hunt for Opposite Whoosh, but without success. Opposite Whoosh, evading detection, picks up some fellow bad guys in Mexico, and heads for the suburbs of Urbanopolis, where they meet up with my versions of Scarecrow and Captain Boomerang, plus two Face Twisters.

Batfellow tells Bot Index that he regards her as a living person. Doctor Unusual fiddles with time in order to hasten his recuperation. Meanwhile, Batfellow's wife and daughter continue working with Maskoflage, the Face Twister who turned to the side of good.

On Planet Greedy Crime, Baron Meedi Ogre Snarkonnen confers with his henchmen Dizwarn and Zingdash. Sending Admiral Blender and Quarkie to inflltrate Srirachiss is canceled because of the likelihood of them getting exposed for what they are. But someone else visiting my Dune equivalent is welcome: Count Havabeer, my equivalent of the villain Hasimir Fenring in the Dune books, is reconsidering his allegiance, and is receptive when Muddy-Drip Ashtrayides returns from eternity to enlist the Count in the cause of good.

Ronald of Goliad, my parody of Stephen King's gunslinger-knight in the "Dark Tower" series, has big adventures on Planet Punksteema. On the planet's southern continent, he heroically defeats a pack of werewolf-like monsters. Friendly immortals reward him for his gallantry by transporting him where he needs to go next, and they give him a special blessing: whenever he speaks the truth, EVERYONE who hears him wiil believe him. The gift helps him to unmask treason against the Thane of Malgriff in the land of Balumica. But his overall mission is to cultivate new gunslinger-knights. Ronald is unaware of a new threat approaching his world: my version of Cthulhu has directed Dark Headgear toward Punksteema. The same eldritch demon has also sent Zoot Booter's gang (of which Melodica used to be a member) to invade the story-reality based on Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers."

On "Terra," Kimchee Man and other heroes discover that Hamhanda Blubber, under Screendoormammu's influence, has facilitated a malicious falsification of American history on this Earth-variant. Conn Johnstantine and Sky Lioness perform an exorcism. Later, they teleport back to Africa to help the heroes there.

Reflecting the recent real-world sabotaging of "Masters of the Universe," I imagine that my version of Skeletor is himself secretly cooperating with the saboteurs of "Planet Alwaysurnia."

In the Babylon Five-equivalent zone, I reach back to the Season Two finale from the original show. In the series, Lieutenant Keffer simply got killed by the Shadows. But in my version, my version of Keffer was taken alive, to be made one of the living computers used in the evil alien ships. Surviving the Shadything War, he learns how my version of Delenn once wanted to exterminate all humans --which, of course, drops a wet blanket of hypocrisy over her scolding OTHER people for "intolerance." Still in control of the last Shadything warship, he plans to discredit and punish her.

On "Urth," Superdude and other good guys try to help Atomic Scalp in his efforts to be more human. With many of this Earth's nations trying to build spacecraft on the pattern provided by Adam and Proxima Straightup, Atomic Scalp goes to Nepal to lend what assistance he can to the efforts there, and is gratified to find the Nepalese people actually liking him (as people in Urth's Iowa already do).

In my version of Asgard, my version of Odin is having bad dreams. Because we all know that the whole "Hela" plot in "Thor: Ragnarok" was devised to pander to man-hating ultra-feminists, I refuse to let it be a reality in my story. Instead, I say that evil powers are trying to make Garryowen (Odin) BELIEVE that there is a Hela like in the revisonist movie. Mighty Thorpe and his Warriors Four (including my version of Sif) begin seeking an explanation for these nightmares, and soon come in contact with Yoga-Rug, Mopey-One Kanoll, and my version of Poe Dameron.

The Green Flashight Corps is about to launch still another plot arc, as many Green Flashlights have gone missing. One of these is not "really" missing: Lucy Luminous has been aiding my version of the cast of characters from "Space: 1999." To reduce readers' confusion, Marysuefire pops up and rescues all of the Flashlights who are in trouble, just like that. As for Lucy Luminous, she guides the people of "Moonbase Alpo" to a star system where, with her help, they can park their Moon in orbit around a liveable world and STAY there, starting a viable settlement on the planet. There is, however, a complication. My version of The Watcher warns the humans that my version of Galactus "just might" come their way someday.

My version of Jedi Master Plo Koon visits Planet Spacebull, to offer cooperation with the new administration there, and hears about how the Spacebullions have contacted Planet Srirachiss.

In Africa, Winter Trooper and The Kestrel help to defeat the terrorists who were cooperating with Lady Blast and Red Slaughter. The Javelin informs the others of how an unknown influence caused Captain Sha-Na-Na to turn cowardly.

Resume rapid-fire scene changes

On a relatively quiet and ordinary Earth, no major-league super-villains existed, and only one for-sure superhero: John Stewmeat, an African-American Green Flashlight and war veteran. Because of the relatively safe condition of this Earth, John spent a great deal of time looking after the nineteen other inhabited planets (all with non-human inhabitants) which came under his jurisdiction. When he was on Earth, he lived in Magnet City, New Jersey, where he was friends with a successful policeman, Detective Captain Trace Dickey.

Descending to Earth from a long duty tour, John decided to check in with his friend. Trace rarely smiled, but today he looked positively glum.

"What's the matter, Trace? did Mrs. Dickey run up a deep credit-card debt?"

"I wish it were that trivial. Mayor Tripleface pushed a piece of +\=&@=$#!! through the city council three weeks ago. Here, let me show you. Come with me to the downtown Crawl-Mart."

John was just as glad to ride in an automobile, after covering seventy-seven light-years in three hours, homeward bound from his last planet of call.

"When you see what's happening," muttered the famous detective, "don't react in haste."

As they went, John saw that nearly half of all stores along the way were boarded up, marked as permanently closed. Then Crawl-Mart came in sight. Hundreds of people were pushing their way into one set of doors, while others were streaming out of the other set. All of those departing the store were carrying unbagged merchandise, including clothing, shoes, toys, dishes, small items of furniture, and electronic devices. And everyone in either group wore the smirking facial expression of a thief who anticipates going unpunished.

John's manly jaw sagged. "Trace.... please tell me that this isn't what I think it is."

"I never lie," replied the older hero. "This is Mike Tripleface's Economic Justice Ordinance. In the televised speeches he gave to promote it, he scarcely uttered one sentence which didn't contain the phrases 'evil business corporations,' 'greedy fat cats,' or 'fair and equal distribution.' What's being distributed the most is bankruptcy for Magnet City"s retailers."

John drew a long breath. "But the Mayor has his own private supply chain for things HE needs, right?"

"Of course he does. You know, some are more equal than others."

"I have an idea." He explained his plan, and had Trace look up some needed information.

Moments later, the whole swarm of thieves beheld Green Flashlight, who was known to them, hovering in the air.

"Oppressed people of Magnet City! You have barely begun to shake off your chains! The consumer goods now distributed among you are cheap stuff! You deserve to have the best, because you FEEL that you deserve the best, and feelings are everything! While you settle for less, MIKE TRIPLEFACE, who accepted campaign donations from EVIL BUSINESS CORPORATIONS, has the best of everything that should belong to you!" John added the names of those aldermen who had voted for the Economic Justice Ordinance, and went on: "They have the most expensive wardrobes, the newest smartphones, the best gourmet foods, the most popular toys for their children! Will you stand for this injustice?"

"NO!!!" roared the greed-intoxicated mob.

"Then follow me, and I'll ensure equal distribution WITHOUT bloodshed! Remember that part; I will not permit you to harm anyone, and you know I can stop you if you disregard me. Do as I say, and the distribution will follow!"

John led the mob to the gates of Mayor Tripleface's mansion, There, he created a super-megaphone out of green light, and shouted for the Mayor to hear: "Mike Tripleface! By your own decree, redistribution is required! I'm holding back the citizens who demand justice, but I won't hold them back for long. Hand it all over, including your limousines and the entire contents of your wine cellar! Conform to the justice you advocated!"

While this was happening, police officers and firefighters were salvaging as much as could be salvaged of loot which had been discarded by the looters of the Crawl-Mart.

The next four days in Magnet City were a madhouse. But in the end, a much-less-wealthy Mayor Tripleface found himself being hounded out of office.

The Chimpanzian diplomat Proconsul, whose own people didn't know he had been murdered by a Lazytaxie Face Twister, had left many living relatives. One of these, his kid sister Lucasta, was in the habit of looking after her big brother's house when he was off-planet, since Proconsul's dear wife Gadrima had passed away four Chimpanzian years ago.

Right around the same time as heroes on "Terra" were seeking to cure Captain Sha-Na-Na of being a coward, Lucasta was dusting and sweeping and airing out her brother's house.... when she made a discovery which rocked her world.

In a dresser drawer lay a good-luck pendant, which had been an heirloom of the late Gadrima's family, passed from mothers to daughters. Having no daughters, Proconsul had figured to keep the charm for his own lifetime, then leave it to Lucasta if none of his in-laws asked for it. And "keep it for his lifetime" was literal truth. Since Gadrima's demise, Proconsul had never left his native planet WITHOUT carrying the memento of his wife.

This was not a trivial change in the simian diplomat's routines.

Lucasta had a boyfriend who was an agent for the Chimpanzian Bureau of Investigation. She must, and would, persuade Antilacor to start some kind of investigation. She stifled her own initial idea of sending a message to Directvideo to ask Proconsul about his forgetting of the pendant.... because now she felt a shuddering dread that it WASN'T her brother who had gone to Directvideo.

In the Fictional-Characters-Brought-To-Life Department of AsaLion's Country, Proconsul and Gadrima had been enjoying their wonderful heavenly reunion; but they didn't want their sister/sister-in-law back in the mortal realm to be tormented by doubt and confusion. So they asked AsaLion to make it so that the wicked Fooldemall (Proconsul knew now who his murderer was) would be exposed and brought to justice.

"Don't worry," the God-Lion told them. "Justice will be served in the way that works best for a good story."

On the Earth where the band Skinny Leopard existed, this Earth's versions of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Enya Brennan appeared together on a talk show hosted by this Earth's version of Madeleine Liliestam. Being much younger than the other two artists, Madeleine made it her business to feed them questions about the history of popular music expressing human nature, desires and hopes.

"My lyricist, this Earth's version of Roma Ryan, should be on this program," said Enya early on. "She's the one who made my music SPEAK to our fans' minds as well as their hearts. But since I'm here, I can unabashedly praise Roma's work, where she might get all modest about it.

"There's an elderly American gentleman in Colorado, a retired Navy veteran and a C.S. Lewis fan, who has been widowed twice. After his first bereavement, he was helped by our song 'Wild Child.' He says that after his Mary died, from then on, the refrain of 'Wild Child' always sounded to him as if I-- that is, Roma and I were promising him that he would make it through. This, I like to think, is an example of emotion working in its proper place: not rejecting truth and reason, but giving strength to a man in pain, helping him struggle back toward the place where he'll be ABLE to deal with truth again."

"Well, said, Enya," Stevie declared. "There's plenty of room for helpful emotional expression; I should know, being a blues artist. What's unfortunate is that some songwriters LITERALLY DO promote a permanent rejection of truth and reason, in favor of nonstop, twenty-four-seven emotionalism. Consider these words:

" 'Lighten up while you still can;
Don't even try to understand;
Just find a place to make your stand....'

"It isn't every day that a band can fit three blatantly, harmfully false messages into three lines.

"To say 'Lighten up while you still can' is to imply that your hearers are currently knocking themselves out with constant work and responsibility and maturity and obligation and performance of duty, so they really NEED to lighten up for a change. But this band knew very well that they were singing for an audience which already wanted to maximize fun and leisure. So this line was like telling a glutton that he 'deserves' to enjoy a third bowl of ice cream.

"To say 'Don't even try to understand' is a sort of self-contradiction, because if you say this to people, you are calling on them TO UNDERSTAND that they shouldn't try to understand."

Here Madeleine interjected, "I see where you're going. The real intent of saying not to try to understand is to convince the hearers that they don't need to bother about understanding WHAT IS TRUE AND RIGHT."

"Yep. Then there's the punchline. If you've told people not to carry responsibility, and you've told them not to think logically, then suggesting that they 'make a stand' becomes meaningless. You haven't left them anything to stand FOR."

Enya sighed. "Except their own juvenile appetites. Then they can pretend they're being heroic by throwing tantrums to get their way."

At a motel in western Pennsylvania-- with the Selenium Falcon parked nearby-- the whole group which had come from Srirachiss to Seedubb gathered to confer, joined by Zoorama and Spiderweb-Man.

Looking at Bot Index, Bunkem Isotope said, "This planet has enough technology that we should be able to collate clues to locate Opposite Whoosh. He seems to be the most competent of the villains remaining at large; with him taken off the table, our work on Seedubb might be finished, and we could go on to seek other battlefields." He looked at Spiderweb-Man. "I don't mean we're tired of the friends we've made here! We've barely gotten to know most of you."

Spiderweb-Man shrugged. "You might find me boring in my civilian life. But all of us are glad you've helped."

Groan Starr looked embarrassed. "I've been hardly any help, except at clearing traffic jams and catching telemarketers."

Saddened by her man's discouragement, Vixen stroked his arm. "Don't feel so bad, sweetheart. You did great in a familiar environment. We're barely starting to learn about this world and how it works."

"I sure was a slow starter as a superhero," offered Spiderweb-Man.

"And even IN familiar settings," Puke told his best friend, "I nearly crashed our ship twice. That was early on."

Zoorama smiled. "I like Bunkem's idea. Groan, you'll be learning things even WHILE conducting surveillance. Your party could leave your ship under guard at Spark Laboratories, so no one will know where you go; then move into the Bat-Grotto for a while, and look over Batfellow's shoulder while HE collates information."

Now to follow the Justified League for a while....

At the Justified Hall on Urth, Braziiian Flame reported on her just-finished trip escorting Charles Crazier, helping to keep him safe while he visited various national capitals. The purpose had been to probe the minds of leaders, verifying that they would NOT try to use the Senphatorian technology to attack other nations-- which, of course, was a stipulation in the sharing of technology. Journalists were also present, including Superdude's close friend Jimmy Ulcer.

Professor Crazier and Vigilant Cowboy were not in attendance; the former was now visiting the latter's therapy ranch, to find out whether Cowboy's ex-girlfriend Ruby Spruce was genuinely sorry for her contemptuous abandonment of him years ago.

"Iran and Venezuela appear to be the only violators," Flame told the gathering, "But it's disturbing how clever they were about it. In both cases, the Professor initially thought he was reading honesty in them; but by further scanning, he picked up signs that their minds had been tampered with. So, in each case, he demanded to meet with more officials, including medical professionals who had treated the leaders. In Venezuela, the first of those two that we visited, I had to threaten-- forceful action-- to get them to comply. And yes, they WERE hoping-- not to attack anyone immediately, but to keep the OPTION of attacking their neighbors.

"All of us agreed from the start that any nation involved in the starflight project had every right to plan ahead for DEFENSE against anyone attacking them with Senphatorian technology; but the Venezuelan regime definitely was contemplating AGGRESSION against Colombia and other South American countries. Professor Crazier and I let them know that they were on probation; any new suspicious conduct will result in their Tachyon Loop hardware being confiscated by the League. They clearly sent a warning to Tehran, because the rulers there were more devious about trying to hide their guilt. They laid a false trail, making it seem as if there had been a PROPOSAL to cheat but it had been rejected. The Professor was majorly tired by the time he unravelled all their lies.

"The Professor and I judged that we'd better not be harder on Iran than we had been on Venezuela; that could multiply the geopolitical tension. We're strong enough, especially with most other nations backing our play, that we can afford a bit of leniency."

Moistureman grinned. "Meanwhile, we can make some 'harmless' appearances. Venezuela has plenty of seacoast. I could 'just happen' to swim up a river, and emerge uncomfortably near to a project site. Uncomfortably for the dictatorship, that is."

Superhottie smiled at the suggestion. "I could do a flyover of Iran in the same way, dropping the same hint. And you can be sure that I would NOT wear a burka to please the uber-patriarchs there."

Sir Jasper the Gleaming Knight rose from where he sat beside Stellar Sapphire. "Wary we must be, not to fancy that, merely because three members of the Gang of Naughty Persons have seen the light--" (Stella kissed his hand when he said this) "--the rest will cross over with suchlike ease. It may be that the others, in desperate, prideful defiance, will cast their lot with precisely the wicked lords who have now shown themselves faithless. The foul Sullivan Grungy, for instance, is most extraordinarily hard of heart. Have any friends of ours shared any tidings of that ghoulish ruffian?"

Jimmy Ulcer spoke up: "I can answer that, insofar as conventional information sources are concerned. If Sullivan Grungy were sighted, the media would be babbling about him day and night."

Black Parakeet looked at Aluminum Banshee; being firm friends by now, they were sitting together. "Lumina, Martin and Stella have long since told us about all villain-hideouts known to them. The still-evil metahumans will have needed to start from zero to establish safe bolt-holes; this being so, I would be surprised if they DIDN'T seek to join forces with Venezuela or Iran."

"Alternatively," said Banshee, "they might have decided that they could put us off the scent by NOT going to either of those countries. Instead, they might have sneaked into some nation which HAS NOT attempted to get into Tachyon Loop development. Like Yemen or Cuba. A country which didn't feel confident competing in the new space race might consider it a better move to hire their own covert super-villains."

Barely half an hour after this conference ended, the League received bad news: the zombie-golem-ish Sullivan Grungy had unaccountably escaped from his prison. It seemed that he had TELEPORTED away, though this was not part of his known power menu.

In Urth's version of Denmark, after midnight, a silent masked figure in black slipped along the waterfront of Copenhagen. On this Earth-variant, the Oresund Tunnel connecting Copenhagen with Malmo, Sweden had never been constructed. Therefore, the mystery man calling himself Squire Vindictive (or "V For Vindictive") was watching the all-night ferryboats coming in from Sweden.

Squire Vindictive, born Schuyler Vinson, was a sort of marginal metahuman. A covert organization in Britain, similar to the people running The Village in the Sixties TV series "The Prisoner," had kidnaped him in 2014, and proceeded to subject him to exactly the kind of experiments where the bad guys never figure out that their victim could become powerful enough to punish them for kidnaping him. Squire had not become anywhere near as powerful as Superdude, nor anywhere near as unkillable as Wolverine in Marvel movies; but he had suffered a disfigured face, and had become strong enough to burst his restraints and overpower his tormentors. And, though not at all indestructible, he had also become able to survive more damage than an ordinary man could.

Being an honest man, the ex-captive had tried to play by the rules. He had called the police..... only to have them arrest HIM, for "going beyond proportionate response." The "proportionate response" doctrine was a travesty also existing on Original Earth, requiring a VICTIM of criminal assault to try to GUESS how much force the assailant would use, and to fight back only within that limit.

The victim in this case had already known about "proportionate response" before his misfortunes began; if that had been all that worked against him, he would not have been astonished by this much injustice. But in court, he heard his prosecutor flat-out lying-- that the evil experimenters had been trying to CURE him of a rare illness. This was when he had realized that his tormentors had BOUGHT the justice system. Therefore, he had escaped from prison at his first opportunity. On his way out, he had fortuitously discovered a stash of illegal firearms which guards were involved in smuggling; he had forced the culprits to give him all the money they had on hand, under threat of exposing the racket. The firearms might have been traceable, so he didn't bother taking any; but he did help himself to a collection of knives, chains and shuriken, which he was now strong enough to use with devastating effect.

Thus began his vendetta against the secret evildoers. He never even tried to request aid from the Justified League, because he didn't trust them. He had already been betrayed by supposed public servants who only served themselves. He simply avoided doing anything which might make someone like Superdude regard him as a serious villain who had to be stopped. The League certainly was not lifting a finger to thwart or even denounce the mad-scientist cabal. So Squire Vindictive, never crossing the League's path, waged his own campaign.

The wistful hope that kept him going night after night was the hope that the Justified League WASN'T actually on the side of the cabal. Their having fought against Twerpseid proved nothing; if the Gang of Naughty Persons had resisted the invasion to save their own lives, the same could be true of the Justified League. If Superdude and the others really WERE so noble as they boasted they were.... then maybe someday they would HELP Squire Vindictive, instead of unjustly arresting him.

When hope is all you have, you hold on tightly to it. And when part of your hope involves catching an evil conspirator coming to Copenhagen from Sweden, you do your best to catch him.

Suddenly-- there the target was!

Warner Weezul was the prosecutor who had accepted a huge payoff (as had the presiding judge) to convict the innocent Schuyler Vinson. Such a huge payoff, that he could have retired right then. But the shadowy schemers had instructed Weezul not to retire for at least one year after the unjust imprisonment of Mister Vinson. A contact man had told Vinson: "If you became a wealthy playboy immediately after putting Vinson behind bars, EVEN this justice system just might smell a rat. And an uncovered rat would be..... a serious embarrassment to us. Dead serious. But if you stay on your job long enough that the potential scandal fades away, then we can afford to leave you still breathing. And you might then be available to perform some future service for us."

It had proven to be a win-win. Weezul had indeed helped to convict inconvenient people whom he knew to be innocent, and had gained the lasting goodwill of those who had bribed him in the first place. Even after they gave him the okay to retire, he found ways to be useful. In particular, the three comfortable houses he owned outside the United Kingdom (in Sweden, Egypt and Malaysia) now routinely served as safe houses for bad guys traveling secretly. Meanwhile, the crooked judge who had wrongly sentenced Vinson had gotten greedy, and eventually caused the schemers to terminate him with prejudice.

Taking this lesson to heart, Weezul had stayed on the good side of his paymasters. Along the way, he had been told a name by which he could refer to them: The Raincoat Corporation.

This name was a piece of misdirection. These evildoers weren't any kind of corporation, least of all an evil international banking network. None of them had any interest in being even slightly honest businessmen. They were simply well-organized thieves, murderers, human traffickers, and would-be world rulers. They knew they had a long way to go before they could combat the Justified League, but they were on the path. Meanwhile, since they enjoyed great influence on all mass media, they kept on telling the public that everything was about EEEEE-vil business corporations. They maintained prominent fall guys who could be sacrificed at need, to keep themselves unnoticed.

At the innermost core of the network, they frequently changed the name they privately used for their group: another way of covering their tracks. Most recently, they had been calling themselves The Boardroom of Owls; but Warner Weezul didn't know this name.

Squire Vindictive did know this name, but also knew that it might be changed again at any time, so he didn't set much store by it.

Behind his Commedia del'Arte -style mask, Mister Vinson allowed himself an ugly smile. Soon, the former prosecutor would be the one required to give answers.

This happy expectation, however, was shattered a moment later.... when he saw that the crook was accompanied by a beautiful Swedish woman, and four blond children of whom the eldest was addressing Weezul as "Fader."

This man had robbed Schuyler Vinson of the freedom to enjoy marriage and fatherhood. But regardless of the alias he had adopted, Squire Vindictive was not so vindictive that he would want to rob children of THEIR father, even by means of getting him arrested. He would have to change his plans. He would continue tracing Weezul's movements, hoping to accomplish something without bloodshed.

Maybe he would finally learn secrets which he could present to The Justified League.

Back in the United States, a day and a half after Squire Vindictive tracked Mister Weezul in Copenhagen, one of the less famous members of the Justified League (one who had been in the battle against Twerpseid, but had been in the former Soviet Union fighting the Pukedemon landing there) was minding the store at the headquarters. Aluminum Banshee was there too; the others had entrusted her with looking after the place, as a sign of their confidence in her. The less-famous hero, handsome, black-haired Dmitri Tarasov, known to English speakers as Tapper Cossack, struck up a conversation with her. They were expecting a visit from scientists interested in a possible cure for Atomic Scalp; but there was time available for getting acquainted.

"Kak vas zovut po-nastoyashchemu? Excuse me, Miss Banshee, I meant to say, what's your actual name?"

The former evildoer suddenly blushed; but with her pale gray complexion it looked bluish-purple. No one, friend or foe, had ever addressed her as "MISS Banshee." She replied, "I don't like to think of my past life, because it was IN my past that I lusted after power."

"Shto takoye? That means, 'WHAT????' Surely now that you're na storonye dobrodeyatelei, I mean on the side of good, no name you bear can be a disgrace." She could not help noticing that the tall Russian was looking at her exactly as if she were the most normal, average woman on Urth. Her blushing intensified, and the readers of this story began to suspect that the ex-villainess was moving closer to a normal human life. To which the author says Yes, as a matter of fact, she is, because I like happy endings.

With a shy quietness in her voice, Aluminum Banshee told Tapper Cossack, "As a sign of my conversion, I now prefer to use the name that my new friend Black Parakeet gave me. She calls me Lumina."

"Then may I also call you that, krasavitsa?" As soon as that last word left his mouth, Dmitri was the one blushing. Banshee-- or Lumina-- dared not allow herself to believe.... but she couldn't restrain herself from asking:

"Did you just call me beautiful?"

He bowed gallantly. "Strictly speaking, I used the noun meaning a beautiful girl or woman; but yes. Before you utter any bashful denials, let me say my piece. I know more of your history than you know of mine. In your lifetime, you have been around people of European, African or Native American ancestry more than Asian. But I myself am part Asian."

"I confess I wondered about that. I always thought of ethnic Russians as having yellow hair."

"Only those of us with Swedish or German ancestry. Now, you see that I have the upturned Slavic nose, but my skin and hair coloring matches my mother, who is a Kazakh."

"A Cossack, you say?"

Dmitri grinned cheerfully. "You just asked for a lesson in ethnic history! I said I'm part Asian. The Kazakh people are an Asian race, sort of midway between Turks and Tatars. My maternal ancestors lived as nomads going back to the Stone Age, and nobody on Urth domesticated horses any earlier than the Kazakhs did. Our ancient history is identical to that of Kazakhs on Original Earth. Now, after my PA-ternal ancestors got payback against their Tatar-Mongol conquerors, and conquered THEM in turn, Russian culture grew more diverse.

"There were many Russians of middle and lower social class who were attracted to the free, roving life of the Central Asian horse clans. The Kazakhs, being one of the more numerous peoples in that category, served as role models. Pay attention to pronunciation here: the Asiatic ethnic term ends with a guttural consonant, thus Kaza-KHUH. The Russian imitators made a small phonetic distinction, ending their group term with a plain 'K'. Their version, 'Kazak,' passed into English as 'Cossack'."

Aluminum Banshee nodded, her long white hair gracefully swinging as she did. "I never knew any of that, and I thank you for curing my ignorance. But, well, could we maybe go back to the part where I'm beautiful?"

"S'udo-volstviyem, which means 'with pleasure.' To the best of my knowledge, not counting your shame for having formerly done evil, there are only two reasons why you DON'T believe yourself to be attractive. One reason is your own unusual pigmentation; and frankly, any man who finds you otherwise attractive will never be put off by such a small detail. The other item is your short, upturned nose. This is why I referred to your lesser knowledge of Asian ethnic groups. Your nose, exactly as it is now, is very much like an ASIAN nose. And from the neck down-- only a lack of self-esteem, or else false modesty, could ever move you to say that your physical figure ISN'T wonderfully beautiful."

From the time she had been altered into her present form, Lumina had assumed that her new power was a devil's bargain, one which would never allow her to experience human love. But the butterflies now swirling inside her told a more hopeful story. However..... there was a nightmarish negative not yet dealt with.

"Uh, Dmitri.... if you know my history, then you know that my voice could potentially kill a person. Mercifully, thanks to following the comicbook villains' ethic, I so far HAVEN'T ever killed anyone-- unless you count Pukedemons, which are soulless." Unplanned tears appeared in her eyes. "But if something, well, made me lose emotional control, it's possible that my voice MIGHT kill someone. And I couldn't live with it if I slew-- slew an innocent person."

Tapper Cossack nodded, manifestly unworried. "This is my cue to say something about my own history. I'll bet you don't know anything about MY powers..... That's what I thought. It so happens that Dmitri Leonidovich Tarasov CANNOT BE HARMED BY SONIC VIBRATIONS."

Lumina stared in disbelief, unable to speak.

But Tapper Cossack was fully able to speak. "That, lovely one, is why I am not afraid to tell you that you are beautiful. You couldn't kill me if you tried to on purpose, unless you used a gun or stabbed me from behind. Shall we continue our conversation? Well, I'm going to continue it. You're beautiful to me, even if you DON'T say anything."

Neither Dmitri nor Lumina Banshee realized what a shameless matchmaking effort was afoot. Dmitri, being already acquainted with Black Parakeet, had confessed to her that he was fascinated with Aluminum Banshee; but he had not asked her to do anything on his behalf. It was all Parakeet's idea to intercept the visiting scientists, to become their interviewer herself, and to let Dmitri's naturally romantic personality go to work on the lonely and guilt-haunted Lumina.

Something else Lumina hadn't known about Russian people was that they were as fond of tea as were the Chinese and Japanese. Dmitri had brought packages of real, crushed tea leaves from home; using hot water from the Hall's kitchenette, he made some for them both.

"M'yed?" he asked.

"What's that???"

"Sorry, that's the Russian word for 'honey.' As in, do you want honey in your tea?"

Aluminum Banshee brightened up, almost laughing. "And you were hesitant to ADDRESS ME as 'honey.' That's just adorable. Please don't think it makes me a sourpuss if I want lemon juice also."

Dmitri smiled back. "If you drink both, I'll drink both."

They sat down with their cups, and gave the tea a minute to cool.

"Please tell me more about your powers, Dmitri Leonidovich."

"In a manner of speaking, they came from my grandmother, by way of her son, my father. My father Leonid was born early in the Brezhnev era. During his childhood, Grandmother often secretly sang to him songs which represented defiance to tyranny: anything from jazz to punk rock to Baptist hymns. Later, as a young man, before I was born, Papa stood in the Living Circle on that fateful day in Moscow, the day when soldiers refused to fire on the anti-Communist demonstrators. This happened before Superdude grew into his powers, and before the infant Superhottie even came to Urth at all; so there were no invincible Tonkrypians to require the Politburo to grant the people justice.

"There was a Green Flashlight for Urth back then, an Indonesian woman named Nurul Bagaskoro; but she had thirty-three other planets to protect, and she feared that short-term interventions on Earth would do no good if she couldn't be around to follow through. There was a reasonably strong hero in Canada named Captain Excess, but he wasn't powerful enough to give orders to a nation. Thus we were on our own in Russia.

"My father played for life-and-death stakes, as did Boris Yeltsin. Mere hours after the turning point in Moscow, Papa sang Grandmother's songs openly to my mother and elder sisters, to celebrate the passing of Bolshevik oppression.

"I first heard the songs with some comprehension when I was six. That was when I first felt it: music making me physically stronger. But I think the tea is ready to drink now."

An impulse came to the ex-villainess, one that she ventured to hope would not seem TOO forward. "May I show you a way that..... friends.... sometimes drink together?" He nodded, so she continued: "Hold your cup a little away from you, as if you were going to pass it to me, but keep it in your hand. Good. Now, I move my hand to the far side of yours, so each of us has our cup close to the other one's face."

"And each drinks from the other's cup?"

"Some people may do it that way, but the way I mean is that we each drink from our own cup, only like this." She hooked her own elbow completely around the Cossack's elbow, and pulled, so that they both leaned closer together. "Do the same with your arm, then we drink."

Normally, this emotionally intimate gesture would be maintained only long enough to swallow a little of the beverage. But Dmitri didn't know this; or, if he did know it, he was prepared to pretend he didn't know. Feeling deliciously naughty, and delighted that she could feel deliciously naughty about something benign, Lumina kept their arms linked while she spoke again. "So that experience from your youth is connected with your immunity to noise damage, right?"

"So it is." Dmitri took his second swallow of tea, making no move to withdraw his arm from hers. "Only music (vocal or instrumental, recorded or live) positively empowers me, but no sound vibration can ever injure me. This immunity even extends to anything like hypnotism: no SPOKEN WORD can succeed in maliciously deceiving me, or in controlling my mind against my will."

Lumina emptied her cup. Then, still not releasing their elbow-clasp, she asked for a refill. Catching the spirit of her action, Dmitri first drained his own cup also; then he demonstrated his manual dexterity by refilling each cup WHILE their arms remained linked. "Remember the honey and lemon," Lumina half-teased. He even managed this, and she was truly impressed.

"Further about my powers, krasavitsa. In my default state, my physical ability is equal to six men-- if one of these men is an Olympic boxer, one is an Olympic wrestler, one is an Olympic long-distance runner, another is an Olympic swimmer, another is an Olympic gymnast, and the sixth is a Cossack. The Cossack part adds horsemanship, sword and dagger fighting, DIRTY fighting, rifle marksmanship, and of course dancing to balalaika music. Hearing music doubles my ability while it continues, and for about half a minute after it stops. I have determined that percussion instruments by themselves, if played with musical intent, are sufficient to strengthen me."

Feeling that she was being wildly bold, Lumina lightly rubbed her snub nose against his bare, well-muscled forearm. "Awesome, Dmitri, AWE-some. Is there anything else to tell?"

"There is: the most unusual element of my empowerment. When I dance-- especially in Cossack style, though I find it also works when I do tap dance, ballroom swing or interpretive jazz dance-- it makes other people want to dance also, and gives them greater skill in dancing than they ever had before. This effect is not unlimited; people in the very midst of a fight to the death, for instance, won't be distracted by my influence. But there've been times when I started dancing soon enough to PREVENT people from getting into fights."

"You strike me as a well rounded man, Dmitri."

"And you, krasavitsa, though not Russian, seem to me like the embodiment of Russia's hope. What I mean is that my homeland was long sunk in depths of evil, but my own lifetime has witnessed my people striving toward freedom. The sight of you, knowing how you have been liberated, is like a vision of Mother Russia cleansed from all evil. Not that you would be any less attractive to me if there were no Russian analogy to be drawn. You have it in you to-- you have more possibilities for good than you may realize."

Lumina could not remember when she had felt her heart pounding so eagerly. And there was no vagueness anymore about what she wanted. All the aching emptiness of wasted years hung in contrast with what this newly-met hero seemed to offer her.

The tea was finished, so they had to unlink their arms to put the cups down. Two seconds later, however, Aluminum Banshee seized Tapper Cossack's hands in hers. "Please show me how your dancing works. Pretend that I'm close to getting into a needless fight with someone, and you want to make peace."

Dmitri's smile, and his eyes, became warmer still. He stood up, drawing her with him. "One thing I know you have plenty of is aerobic endurance. Therefore, you can easily sing a song for us to dance TO, even while we're doing it."

Lumina's eyes gleamed-- with joyful tears; because even if Dmitri wasn't feeling as romantic as she urgently hoped he was feeling, just this much male attention was already more than she had believed she would ever get. She began to sing a song which was very similar in mood to ABBA's song "Take a Chance on Me" from Original Earth.

And before she knew it, he lifted her high above his head as if she weighed only ounces. She didn't stop singing. When her feet found the floor again, she was dancing with the Russian hero, dancing as expertly as a Russian ballerina. They whirled and swooped, leaped and leaned, swayed and hopped; came together, moved apart, came closer together, moved less far apart, came together for longer, moved apart for less time; separated only very slightly, and then what-the-heck, went into an outright embrace, caressing and squeezing each other. They stayed in this clinch for as long as Lumina could manage to keep singing. Though possessing less muscular strength than his, she was strong enough that his holding her very very tight caused her no distress. Far from it.

They were half a centimeter away from kissing, when Dmitri leaned away just a little bit. "Yes, God witness it, I do want to; but I don't want to be taking advantage of emotional vulnerability on your part. If we pause this right now, you can consider whether you genuinely want to proceed."

Lumina breathed hard, then murmured, "You really are a superhero! I believe that I'll still want this tomorrow, next week, and next decade; but I'll try to be an adult."

The scientists were still in the next room with Black Parakeet, so Dmitri and Lumina decided to join them. That they held hands the whole time till the conference was completed was an unconscious action for both of them... but Black Parakeet was fully aware of it, and wanted to do some singing and dancing for their sakes. When they told her they simply were trying not to go too fast, this only made Parakeet more optimistic about the end result.

Black Parakeet had previously confided in Greg Sutter the Vigilant Cowboy her belief that Dmitri Tarasov would be the perfect man for Lumina. So as soon as Greg heard where Dmitri and Lumina now stood, he texted an invitation to Dmitri to visit the ranch: If you're with me, the Banshee gal will know you ain't with any other woman. I got a fine young mare that you can borrow to show the kids your trick riding. So Dmitri accepted the invitation.

Before the Cossack left the headquarters, Corky "Superdude" Klint and the "expecting" Luisa Dane Klint had a talk with Dmitri. "I know that Banshee's change to goodness is absolutely genuine. For her, the next thing after quitting crime is the same as it is for Scalpie: try to be normal at last. Corky and I both expected at first that if Scalpie could get his flame switched off, he and Banshee would be perfect for each other. But they're definitely in mutual friend zone."

"Do you know about Ruby Spruce?" asked Superdude. When Dmitri answered in the negative, Corky continued: "She was Greg's girlfriend a few years ago. I happened to save her life once, no different from saving anyone else."

Luisa side-hugged her super-husband. "Yeah, Corky has this foolish quirk of not wanting people to die if he can prevent it. But Ruby decided that Corky being a Tonkrypian somehow made poor Greg unworthy. She knew she had no chance of stealing Corky from me, but Corky's very existence made her discontented with an 'ordinary' man. We heard that she persuaded the Clean Hornet to date her a few times, but he still wasn't super enough to suit her."

"After that," Superdude added, "nobody in the League bothered finding out what she was up to. You might remember the Meteor Monsters attacking all over South America before Twerpseid came our way?"

"Kon-yetch-nuh {Of course}. I was helping out in Argentina while you were saving Peru and Bolivia."

"Well, that made us all forget Ruby Spruce. But it appears that SHE didn't altogether forget Greg. He was remarkably heroic in the defense of Panama, and very nearly got killed. Whatever else was going on in her head, she finally seems to have grasped that someone like Vigilant Cowboy is BRAVER than I am, because he knows how easily he could get killed. Now she's telling the world that she wants him back."

Dmitri frowned thoughtfully. "What matters most is whether Grigoriy--" (he instinctively used the Russian form of the Vigilant Cowboy's first name) "--sees any reason why he should even give her the time of day now."

Luisa touched Dmitri's shoulder. "You're enough of a kindred spirit to Greg, that we think you can help him to make up his mind. Parakeet thinks the same."

"Lad-nuh. {Fine} Will Parakeet help Lumina to keep occupied while I'm away?"

Superdude answered, "Yes, with more singing gigs. One of those will be held in Maquoketa, Iowa, as a show of solidarity with Atomic Scalp."

The latest human patient at Restoration Ranch was an autistic thirteen-year-old boy from Ohio, named Matthew Carver. Greg assigned the ranch worker Taffy to teach Matthew how to handle, maintain and store "tack," meaning saddles and all other hardware connected with making horses rideable. Each item had its place in the tack room, and its place on a horse's body; this knowledge was a dose of reassuring structure and predictability for a high-functioning autistic.

The female professor Temple Grandin existed on Urth as well as on Original Earth. An autistic herself, Professor Grandin had found that understanding animal behavior helped her also to understand human behavior. Urth's version of Temple Grandin had visited Greg's ranch four times, and these visits had become known to the telepath Charles Crazier. Professor Crazier had done a mind-meld with Professor Grandin, imparting improvements to her emotional stability, without ruining her unique insights.

On her latest visit to the ranch, Grandin informally mentored Taffy: expressing approval of the girl's efforts for Matthew so far, and leading a conversation about how Taffy should find more pastimes which the boy could undertake in a structured way. Then she got around to asking Taffy about the marvellous winged stallion with human intelligence, who was a frequent visitor to the ranch. "Is Winged Virtue real?"

Taffy blinked. "Of course he's real! I've rubbed him down and groomed him twice!"

"In that case, I understand why it startles you for me NOT to know about him. But understand this: even without considering alien planets, Urth by itself is big enough that no one this side of God can be thinking about everything on it at once. Everybody knows that superheroes, less than one month ago, saved us from Twerpseid; but they saved us TO go on living our lives, and our lives are already full of events. Firemen and electrical workers are also vitally important, but we don't think about them every day."

"Point taken, Temple." (Grandin had established early on that it was all right for the ranch workers to call her by her first name.) "So let me tell you something you may not have heard about. The magic which gave Winged Virtue his powers of intelligence and flight was a somatic change, not a genetic one. Which means that he can't pass those gifts on to his offspring. But he CAN pass along a high degree of intelligence and long lifespan to his offspring. There are already five colts and four yearlings of Winged Virtue's blood, out of mares owned by Greg, and Greg says they're the smartest and healthiest normal colts he's ever dealt with."

Professor Grandin replied, "Then that explains why, when I arrived here, some of the young animals were looking at me as if they were actually THINKING about me. But speaking of mares: do you know anything you're not expected to keep secret about that ex-girlfriend of Greg's who wants to win him back?"

"Not much. I know that Superhottie personally transported Miss Spruce to someplace just the other day, but I don't know why."

/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

The Justified Hall featured several excellent residential apartments on its upper floors. Adam and Proxima Straightup occupied one of these on the topmost floor, when they weren't globetrotting in support of Tachyon Loop construction projects. And one floor down was the "hideout" (she herself called it this, half jokingly) of Aluminum Banshee, whose new name of Lumina was catching on with everyone who liked her. If the truth were known, Lumina was more popular by now than she could bring herself to believe; this, partly because of her singing appearances with Black Parakeet. Those concerts had humanized her in the eyes of the public. In fact, Lumina now had a weblog and a social-media account, both of which daily received messages from her male admirers. To them, she was exotic rather than grotesque.

But Lumina's heart was filled to the ceiling with exactly one man, Tapper Cossack. This gave her common ground with a non-metahuman woman, who also wanted only one man. Since they didn't want the SAME hero, and since the man for whom Ruby Spruce yearned was friends with the man for whom Lumina yearned, it was natural for the two women to become friends. After the visit to Professor Crazier, Superhottie had carried Ruby to Justified League headquarters to meet Lumina-- and, by Lumina's invitation, had stayed to talk.

"Lumina, I told Ruby how much you want more female friends. And since no less than the world's premier telepath certifies Ruby as NOT being a cynical schemer, I believe you and she will get on famously." Ruby accordingly extended a hand, and Lumina shook it.

"Miss Banshee, it's an honor to meet you. It's an honor that you WANTED to meet me, when you already have super-powered female friends."

"Please, Ruby, call me Lumina. And if you're not already doing so, I know Superhottie will be fine with you addressing her as Clara. Of course I'm glad that Stella made the crossing with me, and grateful to Parakeet, Superhottie and Flame for being so kind to me. But for my emotional health, human female-ness in a friend is more important than metahuman powers."

The cousin of Superdude lightly tapped Ruby's shoulder. "I have not told Lumina what you told me about Professor Crazier's findings."

Turning again toward Lumina, Ruby said, "Charles confirmed that I don't want Greg back just because his ranch business makes enough money to give me a comfortable lifestyle. I do well enough running my nail salon--"

Lumina impulsively interrupted: "Nail salon? Could you do something with MY goblin-claws?"

Superhottie interrupted the interruption. "Lumina, sweetie, everyone has told you that your finger- and toenails being sturdy doesn't make them hideous."

Just like that, Ruby Spruce became the visiting expert. "Here, let me see your fingers.... Clara is right, they're not hideous at all, only strong. Later, we can talk about your options for a free nail job at my salon. But where were we?"

"We were talking about your telepathic interview," Clara/Superhottie reminded Ruby.

"Right. Lumina, you have the experience of making a fundamental jump from evil to good. I wish my situation WERE that simple. Professor Crazier told me that I never meant to be selfish or treacherous. He didn't want to say aloud that I was an idiot, but I'm sure he was thinking it.

"I wasn't engaged to Greg when I left him; and I've learned second-hand that Greg makes allowance for this in his mind. But his not hating me is not the same thing as wanting to give me a second chance. He's more famous and popular now than he was when I left him; now, he can take his pick from thousands of women younger than I am, who HAVEN'T hurt him. So what chance do I have?"

Lumina surprised herself, and surprised the other two women, by hugging Ruby closely, front to front. While doing this, she began softly humming at a low pitch. The fact that her voice could give added strength to Dmitri had started her wondering whether she could benefit others in a similar way. And it seemed that she could. Ruby relaxed, leaned more closely into the metahuman lady's embrace, and rested her head on Lumina's shoulder. Realizing what was happening, and sentimentally touched by the tableau of compassion, Superhottie supplied some appropriate words, in order that Lumina need not interrupt her impromptu therapy on Ruby by speaking.

"Ruby, I think you have a very good chance. Greg is not a party animal; he wasn't that, even when he was a rodeo performer. He comes right out of the design specifications for classical cowboy heroes in black-and-white cinema. True love is the only kind of love he's capable of."

"But I haven't BEEN true to him!" Ruby lamented.

"At least you didn't break any positive promise to him."

Ruby whimpered. "Not an up-front promise, not a notarized contract. But I certainly encouraged him to believe that I would say yes if he asked me to marry him. Then I threw it all away, just for the sake of an impossible highschool-girl crush on Superdude. And Superdude being unavailable didn't stop me from chasing other guys who seemed more glamorous than Greg. Even really good men like the Clean Hornet weren't good enough to meet my delusional requirements. I just wasted my best years for nothing."

"You're still beautiful," murmured Superhottie, "and still young enough to have one or more children safely."

Ruby gave the Tonkrypian demi-goddess a half-smile. "That would be more comfort to me if the long delay in marrying Greg were because of some situation I had no control over. But the years I lost were years I spent viewing Greg with contempt. Well, those years, plus three weeks of nonstop kicking myself after I finally saw the light in a church. So even if Greg lets me come back to him, it'll take MORE years for me to regain his full trust. If I even can regain it."

Stroking Ruby's hair, Lumina told her, "Well, for what it's worth: Stella, Scalpie and I all gained people's trust almost instantly after we changed sides. In fact, Sir Jasper married Stella almost before the dust had settled from the fight with Twerpseid."

Ruby went from relaxing in Lumina's embrace, to hugging her in return. "Bless you, Lumina! You're twice as good now as you ever were bad before, if that makes sense."

"It does, and thank you." Lumina felt almost as happy from being able to comfort a sad person, as she felt from knowing that a gallant Cossack romantically desired her.

Now Ruby buried her face in Lumina's shoulder again. "But when you came out of evil, people knew that a super-space-alien character helped you to make the change. And you had already earned public approval by fighting the Pukedemons."

Superhottie gently patted Ruby's back. "No one blames you for not being a metahuman or a soldier."

Lumina picked up on the thought: "Besides, you also have your own celebrity endorsement. Charles Crazier has great prestige with everyone who matters. He gave a favorable report on Scalpie, Stella and me; now he's on the record as declaring that you're not a bad person, you just were childish in the past." She resumed her gentle humming, leaving it to Superhottie to add: "And Greg himself, despite not being a telepath, knows human nature about as well as Professor Crazier does. His whole business, when he isn't on superhero duty, IS ABOUT helping mentally-troubled youngsters."

Ruby tightened her arms around Lumina. "In my opening appeal to Greg, a week ago or so ago, I said that he had every right to brush me off. What I didn't say was that part of me WANTED him to brush me off, to punish me with rejection, because I deserved and still do deserve to have him tell me to take a hike. I figured that in the worst case, namely the take-a-hike response, I would be making some amends to Greg by letting him have the satisfaction of paying me back, humiliation for humiliation."

"His first two loves died," said Superhottie. "You were his third, so you're the only LIVING woman he loves. I say 'loves' in present tense, because I dare to hope that his total bachelorhood since you left him shows that he does love you still."

Ruby slipped out of Lumina's arms to give Superhottie a fervent squeeze and several kisses; then she returned to Lumina's embrace.

Change of scene

Trippenwonk, the trollish hench-monster of Twerpseid, had been looking for ways to regain his master's favor since he failed to conquer Planet Senphatori. It was no fun doing the equivalent of scrubbing toilets on Planet Awkwardlisp. Finally, Twerpseid's other deputy, Greensodd, was detailed to tell Trippenwonk about a chance to redeem himself.

"Our master has taken notice of an Earth-variant which is less heavily defended than the one which our master, uh, decided in his mercy to spare from destruction." Although Trippenwonk and Greensodd were not friends, they now shared a moment of rapport as if they were friends. Their shared glance meant: --in other words, the planet where Twerpseid got his butt kicked and had to run away.

"My far-searching technology," Greensodd went on, "has determined that this version of Earth has no superheroes, and its industrial development, therefore its defensive power, is lagging far behind that of the Earth-variant which, er...."

Trippenwonk smiled. "Which our master so compassionately spared from destruction."

"Of course. Pukedemons being fairly easy to produce, you will be provided with forty thousand of them, using the very best armaments available from the Awkwardlisp Army Surplus Stores."

"How generous," Trippenwonk deadpanned.

"Actually, yes. There's a bonus. In another sub-universe, some beings who are kindred spirits to us were defeated and chased away for keeps. But seventeen of them got stranded for some reason, and were still in this galaxy. I located them, brought them to the master's attention, and recommended recruiting them. They are called Shadythings; and even without their warships, one of them is worth a hundred Pukedemons. You can use them as your special forces."

Trippenwonk felt more hopeful when he heard about the Shadythings, especially the fact that, individually, they could both turn invisible and shoot waves of fire ahead of them. On top of Twerpseid's "conventional" forces, and Trippenwonk's own personal strength, a human world lacking superheroes would have no chance.

Through a marvellous turn of circumstances, overlooked by Greensodd because plotline advancement, a whole bunch of superhero origins had taken place on the same Earth-variant beginning two months before Trippenwonk received his assignment.

It was a huge authorial mercy that these events happened, because this Earth, in 2020, was no further developed scientifically than Original Earth in about 1960. Of course, the lack of smartphones to get children addicted and oblivious to real life was a plus; also a plus was the fact that automobiles were NOT built so flimsy that a snowball would dent them. But in other ways, this Earth was in sorry shape. For instance, every time anyone tried to develop a space program, there would always be the objection: "But we've got enough problems RRRRRR-IGHT HERE on Earth!" A very smart American magazine editor (matching John W. Campbell on Original Earth) published numbers proving that a manned space program could be implemented for LESS money annually than the money Americans spent just on cigarettes. But he was ignored or shouted down. So this whole Earth remained backward-- except for the fortunate comicbook-type innovations which were providing humanity with superheroes just barely in time.

Two of these origins occurred in India. In one case, a female college student named Nitara Bagram conveniently discovered an ancient amulet in a generic spooky old temple which American action-movie characters had overlooked. The amulet enabled her to change into an almost-indestructible tiger-like monster called The Golden Rakshasa (without losing her human soul). Elsewhere in India, a boy named Arush Vhani, an elephant tender, managed a more unusual origin story. He saved a mother mongoose, and the baby mongoose she was carrying in her jaws, from being stepped on by an elephant who had not noticed them. The baby mongoose had then leaped all the way up in the air to touch Arush's forehead, magically erasing his low-caste mark. For storytelling purposes, Arush's skin acquired the cumulative damage-resistance of a hundred elephants, his reaction speed became a hundred times as fast as a mongoose.....and, for good measure, he also copied the strength and martial-arts talent of a very tall elephant rider-trainer who worked at the same elephant ranch. (For the reader's information, in real-world history, the people of India had systematic martial arts even before the Chinese had kung-fu.) Scratching for a hero-name, Arush decided to call himself the Flying Elephant.

It was a metaphor. He couldn't actually fly, though he could perform pretty decent leaps and climb trees wonderfully. He was a little annoyed when anyone asked him why he could climb trees if he was supposed to be like an elephant. "It's a METAPHOR!" he would repeat.

But the time was very close for Nitara and Arush to be desperately needed by their people.

Japan also contributed one superhero: a modern samurai called Lone Monkey. He would acquire the strength and vitality of thirty men any time there were women, children, disabled persons or senior citizens nearby who needed protection. And yes, in an extreme emergency, he would not refuse to resort to firearms, though he preferred the Japanese longbow.

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

The other superhero origins happened in the United States-- just as if a writer knew that this story-world would need superheroes in a hurry. First of all, a wealthy and well-educated businessman called Stony Stork invented a suit of powered armor which could do practically anything, because imaginary science. He became known as Iron Gent. Secondly, a painfully obese woman named Jasmine Waterford, furiously bitter because she assumed everyone was making fun of her appearance even though hardly anyone actually did so, let herself be experimented on by her male cousin who was a geeky scientist. He ended up enabling her (albeit with some irksome unpredictability) to become The Exquisite She-Hunk.

When Jasmine metamorphosed into the green-skinned, black-haired She-Hunk, she was nearly as strong as The Incredulous Clump on a different Earth. Her personality was changed as radically as her appearance, but this change went in the opposite direction from the Clump. With her figure and face hitting a balance between strength and shapeliness, she became so gorgeous that she would be a twenty on a scale of one to ten.... and her temperament became sweet, friendly, patient and forgiving beyond belief. It would require drastic necessity to make her actually fight anybody.

But the necessity was coming.

Also around this time, independently from Stony Stork's projects, four Americans (who agreed with the magazine editor) left atmosphere in an experimental rocketship. These were the genius Creed Pritchard; Air Force veteran Benton Gripp; Creed's fiancee Sushi Strum; and Sushi's reckless younger brother Jimmy Strum.

To get this reported briefly, their ship hit a mysterious radiation storm, because origin story. Tragically, Creed and Benton received lethal doses of radiation; but with heroic fortitude, they held on to life long enough to bring the ship down again, so the Strum siblings would survive. Sushi acquired the power to fly around in a fiery form and spray out flame, while Jimmy became able to turn invisible and create protective energy fields. (He could even see normally when his entire head was transparent, in spite of light hitting his retinas from all directions in three-dimensional space, because fantasy.) In consideration of what H.G. Wells had conjectured about invisibility, Jimmy could also cause his body to emit NO SCENT at all, so that animals couldn't smell him.

Vowing always to do good in honor of the departed Creed and Benton, the siblings (who never tried to conceal their identities) became known as The Fantastic Two-- the Woman Torch and the Unfindable Man.

One last addition to this Earth's new metahuman roster was an African-American singer named Whiskey Dallas. Whiskey, despite her stage name, was saved from addictive behaviors when her worthless husband perished in a car crash which was his own fault. The relief of being able to live in a healthy manner caused a miraculous new power to emerge from her singing. This resembled what happened with Aluminum Banshee, but was not identical. The newly-empowered Whiskey Dallas couldn't ATTACK anyone with her voice; but like Lumina, she could exert a degree of healing power when she sang. Most fabulously, as long as she could keep singing, she herself was completely indestructible. Even her clothes would then be indestructible, because G-rated story.

Her only weakness was that if deprived of oxygen, or utterly exhausted or unconscious, she naturally couldn't sing, and thus was vulnerable again. As soon as she had her powers accurately catalogued, she began experimenting with increasing her "coverage" of invulnerability, hoping to be able to enjoy the singing benefits EVEN in a vacuum.

Eight superheroes in all-- in a world with no internet; but at least there was television to inform them of each other's existence. They still had just over three weeks to get to know each other before Trippenwonk (whom none of them had ever heard of) would arrive. It helped matters that the number of women was equal to the number of men, so nobody could claim that strong women were not represented this time.

Well, almost nobody could claim it. This Earth's closest equivalents of Kathleen Kennedy and Brie Larson tried to make this claim anyway; but because their Earth had never seen Common Core math classes, everybody above age four could count, and everybody knew that four equaled four.

Story-world counterparts of comicbook characters were subject to the Retcon Effect, as surely as the actual comic books were. Aluminum Banshee on Urth was fully human, just enhanced; had become what she was by purely scientific means; was unable to fly; was only 32 years old at the time of her salvation; and had never physically been anything like strong enough to give the Tonkrypian cousins any trouble in a slugfest. By contrast, another version called Bronze Banshee was much more similar to the older comicbook narratives about Silver Banshee. Bronze Banshee was more than fifteen centuries old; had been born in Ireland; had done what amounted to selling her soul to the Devil; had become physically tough enough to laugh off conventional violence; and was decidedly uglier than Aluminum Banshee. Bronze Banshee had retained an attractive body; she was no rotting zombie; but the charm of her body was ruined by her face bearing repulsive dark spots on otherwise dead-white skin.

The Earth where Bronze Banshee lived-- if it could be called living-- was the same one just described as home to versions of She-Hulk and Iron Man. None of the current heroes had ever laid eyes on the female fiend, because great saints of God had repeatedly dealt her setbacks.

This Earth's versions of King Arthur, Ilya Muromets, El Cid, Thomas Aquinas, William Tyndale, John Milton, William Wilberforce, Charles Finney, G.K. Chesterton, Eric Liddell, Peter Marshall, Ravi Zacharias and John Burkitt had successively bound the banshee for periods of five years or longer. At the present time, the she-demon was in the western United States, where she had been imprisoned in a cave by this world's version of Jack Phillips. The latter two men lived respectively in Tennessee and Colorado, and both had been strengthened in faith by dealing with evildoers who lied about them.

Exactly two weeks before Trippenwonk expected to charge through dimensional tunnels from Awkwardlisp to invade this Earth, Bronze Banshee stirred in her tomb. She sensed that new forces of evil were on the way, and she hungered to join them in devastating the world. She felt as if her latest confinement was fading. She tried walking out of the cave, which had been thwarted six times before now. This time, she DID get out into the open air......

Only to be confronted by ANOTHER mighty man of faith. It was this Earth's version of a second Coloradan saint: Rob Rice, a history professor and Renaissance festival entertainer. Undismayed by the hideous being before him, the loquacious professor proclaimed:

"Hideous being before me, you have one more chance to renounce evil! Exactly one more chance to give up worshiping yourself to the injury of everyone else! God will not permit the new heroes of this world to have your supernatural menace hitting them from behind when they have enough peril in front of them. Repent right now, and you can still be saved from eternal punishment!"

Bronze Banshee tried to sound-blast the man, but it didn't work. Suddenly her voice could do no more than speak; so she spoke--maliciously and bitterly. "That's hate speech! If I want to kill thousands of people, that's my own rightful self-actualization. How can I be good for anyone if I'm not good for ME??? And getting revenge on the world is good for me, because I say so! You have your truth, but I have my truth, and you just hate me for being different!"

"You're not helping yourself here," warned the history teacher. "AsaLion, the Almighty God as manifested in some places, is about to make YOU history. This is your very last-est of last chances to ask His forgiveness."

"Ha! What can He do? I have Inexorable Trash on my side. Just let your emanation of Jesus Christ TRY to stop me!"

Next instant, a bolt of lightning fell from a cloudless blue sky, leaving only ashes where Bronze Banshee had stood. "So may it be to evil," said Rob Rice.

< < < < < < < < < < < < < <

In her apartment at the Justified Hall, the NOT-stubborn "Urthian" equivalent of D.C. Comics' Silver Banshee abruptly sat up in bed, yelping, "Holy retribution! I feel as if someone walked over my grave, but then they left flowers on it!"

Four feet away from Lumina, her new friend Ruby was awakened by the outcry. The staff had set up a cot for her in Lumina's bedroom, enabling them to talk further before sleeping. "Lumina, what's the matter?"

Lumina extended an arm in order to clasp Ruby's hand. "If I needed any more proof of parallel worlds, I've just received it. There was a counterpart of me on another Earth. She was much stronger than I am, and more vicious than I ever was on my worst day. But the Creator of all universes erased her! Just think, that could have been my ending too!" She shuddered.

"Move over, allow ME to help YOU calm down. There, you'll be all right. What you saw in your dream was the total reverse of where you are now. You're not under condemnation anymore."

Lumina recovered her smile. "And neither are you, Ruby. Guilt CAN be put behind us."

They both went back to sleep, more hopeful than ever that both of their love-life situations would end happily.

TRIPPENWONK MINUS THIRTEEN DAYS: Stony Stork's metallic super-suit resembled the very first comicbook version of Iron Man in Marvel Comics on Original Earth: like a tank with arms and legs. Though Stony was as inventive as anyone could have asked him to be, his world's overall technology had not achieved the miniaturization capability that would have been required to let him create armor which could disappear and reappear. By the same token, compactness of the power supply could not be as good as a better tech level would have allowed; so Stony would have to recharge or swap out batteries after no more than forty-five minutes of strenuous operation. But relative to what was possible on this Earth, Stony had achieved wonders. And, happily, unlike Tony Stark in the comics, Mister Stork had no cardiac damage threatening to kill him.

The suit could fly, and the repulsor system worked very similarly to early Iron Man comicbooks on Original Earth; but exceeding three hundred miles per hour would severely shorten its battery endurance. It gave him pseudo-muscular strength estimated to equal forty percent of She-Hulk's organic strength. Each metal shoulder mounted a one-shot chaff sprayer, four more were attached on his back, and one was mounted on the instep of each boot; these would make it harder for hostile weapon systems to zero in on him. As for surviving direct hits, the armor could withstand shells from a 30mm cannon. And in anticipation of directed-energy weapons finally coming into frequent use even on this backward Earth, it had excellent reflective qualities against laser fire.

For long-range offensive armament, he would have a 17-inch-long heat-seeking missile attached atop each forearm; they would drop away from him before igniting their engines. Alternately, a 30-caliber machine gun with a fifty-round magazine (armor-piercing bullets) could be mounted on each forearm hardpoint. As a further option, any or all of the chaff-dispenser attachments could instead carry a gas bomb-- to contain only non-lethal subdual gases, as per international treaties against lethal chemical weapons.

Power constraints ruled out Iron Gent's armor carrying any laser worth having (and usable particle beams were still the stuff of science fiction on this Earth). But where sufficient power WAS available, combat lasers were possible. Stork Industries had built a dozen ground-combat vehicles big enough to carry the power supply for a military laser gun, and these also had reflective armor. Both Stony's company, and the United States as a whole, enjoyed good relations with Brazil; so Stony caused six of his existing "Futuretanks" to be shipped to the Brazilian Army, with detailed instruction manuals for their use printed in Portuguese, and consultants from Shark Industries to train up crews.

The reason for this giveaway, which Stony explained to his closest friends in the Defense Department, was because he had another close friend: this Earth's version of the wise man Rob Rice in Colorado. The professor had told Stony about the now-destroyed Bronze Banshee, and about his intuition that the she-devil had intended to side with some terrible evil which was going to attack the world soon. On the strength of this warning, Stony sent three more of the existing Futuretanks to Mexico, and the last three to Canada. Then he ordered rapid production of more Futuretanks, to be used by the United States Army. A certain brigadier general named Rocky Flagstaff was tasked with organizing an armored division, assembled around the new tanks. Its conventional tanks would be supplied with Stony Shark's reflective armor as soon as was feasible.

By now, despite the absence of an internet, Golden Rakshasa, Flying Elephant, Lone Monkey, Iron Gent, She-Hunk, Woman Torch, Unfindable Man and Whiskey Dallas had all opened at least telephone communications with each other, excitedly exchanging questions and answers about their new circumstances.

It helped that the two Hindus could speak English, while Iron Gent could speak Japanese; and as soon as the superheroes revealed themselves, the immediate public interest had ensured that all of them could obtain the help of interpreters as needed. Especially The Exquisite She-Hunk; as soon as it was clear that she would not kill men just for admiring and flattering her, she could get men of every conceivable professional skill trampling on each other to provide any specialized assistance she could think of requesting. She had to go on television to plead with MARRIED men to hold off a bit, even if they had no bad intentions. (Her kindly nature, when she wasn't being the crochety Jasmine Waterford, led her to believe that most married men who did get anywhere near her, even if they did enjoy the sight of her, did not really wish to live with any other women than their wives; and in fact she was right. She simply was thinking about the peace of mind of their wives. )

Each of the eight, especially Golden Rakshasa, had felt an overpowering certainty that their all becoming powerful so close together in time (which in Stony Shark's case meant having his battle armor operational) could not possibly be random chance.

On this day, just under two weeks before Trippenwonk would come (not that anyone on Earth knew the date), Brigadier Flagstaff and Stony Shark put together a satellite-phone conference call with all of the Asian superheroes. Fortunately, all of the American superheroes were able to come to the Pentagon, where they could all participate from the same room. Unfortunately, She-Hunk's very compassion, worrying about the whole human race, distressed her so much that she changed back into Jasmine Waterford; then she sulked and pouted for the whole duration of the conference, refusing to contribute anything.

Male Pentagon personnel still had the pleasure of seeing Golden Rakshasa, Whiskey Dallas and a non-ignited Woman Torch. Female personnel, meanwhile, were glad that Unfindable Man was not making himself invisible.

Planet Punksteema

Captain of Hussars John Telbroc, who had befriended Ronald of Goliad in Malgriff Thanedom, surprisingly accompanied the gunslinger-knight out of Bamulica. They rode northeast, planning to bypass Reslagor because that nation was less than friendly to the Malgriffs. Besides liking Ronald personally, John had the virtue of knowing the language of Hukshem, the country through which they were detouring.

The Loi-Hukshem, as the people here called themselves, looked like Vietnamese people on Original Earth, but their land had a far colder climate than Vietnam. They had no railway lines in their territory, though they did have terminals just within their borders where train passengers from abroad could get off and hire coaches. But they did have telegraph service; and their physicians were so skilled that every adjoining nation, including Bamulica, was glad to hire even Loi-Hukshem medical STUDENTS to work in their hospitals. The Loi-Hukshem were big on herbal and naturopathic treatments, while at the same time practicing excellent sanitation, and using effective anesthetics for surgery. It was rumored that they could even transplant body organ from a fresh cadaver to a living patient; but if this was being done, it was being kept officially secret.

Leaving Malgriff, they crossed Sagrum, the smallest thanedom, without incident. The Sagrums had been friendly to the Malgriffs for the entire history of Bamulica, enjoying the Malgriffs' protection and favorable trade arrangements in return for thanes of Sagrum always voting with Malgriff when a national referendum occurred.

Coming next to the Thanedom of Klistra, which was that part of Bamulica directly bordering Hukshem, Captain Telbroc found himself being questioned by officials of Thane Victor --urgently, but in a friendly way-- about the recent ordeal suffered by Thane Jared. Telbroc was under no orders to conceal any part of this matter, so he explained the whole mess which had been created by the crooked Justiciar Sparrek, incited by the self-exiled Lady Selma. His crediting Ronald's part in setting things right led to Ronald being questioned also; and of course, once the Towerman stated that the Captain's tale was completely true, everyone accepted his word. Thus, the local authorities cheerfully provided assistance for the two men's journey, and they reached the adjacent country without mishaps.

Ronald and John had not been inside Hukshem for half an hour before the Towerman discovered how it was that the Hussar knew the local tongue. Men, women and children, apparently from all social classes, hurried up to offer friendly greetings to Captain Telbroc. Five or six persons amid the welcoming crowds were distinctly taller, and had less-dark hair, than the Loi-Hukshem norms, attesting that there was intermarriage between these people and the neighboring European-like nationalities. The conversations appeared to be partly about Ronald. Eventually, a well-dressed middle-aged lady directly addressed Ronald, revealing that she could speak the commerce-language most used in this nation and in Bamulica. Ronald removed his hat as a gesture of courtesy as soon as she began talking.

"Sir Towerman, you have the goodwill of all honest Loi-Hukshem, because you have rendered aid to the Captain's lord and master. Eight years ago, Thane Jared sent a company of the Malgriff Hussars, together with troops from thanedoms friendly to him, to help us against an outbreak of Bloody Diggers. The Captain, then a sergeant, was among the relieving soldiers." (Ronald knew that "Bloody Diggers" referred to subhuman creatures very similar to Orcs.) "My name is Shenzil Pril. The Captain already knows our family. My husband and our children would be more than honored to lodge you and him in our house tonight."

"The Captain and I are honored to accept your kind invitation. If you will permit us to send a few telegrams first, we will be at your service."
