I remember that one. What goes on in that Nexus? You just hang out living the live you always wished you'd had, forever? I mean ... it doesn't make sense that a healthy Kirk would have just settled down to raise horses with the woman he loved without trying to figure out where he was, why he didn't age, if he could get back to reality ... do you think he thought he was in heaven? Very strange. I hated that he died. :(

I'm finding it amusing and ironic that those of you upset over the misrepresentation of Kirk's character in Generations are the same who see nothing wrong with Abrams' distorted version of Trek (a franchise he's admitted to not even liking).

I agree. But I am finding the irony here a little more than amusing.

I hope in future ST movies by Abrams he rectifies the disruption of the timeline, especially with this whole thing about an old and a young Spock and the destruction of Vulcan. I didn't like those things, especially the destruction of Vulcan.

Yes, it would be interesting to find out what happen to T'Pring, Spock's betrothal from the Amok Time episode. That is another favorite among Star Trek Fans. Maybe T'Pring and Uhura go at it?

How would you react to Star Trek Online then?

I don't really pay attention to the story much, but from what I've been told, the entire game is based around this is the Abrams Trek universe 25 years after Picard's time.

The only point I can really remember is that Romulus is still destroyed and as a result, a new Romulan group has arisen, calling themselves the Romulan Republic.

Their goals are to locate a new homeworld (play as an RR character and you find the new homeworld for them) for the displaced Romulans and Remans, bring those two races together as equals and become a galactic power again, but with the intent of peaceful relations instead of the hostile attitude maintained by their predecessor the Romulan Star Empire.

Mind you, what's left of the Romulan Star Empire and the Tal Shiar don't take kindly to this, since all the Remans and a large number of Romulans are choosing to join the Romulan Republic, diminishing their numbers greatly.
As a result, the remainder of the Romulan Star Empire is in open warfare with the Romulan Republic, trying to conquer them to get all their citizens back.

I don't play video games or RP, so it matters little to me. However, if they're pushing those events as canon....then I have a problem.

Like I've said numerous times, I hate and detest Abrams' version of Trek. It's not just that he's made his own universe; it's that he's done it with such a degree of disrespect for Roddenberry's vision. Not to mention, he has confessed to not even LIKING the franchise he's adding to.

I don't play STO because my laptop doesn't have the hardware to handle the graphics and the speed of the game. I do know that there are a lot of changes to the universe there, but they are not considered canon, at least, no yet.

I don't play online games, so I don't have an opinion on that subject. I will say, I am looking forward to the next Trek movie. I am one of those long-time Trekkies who nevertheless approve of the new time line and new universe introduced in the latest Trek movies. It gives the characters a chance to be re-tooled with all new adventures. We get to keep the same characters -- Kirk, Spock, et al -- but we get to see them in new stories and dramas. The Original Kirk had died in that movie with TNG, that was the end of the line for Kirk movies and stories. But now, thanks to the new time-line, we have all new Kirk with a new lifetime of adventures ahead of him. I like that. It breathed life into ToS characters.

Not to be rude, but Star Trek done purely in Roddenbery's vision would turn out to be a detached Cereberal affair, like the first Pilot and The Motion Picture (and the first two seasons of TNG).

Guess I need to clarify myself instead of being taken so literally. "Roddenberry's vision" would apply to anything pre-2009 as far as the films and shows go (my knowledge of any games and books is limited). Roddenberry had a clear idea of where Trek was going, or at least where he wanted it to go. I'm not sure how else to explain it by making sense.

And I disagree with you. Without Gene we wouldn't have Star Trek at all, and Gene was involved with each Trek project up until his death in 91. Even George Lucas has said that without Star Trek, Star Wars wouldn't have existed. Or wouldn't exist. Whatever the proper grammar is there. I don't think Abrams' version is very respectful to what came before him. Not only does he destroy the characters of Spock and Kirk, along with the people who MADE them who they were originally, he stomps on the things that make Trek great. Namely, he essentially remade Wrath of Khan (yes, I did watch Into Darkness and wanted to puke most of the way through it). There's so many things wrong with the movie I'm not sure I can even name them. 'Course, hollywood is full of remakes because they can't do anything original.

I suppose my main issue, however, is that Abrams claims his movies are an origin story of the Kirk and Co. we all know and love (or dislike, whatever you feel towards Shatner's Kirk). But that isn't true because the essential elements for the original Kirk and Co. are missing in these new incarnations. Don't get me wrong; I want to see origin stories. But I want to see the origins of the characters that Shatner, Nimoy, and the others made famous, not the ones we're given by Abrams.

And don't even get me started on the lens flares. Good gosh almighty, I hope he doesn't stick them in Star Wars. I'll scream if he does.

#1 He was barely involved, He was only the producer of the third season of TOS and after TMP he was forced out of the production of ST:II, and for Star Trek VI the writers "ultimately ignored many of Roddenberry's concerns"

#2 Nicholas Meyer has been quoted as saying ""I would have probably designed a much more claustrophobic world because it's much more dramatic."

#3 Abrams has said he regrets the Lens flare thing, also he actually had to tone some of them down!

Yeah, except that he continues to stick them into each project he is in charge of. I'm pretty sure there were lens flares in Almost Human, the tv show on Fox that he helped create (which has since been cancelled because of poor writing). Regrets are fine, if you forget that regrets mean nothing because you can't re-do the films.

Anyway, I'm working my way back through TOS, and am nearly done with season 2. Last one I watched was The Omega Glory. The end was my favorite part even if the rest of the episode was pretty corny. ;)

I just started watching Star Trek on Netflix, and the pilot episode almost turned me off. The next one was better, though, so I'm going to continue watching.

It`s probably to late already as the way things are too many changes have happened and this has to be a new varient timeline.
So the events of TNG, Voyager and DS9 probably dont happen in the same way, if they happen at all.
That means that the only old Star Trek series that still is sort of canon is ST: Enterprise since that all was supposed to happen before the events in the first Abrams movie.
This allows them to `mine` the original ST series for plot ideas for new movies while making major changes to `improve` them.
I can`t say I like the idea very much.

I actually like it. The previous films and TV series all do exist, in their own timeline. But the new timeline brings fresh life to TOS characters who otherwise really couldn't appear in any more movies, as all their adulthood stories had already been told. Now we get to experience Kirk and friends in all new adventures. I like it.

When you say you just started watching Star Trek, do you mean in general? As in, never watched any episode whatsoever? I would not have recommended to you to start off by watching Original Series. You should start watching The Next Generation.

And Asbel, you put into words my very thoughts. It's a train of thought nobody seems to understand OR respect. Not only this, but it's Abrams' entire argument that this is the beginning of THE Kirk, THE Spock, and THE McCoy that we all know and love. It's not. For it to be a true origin story of the original Kirk and Co., Abrams' entire universe has to be discarded and ignored. It's not the real origin story. When Abrams will cease to claim that this is NOT purely an alternate universe, then I'll stop griping about these films. But so far, he hasn't made that claim and he won't because it earns him money. And he doesn't even like the freaking series. Nobody else seems to understand this fact. A NON Trekkie is in charge of these so-called 'reboots'. Where's the fan anger over this fact? Apparently, it's all directed at Star Wars fans.

If you want REAL Star Trek that's new and ongoing, I highly recommend watching this series on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/user/StarTrekContinues I only watched 20 minutes of episode 2, but man oh man. Talk about spot on continuity. THIS is Star Trek, not Abrams' screwed up version.

Well, when I was younger, I saw the Tribble episode and part of Wrath of Khan. The bug crawling out of Chekov's ear (although I didn't know who Chekov was) freaked me out. A year or two ago, I watched an episode of The Next Generation. I was confused, and only Data appealed to me.

Recently, I watched Into Darkness and went 'Name of Bat-Bat! This is Star Trek?' So, I watched Wrath of Khan, and, intrigued, began to watch the original series. I just watched an episode where Kirk split into his light and dark selves. It's kind of like every episode is the weird season opener or middle episode where everything goes nuts.
