Although it had been a beautiful day earlier, the night was foggy and bleak, and it brought an unnatural chill to the air. Will was in the smithy, pounding and shaping metal blades that were red with heat. He was tired, but he refused to let himself rest. He found the hammering and constant swinging motion of a hammer against metal soothing, in a strange way. He let his mind wander to the swordfight earlier that day. He told himself this was no different than any other day when he practiced swordfighting against an invisible pirate. And the pirate, the infamous Jack Sparrow. The commander today who had taken care of the pirate called him “Captain”, but Will thought he detected a hint of sarcasm in his voice. Captain of what? A ship, of course, but- wasn’t a captain supposed to command a ship that was in the water? What was the pirate doing on the mainland? He threatened Elizabeth, but that was all Will knew. He furrowed his brow subconsciously, wondering why the pirate had done what he had done. He pounded the hot blade with his hammer harder. Elizabeth- he didn’t see her at all after delivering the Commodore’s sword to the Governor. A bead of sweat slid down Will’s forehead. He hastily mopped his forehead with his dirty sleeve. He pounded the blade harder. The sound of the hammer hitting the blade reverberated loudly throughout the small smithy. Will’s thoughts slowed, allowing him to hear himself think. The wind was howling outside. Will stopped pounding for a moment and listened. He put down his tool, and hurriedly opened a small window. The wind had been blowing fiercely for one minute, and then desisted the next. Will recalled something of the like happening that morning. He peered out curiously to see a black cat running up the small street in front of him as it disappeared into the eerie fog that had enveloped the town while it was asleep. Will closed the window, and resumed hammering. Something made him pause again. Something in the air didn’t feel right. He tried to shake it off, but the feeling wouldn’t leave. A sound. It sounded like a small thud. And then a lot of thudding. What was going on? Suddenly, it clicked in Will’s head. Cannon fire! But from where and who? Will laid down his tools, and listened carefully this time. He heard more noises now, and it sounded like explosions and screaming people. The town was being attacked, and Will prayed it wasn’t a greedy band of pirates. Will could hear lots of noise now, and it was coming from right outside. He hurriedly grabbed an ax off a hook on the wall, shoved it into his belt, and grabbed his sword. He yanked open the creaky, wooden door of the smithy, entering into almost a seemingly different world. Thick smoke and frightened screams filled the air. Will had barely gotten the door open, when he saw a filthy pirate with braids in his thick beard run past the doorway, running after a terrified woman clad in a nightgown. Will dashed after the pirate, his heart pounding, as he tightly gripped his ax. He hurled the ax straight into the pirate’s back, stopping him dead in his tracks. The pirate lifted up his hands as he screamed and fell face down on the dirty stone street. Will ran forward, sure the pirate was dead, and snatched the ax out of his back. This was his second time killing someone, he thought, and it wasn’t as sickening as the first. Everywhere Will looked, pirates and almost every man in the town was engaged in a fight. Most, it looked like, were pirates plunging swords into men, firing pistols and revolvers at townsmen short range, and throwing burning hand grenades into houses and buildings. He met swords with a pirate, hitting from above first, and as the pirate raised his sword to hit at Will again, Will quickly maneuvered his sword underneath into the pirate’s flesh. Will heard a huge explosion, and it sounded like it came from inside the fort. He could hear cannons and backfire almost every minute. He glanced away, noticing pirates where beginning to turn their attention away from the people and more toward the items worth value. They were tossing hand bombs into stores after raiding them. Will ran, avoiding the dead and injured that were lying on the streets. A blast, and Will heard the retaliation fire. He wondered how soon it would be until they foraged the smithy if they had not already gotten there. Where was Brown? Will ran towards a pirate who had turned away from stabbing a man in the stomach. The pirate saw Will, and brandished his sword. Their blades met, but the clanging of metal was almost completely drowned out in the noises of explosions and shrieking. Will flipped his sword under the pirate’s, catching him off balance. The shuffled his feet, similar to Jack Sparrow’s style of fighting. Will hit from the left, as the pirate blocked. The pirate swung his sword under, and Will parried, then brought his sword clean into the pirate’s belly. He wondered what happened to Jack Sparrow. Was Jack Sparrow still in Port Royal, in the prison? A loud explosion filled the air. A burly pirate turned upon Will, swinging a three-pronged weapon at Will heavily. Will blocked the blow with his sword with all his might- softening the blow only a little. He was breathing hard and sweaty as he swung his sword at the pirate, who blocked it with his weapon. The pirate knocked Will’s sword out of his hand, and threw the three-pronged weapon around Will’s neck, yanking him towards him so he was inches away from Will’s face. The pirate held an ax close to Will’s head threateningly.
“Say goodbye!” he said roughly.
Will’s breathing grew apprehensive, as his life flashed before his eyes. Explosions again, this time dangerously close, and Will alarmingly looked up. It was in the building right above him and the pirate, causing one of the chains that held a heavy wooden sign to come loose, allowing it to swing down. The pirate looked up, momentarily stunned, and Will grabbed his opportunity to escape from the pirate. As the sign was swinging down, he quickly ducked out of the pirate’s pronged tool, barely getting out of the way of the large sign that came crashing down onto the pirate. The sign knocked the pirate off his feet, knocking him into a window behind them.
Will stared, uneasy, “Goodbye.”
He grabbed his sword, gripped his ax, and turned into the street. But he stopped, startled. Pirates taking a girl with them, as she struggled against them. She turned. Will gasped. It was Elizabeth. Their eyes met, despite the confusing activity going on around them. An explosion went off, momentarily blocking Will from seeing Elizabeth. It cleared away seconds later, and he could see her mouth his name.
“Elizabeth,” he said. Where were they taking her?
He began to run after her when a familiar face appeared in front of him. Hadn’t he seen this face recently? It was the pirate with the braids in his beard! Will paused, confused. Hadn’t he taken this pirate down earlier that night? The pirate waved and smiled wryly, looking down at Will’s feet. Will looked down to see a grenade sitting at his feet, with its fuse lit. Will stepped back hastily. The fuse went out. The pirate stopped grinning, and he looked up at Will with a disturbed look on his face. Will looked back at him. He had escaped death nearly twice tonight! Will began to raise his sword.
“Out of my way, scum!” he heard a rugged voice cry.
Will felt his skull collide with hard metal. His head was automatically numb, and Will fainted dead away. He could feel himself drifting, drifting away into the quietness of uninterrupted, dark sleep…
“Elizabeth!” Will shouted frantically, “Where are you?”
“Will!” came a faint voice, from somewhere that seemed to come from across the oceans.
“Where are you?” asked Will desperately, “I cannot find you!”
He wanted to find her, needed to find her, but he could not. He had traveled throughout the world to find her, but he could not find her. The one thing he wanted the most was Elizabeth. Not Miss Swann, but Elizabeth. He saw himself standing on a beach, looking out over the ocean.
“Will, I’m here!” cried the voice sadly.
“Where? I cannot see you! I have searched the world and still I cannot find you! Where have they taken you?” Will shouted back to the voice.
“They have taken me to the same place where they took your mother,” answered the voice.
“My mother?” Will asked.
“Yes. But your father. You must search for him.” the voice informed him.
“But what of you?” Will asked, swallowing hard.
“Me? Will, I cannot tell you,” said the voice slowly.
“Where? You must tell me!” said Will, breathing laboriously.
“I cannot. I have been forbidden. I cannot tell you where I am,” the voice said sorrowfully.
“But why not?” Will shouted. Sweat dripped down his brow.
“I cannot. We come from two different worlds. How can I tell you to come to me if we are not in the same world?”
Will was silent. Tears came to his eyes. He fell to his knees on the sand despairingly. The one he loved he could not be with.
“Will we ever?” he asked, a sob gathering in his throat.
“Will,” said the voice gently.
“Elizabeth,” he said, touching the ocean water. It felt cool and soft.
“You can choose your fate. What you do might bring us together, or it might not. But you will never know unless you try. It’s up to you…” answered the voice, “It’s up to you…”
