One of C.S. Lewis' VERY FEW faults was an excessive affection for monarchy. The overwhelming majority of monarchs who have ever lived on Earth were no better than murdering bandits. As for the English Civil War, most people don't realize that IT WAS KING CHARLES WHO DECLARED WAR ON HIS OWN PEOPLE, not the other way around. And while Cromwell ruled England, he permitted MORE freedom of dissent than the kings before or after him did.
