The Gone, Away, and Returned Thread II

You may have noticed, you may not, that I was gone for about a week. I went to church camp with my parents' church as a sponsor, and it was AMAZING. God did so much in our own little group of 11 kids (we had 3 salvations!), and honestly did quite a bit in my own heart. I love going to this particular camp; I've been going since I was 5, and so I've grown up with it each year. So I'm back for a while, but as I really need to clamp down on studying for an exam in July and having a job interview next week, I'm not really sure how much I'll be on in the next few weeks!

to all my TDL friends as of July 2nd i will not be on TDL

to all my TDL friends as of July 2nd i will not be on TDL because i will have moved to my new home in Eastern OR, i hope i will have the net so i can pop in on here & say hello if not i'll see if i can use the net at the libiary to come on TDL, God bless each & everyone of you :)

So, I made a prayer thread for this, but for the general forum; I'm leaving tomorrow for Europe (I'll be landing in Madrid, Spain but will also be going to France and Italy). I will be gone for 19 days, with little to no internet access (and sorry, TDL, but if I have 2 minutes on the internet I'm emailing my parents first ;)) so you probably won't see me around after noon tomorrow for about 3 weeks.

Don't throw too many wild parties without me.:p

Sorry for the delay in posting, but I am away at a family reunion till 7/11 on the Washington peninsula.

Re-enters with a mound of laundry from vacation :)
The Pacific Northwest is beautiful... but it's good to get back home too.

I just came back from a very nice trip to Minnesota to see my grandparents. I'll be posting for a while. I have Comic-Con tomorrow, and the rest of the weekend, so updates from that are sure to come.

Yo, Span-Inq! Just today, I used an Atticus Finch reference in an essay!

Why is the rule of law vital?

In the United States, we have grown accustomed to speaking simplistically about the will of the people. To be sure, given a stark either-or, I would always rather have power diffused among many people than monopolized by a single ruler, because then it is more difficult for this power to be used to oppress whole populations.

I said "more difficult;" I did not say "impossible." If enough stupidity or group arrogance develops among the citizens of a nation, the majority of them can quite handily oppress anyone who ISN'T conforming to the crowd. For selfishness and irrationality still ARE selfishness and irrationality, whether everyone is free to act on them, or only a monarch and his henchmen are free to act on them. But the rule of law -- provided that you HAVE laws in the first place which address everyone's rights -- is a defensive weapon which can swivel either way as needed.

The rule of law can be Robin Hood, refusing to let Prince John rob the people at will. The rule of law can also be Atticus Finch in "To Kill A Mockingbird," telling an emotion-crazed mob, "No matter how many of you WANT to believe that my client is guilty, that does not MAKE him guilty."

It is not merely power that corrupts leaders. They are corrupted when power is accompanied by IMMUNITY TO CONSEQUENCES when they ABUSE their authority. Even an amoral, mercenary politician will have to curb his crooked actions if he KNOWS that he WILL be required to answer to the law for what he does, and he CAN'T lie or scheme his way out of it.
