The Latest Amazing Grace Through Faith with a Place in Space For a Saved Ex-Traitor

This new story, taking place in the Fifth Galaxy (=Gamma Sateri), has a mostly new cast of characters. The very few already-existing characters appearing here are used in such a way as not to contradict already- existent storylines. It bears mentioning that they have been allowed an extremely rare visit to the space-time boundaries of Actual Earth, by way of my story "The Swans Beside the Submarine," a segment embedded within "Spacebullies." Notably, "Not-So-Bad-Bunny" (derived from the obscure "Bad Bunny" comic strip) has interacted with my regular Spacebullies characters. "Tweepikip" comes from a WAY-long-ago Dungeons and Dragons campaign. He's supposed to be a great-nephew of Reepicheep.

My well-established avian character Flakefeather is involved here, but has MANY plates now spinning. Refer especially to the almost-equally-new story "Hi-Yo Feathers! The Lone Bluejay Flies Again!"

CHAPTER ONE:

Sorcery Lass, the Heather Thomas look-alike who spent most of her time in her place of power at Castle Greyhair on Planet Alwaysurnia (as a mentor to Mighty Male), always kept current on events all across the Milky Way Galaxy and elsewhere. Her contacts ranged from President Jackman Hughes of Heyho Earth, to Equivvalentor the Dragon of Reasonableness, to the personnel of Bubblewrap Five, to native authorities on Redundantworld in the Triangulum Galaxy.

As we open, the faithful soldier Weapons-Man checks in with his kingdom's revered advisor.

W.M.-- Lady Lass, are you familiar with a galaxy called Gamma Sateri?

S.L.-- Only so far as plain science catalogues it. You already know that there are billions of galaxies in the creation. Is there something in Gamma Sateri particularly which needs my attention?

W.M.-- There is. Not merely a new situation, but a new KIND of situation. You know of the Narnian sub-universe; you know that plenty of people on Primary Earth are inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia, and that the Almighty is pleased to see them deriving inspiration from that series.

S.L.-- All right, gallant sir, kindly get to the point.

W.M.-- As you wish. In sequential time, the Narnian pseudo-planet collapsed generations ago. But time is fluid. I believe you remember the good wizard Hector von Bootblack?

S.L.-- (nods)

W.M.-- He contacted me through Equivvalentor. Powers of good are preoccupied with worlds of the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy; plenty of work for the side of light. But there IS a terrestroid planet in Gamma Sateri. And, for the first time Hector knows of, a sub-reality is emerging in which there's a White Witch who HASN'T EVEN BECOME an evil witch.

S.L.-- You mean, a potential villainess who could be PREVENTED FROM turning bad?

W.M.-- Got it in one. The fact that you LOOK LIKE Jordash (that's the name of the Jadis-variant) is a sufficient clue to your being the best provider of supernatural preventive medicine.

Thus it befell that Sorcery Lass rounded up appropriate comrades for this mission, the same ones listed in the introduction. Hector's message really did offer a worthwhile challenge: not merely to defeat evil, but to get ahead of evil. Through Hector, she got in touch with the Janitors of the Universe. With scores of super-beings to call on, the Janitors lined up Captain Rightawrong to transport the four-person posse to Planet Churn.

While casually playing with his magic-charged locking-blade knife, Not-So-Bad Bunny sniffed the air. "Well, the %\* 9 =}/+ 4 v !!! air doesn't stink like it would now if somebody said a Deplorable Word. Hey, see anything up there, Flaky?"

Flakefeather the Talking Bluejay descended to perch on the shoulder of swordsmouse Tweepikip.

"Lots of greenery, for sure. If that word is as deplorable as Our Lord Aslan told us, it should kill off EVEN the vegetation."

Sorcery Lass nodded. "Then a falling-dominoes effect: no green plants, meaning eventually no oxygen. Very well, reconnaissance next. I can make us all invisible. Since we won't be able to see each other, we'll pick a rally point, so that--"

Right then, dozens of living, breathing people emerged casually from doors and alleys.

"All right, we'll have to assume they saw us. Flakefeather, it won't matter if they DO see you. Go ahead and scout for--well, someone who looks like me. Bunny, Tweepikip, put up your blades; I can block attacks magically if necessary."

"Um, can you likewise understand their lingo?"

Tweepikip snorted. "Do you suppose that Aslan would not make us able? Or make THEM understand us? His not being a tame lion does not mean that He would play childish pranks on us."

Flakefeather took off, unnoticed as expected. The townspeople drew closer.... then suddenly knelt, saying, "Jordash, Jordash." They think I'm she, Sorcery Lass realized; but they're not afraid of me. Which means that we're not too late to prevent the corruption.

She made her voice casual. "Rise, all of you; I mean you no harm, but I must correct a misunderstanding. I am not myself Queen Jordash; by coincidence, I look like her. If she is here in her capital. I must confer with her."

One of the older townswomen, holding the hand of a little grandson, walked closer before whispering: "I hope that the God-Lion has His eye on you. Not Jordash, but her scheming sister Princess Brosimya, is in this town. Jordash is at the western extremity of this continent, seeking to quell the worries of the common folk before things fall apart--"

"--and the center cannot hold," Sorcery Lass finished, then looked up. "Flakefeather, the plan is changing. Come down, and remain among these good people. Tweepikip of Anglosaxophonia, comrade of Gene Wildest, nephew of Reepicheep, and Not-So-Bad Bunny from distant Forgeworld, we three shall teleport away before Brosimya compels me to use force against her. We shall hasten to where Jordash is working to put out brushfires, and offer our assistance."

And wheeee-away they flew.

Flakefeather perched on the shoulder of the largest man present. "Good son of Adam--if only by several distant removes-- I am no harpy eagle, but I've seen battles. Kindly introduce me to whoever keeps the peace hereabouts, and I will discuss with him how best the impending trouble may be contained." .

The man blinked. "I never saw a blue parrot with a short beak!"

Flakefeather patted the man's shoulder with a wingtip. "I'm not a parrot echoing back a human's words. Hmmm, dibba-dibba-dibba-dubbi-dub, let's see. I'll recite a poem."

The man sat on a bench. "Go ahead, recite. More comfortable for me if I'm seated and not twisting my head to the left. By the way, my name is Parbitan."

Flakefeather obligingly perched on Parbitan's knee.

"Hnn, hah, I'm new here, so I'm kind of curious. Do people hereabouts believe in other worlds?"

"We're sure there ARE such worlds, but we don't know where they are, or if anyone in Churn can get to them. Only Queen Jordash believes it can be done...." Parbitan stopped, looked behind him, and resumed with a hushed voice. "Brosimya, may her hair-coloring run into her eyes, is already using the Queen's interest in outer space to cast doubt on her fitness to retain the throne."

The Bluejay glanced around for himself before saying more.

"You seem like a man stable enough to be let in on the reason why I've come to Churn. Others came here with me. Only one is human, and she happens to LOOK LIKE your monarch. Two other sapient creatures came here with me: both mammals, and both competent to carry blades. They're with Sorcery Lass-- that's what she calls herself-- and are also intent on protecting Jordash from a palace revolution."

Parbitan stood back up. "Then I'll take my chances. We'll head for a tavern where my friends often meet."

The Soup Ladle was an unobtrusive but well-maintained eating-and-drinking establishment. The daily lunch specials ensured that working people could wrap themselves around a sustaining meal without spending more than three coppers. Garfilka the counter lady, well known for trying to keep the customer satisfied, was first to notice Parbitan entering.

"Well, koo koo kachoo, Mister Parbitan! Did you finally buy a parakeet over in Spardanny Fair?"

"No, just a bit of paprika, sage, rose petals and turmeric."

(No sense putting it off, the Bluejay decided.) "I expect I might be remembered by someone who lives there, if I get a chance. Yes, I can talk. But no luck finding a true love there or anyplace just now."

A woman seated over her own daily special turned to face the new arrivals. "Hey, Parbitan, your cambric shirt's almost ready. The needlework was a killer, but I finally got the seams right."

"Thanks, Mistress Bobbinson. The Creator loves you more than you probably know. Your tailoring work is so good, I expect you'll soon be able to afford that acre of seaside land you've had your eye on."

Mister Bobbinson sighed. "That's IF Princess Brosimya doesn't succeed in stealing the throne out from under dear Jordash." At this, everyone sincerely toasted the rightful Queen.

One man had been inconspicuously watching the street. Turning back, he hissed at Parbutan and Flakefeather: "Hey, old friends, it's time to bookend this conversation! Do I have to be your bodyguard? If a deputy sheriff asks what you came here for, you won't have time to pack your bags and flee."

Garfilka nodded. "Parbitan, Bluejay, come with me. In case a deputy actually DOES barge in, you others can signal us by saying audibly that we're seeing what the boys in the backroom will have."

Mister Bobbinson replied, "And I'll acknowledge by saying loudly that I'll have the same."

As plotline convenience will have it, no serious crises occurred at the time. The scene is now transported to wherever Sorcery Lass, Tweepkip and Not-So-Bad Bunny are........

"Goodbye to you, Princess Brosimya, you can't overthrow our Queen Jordash; you'll be trashed.
Quit while you can, Princess Brosimya; but it looks like you'll just never learn: you can't have Churn, you can't have Churn......."

A steadily growing supportive crowd surrounded Sorcery Lass; she and her mammal comrades had to explain to them that she was merely a look-alike. This led to the resident non-evil from Castle Greyhair having to admit that the similarity was relevant; "My virtuous paladin, Sir Dickon Docker, was convinced that my resemblance to Jordash would gain a hearing, once I made it clear that my conspicuously looking like her WASN'T a find-the-impostor shell game."

"Slow down, you move too fast; we got to stick with Queen Jordash.
We're pickin' up some cobblestones, in case Brosimya's feelin' moody....."

With reinforcements arriving for Jordash as expected, some of the locals had improvised a cheerful song, which in turn attracted more attention from all sides. This included some bizarre harpers who had been looking for fun on the Fifty-Ninth Street Bridge. They were dappled and drowsy; but not quite ready to sleep. Loyal Churnians, Charnese, Shorniots, whatever.

The singing brought Flakefeather back, no longer in a blue mood, and further brainstorming proceeded.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch dressing bottling stand, Brosimya was tasting some of the nectar and ambrosia being sold by a lady named Honey Bean. Soon the wicked princess remarked, "This taste of honey is a taste much sweeter than wine."

"Thank you for saying so, Your Grace, I mean Your Ladyship, I mean Your Majesty, I mean Your IMPERIAL Majesty." Honey lowered her voice. "Whatever happens, I'm for the winner-- that is to say, I'm for the WINTER that you reckon on producing. If it's always winter but never Winter Solstice, you can starve disobedient people."

The royal traitor nodded. "Of course, I won't let it snow literally forever; even usur-- I mean liberators, have to eat. But I'll control where crops can be grown, by whom, and how much of each type will be planted. Hmmm, probably on collective farms; then I can starve anyone who pretends that their brats deserve to have more than the daily ration."

"You could even concoct a story about a boy who loves Big Sister so much as to inform on his parents if they're SO selfish as to withhold a few bowls of cereal........"

By the time Queen Jordash, led by Flakefeather, arrived upon the scene where Sorcery Lass awaited her, she had had a lightbulb-over-the-head moment, and resolved to employ ACTUAL parrots, who could relay royal messages to stewards, mayors, dukes of earl and the like.

When she came face to face with the Sorcery Lass of Castle Greyhair, there was hugging and kissing on both sides; but they were in an Alternate Narniaverse, where no one thinks worse of you for that. Presently, Tweepikip called the moot to order.

Later on, when Sorcery Lass and company return safely to Castle Greyhair, King Mighty Male will introduce them to Queen Teerifica. When Dickon Docker wonders whom Queen Jordash will take as her consort, Teerifica replies, "Aslan would call that someone else's story." Then Battery-Cat looks at Sorcery Lass and interjects: "As for that, it's high time that YOUR story led you and Weapons-Man to an altar."

Taking the cue, Sorcery Lass deluges Dickon with hugs and kisses. When they come up for air, she assures him: "I don't expect you to kneel; that's degrading. You kneel to no one."

Cue the unseen orchestra to perform Howard Shore's majestic happy-ending theme.
