The Witch / Was Tilda Swinton good?

I LOVE the witch!!! But I HATE how Tilda Swinton played her in the movie. Great movie but Tilda Swinton just ruinedddd it. She is not fit to play Jadis.

Was Tilda Swinton fit to be the witch?

I finally got round to watching the movie of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and I am now throughly annoyed at Tilda Swinton. Who cast her??!!? She wasn't scary, powerful or anything like Jadis. She acted like a wally. Does anyone agree she doesn't do the Queen of Narnia justice?

 She was waaaayyy perfect...I don't see the problem??!! She seemed powerful especially in the battle seen and she was scary...If you've seen it only one time then you would better see it again.

I changed the title of this thread to something more open ended. We have to be a little respectful of the people that work to bring us these movies. As you can see, there is more than one opinion here.

ive seen the BBC version more times than i can count and ive seen the movie twice now. tilda swinton is no match for barbara kellerman.

She is defently fit to play Jadis and just because she does not yell all the time in the BBC version dosn`t make her so she is not fit to play Jadis. I think her hard and cold stare and her good acting was enough for me. I loved Jadis or should I say Tilda!

I don`t know about that. There are alot here who was disagree with you about Tilda Swinton. I have watched the Dinsey narnia movie over 15 times and I believe she was simply wonderful.

The White Witch

Thanks EveningStar for changing the name. This will make this much more open for people to talk about what they REALLY think of Tilda.

I don't like the White Witch, and from what I have read of her, I don't care much for Tilda Swinton, either. In that sense, she was perfect for the part. (They point out in the comments that Tilda became a pretty good swordswoman by the time the film was finished Hmmm.......)

I agree with the comments here though, that the witch wasn't sinister or diabolical enough. Yes, she also needed to be deceptively kind at times. But, she was the epitamy of evil, especially based on her behavior in MN.

Every story needs a wicked witch. I love evil, kick butt women, so that's why I love her. And since Tilda Swinton is known for playing deceptive characters, especially in Constantine as the wicked angel, she was perfect for the role. Her unusual beauty and elegance lent the character even more realism. I can't imagine anyone not liking Tilda Swinton. I can't stand actresses that fall into the trap of picking stupid roles just so they can become famous...she has always chosen alternative roles for her career, and I admire that. But now, with her having played the White Witch and the movie's enormous success, she's pretty much established herself as one of the more interesting Hollywood actresses of her genre.

I don't think she needed to be more diabolical or wicked at all. What more evil can she could have done than by making Narnia a hundred year winter, having all the creatures live in fear of her, having great powers of evil magic, and having the cruelty to kill Aslan on the Stone Table? Not to mention her deception of Edmund and her personality's evil quirks. She was much wilder in the Magician's Nephew, and that's where you see how she and Uncle Andrew were not so far apart in their personality...they both believed they could do whatever they wanted ( him with the rings, her with the deplorable word)...they believed themselves to be ABOVE all other people, and therefore, their own morals ( or lack of) stood apart as well.

I haven't seen the BBC versions yet. But hey, this is all a matter of a person's opinion, and there is no right or wrong opinion, just a difference in them. I personally really thought Tilda was fantastic in the role of the WW, but I'd also like to see Barbara Kellerman's portrayal and see which one I like better. In some ways, when you read the Magician's Nephew, the White Witch was this really wild woman...she seems to have calmed down in the LWW story. One thing I can't picture Tilda Swinton as, probably because I haven't seen her act in such a manner....is totally wild and out there. On the other hand if you see the extras on the Narnia DVD, she is pretty funny.

Strangely, when I read the Magician's Nephew first, I got the impression of the White Witch as this really curvy, red-haired woman...someone totally outrageous and crazy...remember how she whips those horses, steals the jewelry, and causes havoc in London? She must have transformed through the years to become the icy queen was in LWW>

I thought that, as well! HI FIVE :D
And I had already seen the 2006 LWW, so I had already established that image of Jadis.
But, I have to sort of agree with some of the comments about Tilda not being..evil enough? It wasn't really her, in my opinion. She's one of the best actors I've ever seen! The problem; The script. Don't get me wrong, I LURRRRRRRRRRRV the movie..but, JAdis should have had more powerful...mm, words? I dunno..I'm not saying she should have been cursing and all that crap, but. at least threatening ways of saying things..it's hard to explain. But Tilda = *thuumbs up*
Tilda is wonderful, and I only hope that she is there to act like the crazy, righteous (in my opinion) witch in the Magician's Nephew! :D
