Sometimes it's because you need a place to start so that the situation can improve over the course of the novel. A story beginning and ending with the characters in the same place isn't great.
 
I disagree. There's something to be said for a realistic story.
I missed this response before. What I am curious about is this... what is unrealistic about a story starting out with a character in a place that isn't as good as they are when the story ends?
