When I was writing my M.A. thesis, I didn't know how to type. So someone offered to type my thesis for free (125 pages) if I would illustrate the textbook she was writing. Her book did eventually get published but the final version was illustrated by photos not my drawings (editorial decision).

I don't do that with fan fics, but I do often do that with books. I come up with "parallel characters," put them into the story, and retell it to myself, changing and adding plot elements as I go.

If you leave me alone in a room long enough, I will inevitably start telling myself a story...out loud.
