actually, BK it wasn't our fault. when Spain colonized the Philippines they saw to it that the
indios (that was what they called the natives) did not learn the language because they were afraid that there would be uprisings and that the natives would oust the government.
because of this, only the
illustrados (rich Filipinos who had the opportunity to study abroad) were able to learn the language, such as Jose Rizal and others.
and no, as of now, we do not have any grudge against Spain. Years ago, my parents had to learn Spanish. it was a requirement in college. my grandfather can speak little Spanish, but it never worked for the whole nation. there are a few ethnic groups whose dialect is very close to Spanish. they are what we call the Chavacanos. in fact, my local dialect has many Spanish terms.
why English.. because the opposite happened. when the Americans came to the Philippines they taught us the language. they taught us how to read "This is Pepe, this is Pilar". this was the basic
you know, sometimes i wish i know how to speak Spanish. i would love to learn it. the subject is still offered in our universities, esp. in state universities where i go to college.. but it's only good for a year. and only strictly required for political science majors (at least in my school).
becuase i love languages, i would also love to learn tagalong.
my sister knows one phrase lol
its was funny when my mom worked at the hospital we helped out with the philipino associtation parties in our town and we were the least philipino looking by far of the whole gange.
