Welcome to the Philippines

So what do you all think about the human trafficking problem in the Philippines and what is your country doing to stop it?
I have no idea though, Never heard of it. There was a story about it though! It's sad that some countries accept them though instead of helping!
I used to have several Filipino pen pals and they were some of the nicest people I've ever known.:D
Thanks! We're really nice people deep inside. :D

Hehehe...seriously, though, they were really cool people. It was really funny when one of my girlfriend's brother sent me a pic along with her letter to me, and on the back of his pic it said, "Don't worry, Jeanine, I'll marry you yet!":eek: He was cute too, but oh well.:D

Aww!! That's so sweet! :D *LOL*

Yea, it's something that makes me smile when I think back on it. :p

I'll bet it's so lovely there; I have a Sri Lankan lady friend at work and she talks about all the exotic fruits and such.....*drool*:D

It is rather lovely if you're a tourist, but once you've experienced living here for your whole life, You might get a different perspective of it. Sometimes it's good sometimes it isn't, I'm afraid.

Kumusta everybody! I didn't know there were so many filipinos on here. I'm half filipino and really proud of my pilipino roots :D I don't speak tagalog, but I'm trying to learn.

Haha! There aren't a lot, we're a fine batch. :p I'm not full filipino either, since I have trails of Spanish and chinese blood (more of spanish!). Glad you're learning! I don't really want to learn it really, even though it's being taught here. :p

Well, actually the linguists say we have sixty to eighty different languages (the number varies per report), of which there are many more subdialects.

English and Tagalog are the official languages, while the major languages include Tagalog, Ilocano, Bisaya, Bicol, Waray, Ilongo, etc.

What they call dialects are Batangueño, Tagalog Quezon, Tagalog Laguna, etc.

Hehe. Just thought I'd clarify. :-D

Also, the Philippines has its own community of CS Lewis enthusiasts! see http://www.filipinonarnians.org :-D it's mostly active in live monthly meetings and as a mailing list, though, rather than the "tukador" forum.

Hehe. Sorta good... less competition with NarniaFans, eh?

(woooohhooooo.... still feeling the LionCon buzz...)

Sorry if this question was already asked.

It the Philippines has more Spanish history, and you guys have more Spanish blood and surnames, why is it that you don't speak more Spanish or at all?

becuase i love languages, i would also love to learn tagalong.

my sister knows one phrase lol

its was funny when my mom worked at the hospital we helped out with the philipino associtation parties in our town and we were the least philipino looking by far of the whole gange.;)

I asked my mom about that. She said she did learn some Spanish in school. And some Spanish is mixed into the Tagalog language. A lot of times, when we're watching the TV show I Love Lucy, when Ricky Ricardo (a Cuban) would speak in Spanish my mom is able to translate some of it. Not really a word-for-word translation, more of a "he's saying this" type translation. :p

But why not MORE Spanish. Why make the English language official and not Spanish? Did Philippinos have a grudge against Spain? I mean, I'm not accusing, I just want to know.

actually, BK it wasn't our fault. when Spain colonized the Philippines they saw to it that the indios (that was what they called the natives) did not learn the language because they were afraid that there would be uprisings and that the natives would oust the government.

because of this, only the illustrados (rich Filipinos who had the opportunity to study abroad) were able to learn the language, such as Jose Rizal and others.

and no, as of now, we do not have any grudge against Spain. Years ago, my parents had to learn Spanish. it was a requirement in college. my grandfather can speak little Spanish, but it never worked for the whole nation. there are a few ethnic groups whose dialect is very close to Spanish. they are what we call the Chavacanos. in fact, my local dialect has many Spanish terms.

why English.. because the opposite happened. when the Americans came to the Philippines they taught us the language. they taught us how to read "This is Pepe, this is Pilar". this was the basic :p

you know, sometimes i wish i know how to speak Spanish. i would love to learn it. the subject is still offered in our universities, esp. in state universities where i go to college.. but it's only good for a year. and only strictly required for political science majors (at least in my school). :)

Thanks Rem. That makes a lot of sense I now I know more about the history of "Las Islas Filipinas":p
Did the Spaniards stole all your gold like the Conquistadores did in Latin America? I think it's about time they give it all back! (JK).

I know the word "Chavacanos" by the way but I haven't heard it since I was little. I'll have to ask my mom what the word means.
