What makes sci-fi sci-fi?

Daydream Believer, if you want to further your acquaintance with sci-fi, I urge you to find and watch some older films that were made before we had CGI effects to fill the screen. Some of the good older movies are "Twenty Million Miles to Earth," "Destination Moon," "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," "Around the World Under the Sea," "Journey to the Seventh Planet," the intelligent sci-fi horror story "THEM!", and my special favorite, "Robinson Crusoe on Mars."

For older sci-fi stuff I like ClassiC Doctor Who. No CGI at all. That only comes in with New Who. First Doctor had really awsome plotlines.

The early Doctor Who episodes were often like stage plays. You learned simply to accept it when a character said, "My spaceship is just past that hill," and you never saw the ship even at rest, let alone in flight.

First episode was really really really boring. After that it got good. The Romans is a really good episode. Ian and Barbra get sold into slavery. But they manage to get out.

Is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea sci-fi? I guess it was some of the earliest sci-fi. I LOVE that movie! My last name used to the same as one of the main characters ... before I got married.

I love the book, too, and also Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Yes, being written at a time when submarines had not yet become reliable, much less capable of operating independently at sea for years, it was a science fiction book.

I made a sci-fi banner! :D Stargate, Firefly, and Doctor Who. In that order.

And there's my awsome Mal/Kaylee one.
Mei-Mei means sister in Chinese.

Very nice banner! I am not familiar with any of the programs, though ...

So the difference in sci-fi and fantasy is that there is no magic in sci-fi, just technology? So where does Star Wars fit in? It has technology, but also magic.

Sci-fi Fantesy. So both.

Sci-fi is fictional science, not real science. If everything in sci-fi movies really worked, we'd be doing it.

The science works in that movie or book because it's only fictional science, not real science.

That's why it's called science fiction, not sceicne reality.

But in straight sci-fi, they don't have magic, right? They have (fictional) technology to accomplish all the cool stuff they do.

I've seen "Twenty Thousand Leages Under the Sea",but never realized it was sci-fi...:o
Oh,and I've also seen "Invasion of the Body Snatchers","The Day The Earth Stood Still",and "War of the Worlds"(all the 50s version). And the 60s TV show the Twilight Zone, and the 80s Doctor Who.
But I don't watch any modern sci-fi......

Five is really awsome. So is Seven. Six was so horrible he got cancled. XD (talking Doctor Who here)

I've never seen any doctor but #5,but I really liked him, because of his joking..oh,and the celery is pretty funny too.:pI liked Nyssa a lot,and Teagan and Peri were fine.:)
What was wrong with #6?:confused:I didn't see him except in the last second of the episode where #5 turned into him..It was kinda sad...:(

He was horrible. Idiots, self centered, and just horrible. About 1 in a 10000000000000000000000000 like him. He was so bad that he got cancled. He did quit, he got canceled.

Oh BTW almost all the Doctors are funny and just joking around with stuff. One, Two, Four, Five, and Seven are the silliest. Three and Nine are more serious. Eight is out of character. And in my opinion Ten is out of character.

OH..got it...okay...I didn't know that the doctor's personality changed when he switched bodies.:o

 I'll have to look for some others. All the library had was episodes of #5,so I haven't gotten to see a lot of DW in general, yet.:)
