I favor Gimli because he carries himself well as an "odd man out." He's surrounded by people who _assume_ the superiority of Elves, but he never quits pulling his share of the load. And his chivalrous courtly adoration of Galadriel (better expressed in the book), _without_ any crude immoral element, is a noble example to counteract the dirty-minded entertainment of today.

Good points, CF. I especially love Gimli's adoration of Galadriel in the books. It's so sweet. :)

Thank you, Jax. I believe I can say for myself that in my lifetime, I have like Gimli succeeded in highly admiring some women who were not "available" to me, and admiring them without a desire to commit any sin.

As a matter of fact: my Janalee was at one time unavailable to me, and at that time I thought very highly of her without any evil desire--and having NO idea that one day she WOULD be lawfully available to me and would be my second wife.

Welcome, Ariana. I don't remember seeing you post before. Yah, I voted for Legolas, too.

CF, considering JRRT's Cahotlic background, don't you think Gimli's adoration of Galadriel is something like a person consecrated to the BVM? That's how it seems to me ... he loves her, but not with any carnal element to it.

(Not to deny what you've said; I know there are men who are capable of courtly love and also simply of love and admiration without any physical designs at all.)

SingingDryad, yes he certainly did work hard for the role :)

Copperfox, you are most definitely right about Gimli's noble adoration of Galadriel. I loved that in the book. And, even though she's an elf (how did you word it? "assumed superiority"), he's very humbled when he sees her, because he believed her to be a witch. It's so sweet :)

I love how the three are best friends, but Gimli and Legolas (and elf and a dwarf!) are special friends. It's so cool to see them actually care about each other.

But Legolas is still my favorite.

Same here. I voted for Aragorn, but Faramir is AWESOME. Faramir, Eowyn, and Pippin are probably my top three favorite book characters ever!

Book Faramir, Film Faramir, or both? In the book I like him very much. They did him a disservice in the film.

It's cool. I like book Faramir, and I like the romance with Eowyn. And I liked the actor who played Faramir in the film; he did a great job -- they just didn't write his part correctly. :(

I completely understand Eowyn ... she falls in love with a dream of a hero, and then has a difficult time recognizing her real hero when he arrives. She's a strong, bold woman who thinks she needs more than a hearth and home but discovers that under the right circumstances, those things are perfect for a shield-maiden of Rohan. :)
