Hey, that's cool! When I go to France I'll definitely look up that castle, looks awesome!

It was built in Roman times, and the 12th and 13th centuries. There used to be 36 Roman towers around it but most were torn down and so now there are only a few left (I have pictures of one :D). The fortress was nearly impregnable as it had several gates with holes at the top of them where those inside could rain arrows and stones down on attackers. The walls are not actually that thick though, 2-4 meters, depending on the wall (there are two outer walls and one that surrounds Nottingham Castle, which I was not allowed to enter, but got some pictures of from the outside). Attack from inside the city was more likely than from outside, because the peasants would rebel. In these times wooden defenses were put up around the wall surrounding Nottingham Castle (that's not actually what its called, by the way, that's just what I know it as :p) from which soldiers could fire arrows down at the peasants. Arrow slits are set into the wall, from which archers could fire down upon any sort of invaders. The view from the outermost wall of the modern city is magnificent, and would make it hard to sneak up on the castle. When times were hard, Carcassone was used as a quarry (as was the Coliseum, but that's a different story altogether).
Currently, around 60 people live full time in Carcassone, running little shops, restaurants and such. The modern city below the castle of Carcassone is much more boring, in my opinion.:p

And, as I told my friend today, "I am your history book." xD
