Fox has revealed plans today to continue ramping up the number of 3D films that they release. This year, they are releasing two films in 3D: Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Avatar. Fox Filmed Entertainment chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos announced, at ShoWest today, that they plan on releasing three films in 3D in 2010.
What he didn’t mention are the names of those three films. In 2010, they have a few films that would make great potential 3D releases, that we know of. One of those is the remake of Fantastic Voyage, which is about a scientist with a potentially fatal health problem takes a risk on his only chance of survival: for five of his colleagues to be miniaturized in a ship and injected into his bloodstream.
The other film on the list of 2010 releases includes The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Does that mean we have the potential to see a Narnia film in 3D? Definitely!
What I hope, though, is that they do the 3D film without relying on the gimmicks that usually come with a 3D film. Although, with the new wave of 3D movies that have come out lately, those gimmicks seem to only happen in movies that were meant to be 3D from the start. 3D films are beginning to use 3D as an advantage, bringing people into the environment of the movie and immersing the viewer in the world presented, instead of intentionally throwing things toward the camera.
Another thing about 3D movies that a lot of people still don’t realize is that the technology is now advanced, and using the red and blue lenses is a thing of the past. They now use polarized lenses that make the 3D happen.
What do you think? Would you like to see Dawn Treader in 3D?
I’m not 100% for or against it. I recently saw Coraline in 3D and was mostly annoyed by it. It seemed like less than half the film was actually 3D. Most was just very blurry. Also, my skin would reflect up into the glasses which was also very annoying. lol. If they release it in 3D, like Coraline, I will be looking forward to the 2D version to be released, but I will still see the 3D version.
Well said, Anthony- I, too, saw Coraline in 3D. In fact, in many films my eyes get tired of the 3D about halfway through. I am guessing that too much 3D is bad for your eyes, as we naturally begin to adjust to new situations… Lord of the Rings in 3D would be too much, but Dawn Treader I could take. Especially if it wasn’t the entire film… although, with Harry Potter, making a scene or two in 3D kind of takes you out of the experience…. then you’re looking for the 3D instead of letting the 3D look for you.
I thought Coraline was one of the best of the new lot of 3D films. The 3D was subtle and added much to the mystery and intrigue of it.
The 3D critics crack me up. If there is a lot of stuff off the screen the critics scream it is just a gimmick. If the 3D is subtle and doesn’t rely on throwing something at the audience the critics complain it didn’t take advantage of 3D.
I don’t care for chick flick romantic comedies but I appreciate they have their audience so I don’t go on websites and rant and rave about how awful they are. I just wish that people who don’t care about 3D would do us fans of 3D the same courtesy and let us enjoy them for what they are without their endless complaints.
Oh, I’d enjoy it!
Narnia deserves to be a story to be lived in, not just seen. 🙂
I wouldn’t be looking forward to it. Doesn’t it cost extra? And it’s my opinion that it takes away from the movie, because instead of enjoying it you’re trying to look for the 3D. No, if that really happened I would be seeing the 2D version.
Phil Grey said just what I would say. The 3d is too much or the 3d is not enough. I’ve seen the same critics of 3d say both of the things in different articles. Just plain silly. This bed is too hard. This bed is too soft. Anyway, how many 2d films have we had in the last 60 years percentage wise. I would say that answer is 99.9 %. Now we have some 3d films come out that are also released in 2d as well and the people that hate 3d go to the 3d and complain about it. Why? Just go to your little 2d film and don’t complain about the 3d films that some of the rest of us have been waiting for decades to enjoy. You all get to pay 2 or 3 dollars less for you favorite format so you all have it made.
I have never enjoyed 3D movies, however I would watch Dawn Treader in 3D. When I saw “Journey to the Center of the Earth” in 2D, I found it a little over bearing how things just “happened” to be thrown toward the camera (i.e. the flashlight). I would be ok with 3D, but I would be just as ok without it…
3D would be okay with me. Journey to the Center of the Earth was good. I enjoyed it. Dawn Treader would be good no matter if it’s 3D or regular. The story is one of the best fantasies of all time. 3D is okay with me
I love 3D movies, but with a family of 5, they cost us an extra $17.50 for the 3D premium, making them too expensive to go see, and while we could watch them in 2D, 3D movies tend to be filmed with 3D in mind and are really intended to be watched that way, so I want to watch it that way. Thus, we end up waiting for the DVD release.
I think VDT would be ace in 3D because then it would feel as if the audience was actually in Narnia & I love that idea!! 😀
I would most likely only watch it in 3D if I absolutely had to. I believe that the movie would be degraded and made cheesy if it was 3D= unnecessary things would pop up at the screen and there would be weird zooms. After Prince Caspian, the last thing we need is another Narnia dud….
The first movie I saw in 3D was Journey to the Center of the earth. I enjoyed it a lot but found the strange colors and camera angles annoying and distracting……. I really hope that they DO NOT make VOTDT in 3D and that this is just a false alarm….
I definitely do not want VDT to be in 3D. Almost all of the movies that are tend to be kind of stupid and not really plot based. They usually are aiming at small children who will get a cheap thrill out of the 3D aspect, but not really out of the movie itself. I really hope that they don’t make it like that, if they do they’ll have hundreds of angry Narnia Fans on their backs.
3D if done right is excellent. I have seen several 3D movies, and I enjoyed them. 1) They were IMAX. 2) The glasses were large, well fitting and used polarized lenses. VDT might be a good film for 3D “if” the film were shot on location using no studios. 3D would help a travel film like VDT to allow the audience to gain a perspective of the big outdoors, the size of Narnia. If it is just going to be a gimmick, save their money.
I think that it would be cool. The only thing is it’d be really rather odd to see it in 3D if it’s not MADE for 3D. If they do the 3D thing, I hope it’s actually made for 3D or made to look more realistic than all those other movies just with all the added to make it look 3D like Journey to the Center of the Earth. Definitely not worth seeing unless in 3D. Personal opinion so don’t get offended anybody.
I’d like to see it in 3D, but I’m not sure if it’d be worth the $10 you have to pay here in Mentor, OH for at the Atlas for the 3D movies. I’d probably wait until it comes out on DVD or just see it regular. It may or not be worth $10 to see it 3D
Nooo!!!!!!!!! please do not release it in 3D!!!! i hate 3D movies!! i just cant take something coming out at me its just scary!!!
i am soooooooo looking forward to the voyage of the dawn treader though, it is my favorite book of the whole series!!!
My friend says 3d hurts her eyes. LadinsNspirationluv4eva has a good point, stuff jumping out at people might be freaky. I would also be annoyed if I did not get a chance to see it in 3d which is likely, unless it shows at normal movie theaters? I don’t know, but I hope that whatever they do it will be good. I love Prince Caspian and I can’t see why so many people apparently don’t. I wouldn’t mind seeing Ben Barnes in 3d, though… lol But seriously, I think normal is fine and 3d is fine. Whatever you do, do it well and I should be satisfied.
I think they should keep Narnia the way it is, like The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. I would not be the same feeling in 3D. I say keep it the way it is!
I think that it is a really bad idea for Narnia to push it’s luck with a 3D movie. After Prince Caspian people are questioning if this movie will do well at all, plus with Disney not helping and Andrew Adamson not directing I can’t imagine Fox trying to push the movie beyond it’s limits. Narnia is a 3D world on its own, you don’t need glasses. Let Narnia be Narnia, keep it 2D. I love Narnia to much to see it go down because of Fox and the mistakes they have made with other movies they have done. eragon for instance.
