When I went to see Toy Story 3 last night, I opted out of the IMAX version, because I knew that I wouldn’t be seeing the Narnia trailer with it. Narnia won’t be playing IMAX (as far as we know) and they only show IMAX trailers with IMAX films. Toy Story 3 was incredible, by the way, and is likely one of the best movies of the year. It was funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time.
Now, when the trailers started, we saw a trailer that was 2D for The Sorceror’s Apprentice. After that trailer, the screen instructed us to put out 3D glasses on. After that, we saw 3-D trailers for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole, MegaMind, Smurfs, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. There were probably a couple of others in 3D, but those are the only ones that I can remember.
There were gasps from the audience and then comments like “I forgot about this series” and “Narnia meets Pirates of the Caribbean?” Boy are they in for a surprise!
Now, I also received an e-mail from someone that did not see the trailer in front of Toy Story 3 last night. That is disappointing, and it’s likely the movie theater’s fault, unless the trailer isn’t attached to all copies of TS3. I would highly recommend asking the theater’s concierge if the Narnia trailer is attached to all screenings of TS3. They usually have a master list of where all trailers are playing.
Was the trailer good in 3D? I’m going to say that overall, yes it was. There’s always a problematic area when the camera pans quickly to the right, like it does in the first shot. That is even a problem in movies shot in 3D, such as Avatar. But the rest of the trailer was really pretty great in 3D. Especially when the snow was falling around Lucy. You felt as though you were a part of that magical moment. Not to mention there is still plenty of time for them to keep improving it before the December release.
The good news is, everyone I had talked to saw the trailer before Toy Story, so that’s good. I’m just disappointed I didn’t.
But I DEFINITELY seeing Toy Story again in the near future (THAT MOVIE WAS SO EMOTIONAL! “I laughed, I cried…it moved me, Bob.” The best part was the Ken doll. I was just dying!) and I’ll probably go to Celebration next time, and since you saw it there, I’m sure I will too!
Yeah, I plan on seeing that movie a number of times if I can. And then holding a Toy Story Trilogy Tuesday party at my house after it’s out on Blu-ray.
Hey, speaking of Trilogy Marathon Parties, everybody’s invited to my place Summer 2011 for a Narnia [extended edition] Trilogy Marathon! (but be sure to bring your own beverages) Is there any word for a PC extended edition?
“….it moved me, Bob.” Hahaha! 😉
I don’t think there’s going to be one. Disney dropping the franchise means they likely won’t be doing much to help the franchise from now on… unless they wanted to help themselves. But I doubt it. It’s already past due.
Thanks for this! I was planning on seeing Toy Story 3 this afternoon after work, and I had planned on seeing it in 3D, hoping that the VDT trailer would be in 3D, and knowing that it would probably be at least in 2D. I’m excited to know that it WILL be in 3D! Thanks for updating us!
(And I’m hoping that if, “Narnia meets Pirates of the Carribean?” is a common response, it’s a good thing, rather than an image that turns people away!)
You’re welcome! I hope that you enjoy Toy Story 3. I want to see it again.
The trailer is so awesome! I can’t wait for the movie, and lots of people will see the trailer in theaters because TS3 is one of the most anticipated movies of the year! That is one very good way of letting people know that Narnia is back and better than ever, and hopefully that will be enough for them to come back in December!
Yea, I just got back from the 3d Toy Story screening and there was no VDT trailer, we waited through the credits and no trailer. We were angry!
Thanks for posting this, Paul. I have already made plans to see TS2 3-D tonight. Also, I am planing to post my impression of the trailer tonight on Narnia Features at HollywoodJesus.com. I will probably post fairly late as I will not be able to finish it until I get back from the early evening show. Anyone interested can just click my name and you will be taken to HJ Narnia Features. If my article isn’t up yet, you can read my commentary on 3-D movies!
Thanks!
Wow, I wish I could see it. I only saw the trailer in 2D
I saw Toy Story 3 earlier today in 3D. Sadly, Voyage of the Dawn Treader wasn’t in the preview trailers shown so it looks like the trailer isn’t attached to all screenings of TS3. Was looking forward to seeing it on-screen, too. Maybe next time though.
I am getting the idea that it might only be attached to digital screenings of the film. I just saw TS3 again, this time in 2D, and the trailer was attached in 2D.
I went to Toy Story 3 and the trailer was there. I think it looked good in 3d. And you have to see it on the giant screen. It’s just better than the computer, although I’ve been watching it every time I turn on the computer. December can’t come to soon!
Does anyone know if VDT trailer would be in front of Toy Story 3 in 2D?
Thanks!!! I was telling my family to go see TS3 because narnia 3 preview…. My plan is change… I watch VDT Trailer about 5 times….
I cant wait see it!!!
Wow, my first reaction to seeing the trailer was also: “Narnia meets Pirates of the Caribbean?” I half expected to see Jack Sparrow walking around on the Island of the Dufflepuds!
When I saw Toy Story 3 in 3D it was for our employee showing of the movie, since I work at a movie theatre. I was hoping i would see the trailer, but the only trailers shown were for the Wizards Apprentice and Tangled. Which is strange because we usually have 3-4 showing before every movie. So I would say that it is not attached to all Toy Story 3 films, I know some of it has to do with whether it is digital copy or film. Also not all theatres have a list of trailers showing.
I just saw toy story and yeah the trailer was there. i saw it in 3D, it looked amazing!!!!!
My family is seeing Toy story 3 next week and i can’t wait! I already saw the DT trailer but i’m looking foward to seeing it in the theater!
My dad and I went to see Toy Story 3 in 3-D. We were waiting for the VODT trailer, but it wasn’t there! We were disappointed, but we enjoyed the movie. I just wish I could have seen the trailer in the theater in 3-d!
I heard that Toy Story was fantastic! I can’t wait to go even though I’ve already seen the trailer!
