The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Trailer World Premiere

Here it is, the world premiere of the trailer for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It releases on December 10, 2010 and was directed by Michael Apted, who takes the reigns from previous Narnia film director Andrew Adamson. It stars Ben Barnes as Caspian, Skandar Keynes as Edmund Pevensie, Georgie Henley as Lucy Pevensie and Will Poulter as Eustace Clarence Scrubb. This is an excellent trailer that makes me very excited for the movie, and not just because I proposed on the set!

Opens with a shot of a building that looks something like an old parliament building, and pans over to a sign that reads “Mother England Needs You | ENLIST HERE NOW!”

Soldier: Are you sure you’re 18?

Edmund: Why, do I look older?

Lucy appears at a doorway carrying a box.

Lucy: Edmund, you’re supposed to be helping me with the groceries.

A random person that was behind Edmund in line laughs at him, saying: Better luck next time, eh squirt!

Lucy and Edmund are putting boxes onto their bicycles outside of the building.

Edmund: Squirt? I’m a King!

Lucy: Not in this world.

Cuts to: A painting on a wall of an ocean, and in the distance is a ship.

Edmund: Lucy, have you seen this ship before?

Close up of the ship sailing on the ocean in the painting.

Lucy: It’s very Narnian looking, isn’t it?

Cuts to: the wind blowing, and Lucy, Edmund and Eustace standing around the room.

Eustace: What’s going on here?

Lucy: Edmund, the painting!

Just then the painting starts pouring water out. Eustace runs toward it, taking it from the wall.

Edmund: Don’t Eustace! No!

Cuts to: a shot of the room filling up with water, the children swimming around in the room, with a flash cut to the children swimming up toward the surface. Flash cut to show Lucy’s head above water with the Dawn Treader quickly approaching.

Lucy: Edmund!

Cut’s to a shot of Lucy being brought on board the ship by someone who could be Caspian, on a huge swing like contraption (someone who knows what parts of a ship like that are called, please let me know).

We see Lucy looking in what looks like a mirror or something with Aslan looking out, speaking.

Lucy: Aslan.

Aslan: Welcome. You have come far, but your journey lies beyond.

While Aslan speaks we see quick, and beautiful shots of the Dawn Treader amongst Narnian scenery and a Minotaur aboard the ship.

Cuts to a shot of Lucy and Edmund in blankets. Drinian is standing in the background.

Lucy: Reepicheep!

Reepicheep bows his head.

Reepicheep: Your Majesties!

We then see a shot of a liquid looking mermaid coursing through the water. Lucy waves to the mermaid from on deck.

Edmund: So if there are no wars to fight, then why are we here?

Shot of Caspian opening a doorway with Edmund following. Shot of Edmund using a telescope. Shot of an Island surrounded by thick clouds.

Cuts to: Shot of Coriakin throwing a huge scroll out that unravels onto the floor. (Reminds me of a shot of the Mad Hatter doing the same thing in Alice in Wonderland, but not the same really.)

Coriakin: You are all about to be tested.

Cuts to: Shot of Eustace looking at something off camera.

Then to: A shot of the Dawn Treader with lanterns lit and smoke floating around, kind of like the Smoke Monster on Lost but white smoke instead of black. Close up of Edmund. Then close up of The White Witch, looking like she does on the huge Dawn Treader standee.

The White Witch: Edmund…. I can make you my king… an much more.

Cuts to: Lucy blowing the dust off of a huge book. The book in the Magician’s library. The letters rearrange themselves on the cover. They’re going to spell out the title of the book, which was revealed elsewhere but I’m not going to say, as it wasn’t finished in the trailer.

We then see a shot of Lucy, reflected in a mirror on the page of the book, and her face magically turns into Susan’s.

Lucy: I’m beautiful!

Aslan’s roar sounds from the book and the pages begin to turn quickly. Flash cuts to a shot of Lucy standing with the book by a pedestal, snow falling all around her as she looks up, amazed at what she’s seeing.

Cuts to Reepicheep climbing the mast of the Dawn Treader.

Coriakin: You’ve got an extraordinary destiny. Something greater than you could have imagined.

Reepicheep now stands at the top of the crow’s nest.

Shot of Edmund holding a glowing sword, kind of like Sting from The Lord of the Rings.

Shot of Liliandil turning into a glowing orb and flying straight up into the sky. Edmund, Caspian and Lucy standing around.

Title Card: Return to Hope

Shot of a faun, flipping over someone while holding some form of spear, and landing a kick to someone’s chest. Then a shot of Lucy holding a Bow and Arrow.

Title Card: Return to Magic

Shot of a table with golden things on it and suddenly Coriakin materializes and turns around, book in hands.

Eustace: This place just gets weirder and weirder.

Shot of Dufflepuds jumping around as Eustace dodges.

Title Card: Return to Narnia

Shot of the Dawn Treader with a small boat being paddled away, across a sea of lilies.

Aslan: You have returned for a reason.

Close up shot of the small boat, Reepicheep is riding on the bow. Caspian and Edmund are paddling with Eustace and Lucy riding.

Cuts to a shot of Aslan walking over to them, as they now stand on the ground with a wave hanging in the background.

Aslan: Your adventure begins now.

Shot of Susan walking toward the camera, then Peter doing the same, followed by Lucy and Edmund doing the same.

Cuts to a shot of Aslan roaring.

  1. I like how the trailer keeps the consistency of the last two films but it still gives the new film a different feel.

While I’m very excited, my only concern has to be with Aslan. He doesn’t look as grand or realistic.

Anna and William make an appearance at the end….I am very curious as to how their characters will fit into the plot.

    • I think Peter and Susan are going to be used metaphorically… like in PC they were kind of Caspian’s advisers. Now, in VDT, Edmund and Lucy are. The way they’re all walking the same way makes me think that for some reason.

  2. Oh, my goodness. That was incredible. I can’t wait to see the movie! Though the bit with Ed trying to enlist did make me sad.

  3. OMYGOD! I waited so long for this, and it looks AMAZING! I don’t want to wait till December. Even William and Anna are in it!

  4. Loved it. Regardless of the changes and other differences from the book this trailer alone has me excited for the film. It did it’s job as far as I’m concerned!

  5. Dear Paul,
I am from Indonesia, is there any possibility that my country can have the same release date like other countries?

and I like the trailer. it looks promising. desperately seeking to watch the full movie. (so I can see king Caspian speaks ^_^)

  6. I’m glad they use Catholic sites to promotion.

About trailer…. It’s very good but I think there should be more Eustache and Aslan.

    • I am very, very pleased with what roles Aslan had in the trailer. (and the trailer in general!!! LOL). But your right… Seems they left Eustace and Caspian out of it almost completely. Maybe saving more for later! =D=D! Oh like I care. YAY TRAILER! Who cares about changes, I am shaking with happiness =D!

      • well, there probably will be more then just one trailer 😛 In second mayby will be more Eustace, Caspian, Aslan and EUSTACE AS DRAGON!! 😀
I’ve just watched trailer (again :P) in HD and it’s great, great, great 😀

        • ohhh…I never thought that way ..anyway it’s TOOOO GREAT!!!!!!!!so happy :):):)
Will &Anna are in it too …
          GO NARNIA…PTL 🙂

  7. This trailer is a nice introduction. It sets the movie well. For those of us that have seen the super trailer know that there is much to come in future trailers. Some scenes have been expanded and many left out. This is an excellent first trailer. We have seen the White Witch. There is more to be seen about the magic book. We will have a lot to talk about.

  8. Looks so awesome. Still say it needs a little more of King Caspian in it, though. Ben looks great! And we catch a glimpse of Tony in it twice, which I thought was awesome.

  9. I loved loved loved the trailer!
THough I would’ve liked to see a bit more of Eustace (or a dragon? :P)

I loved the fact that we get to see Anna (in the mirror in the book! Nice move!) and William, even though it’s probably very short…

The only thing I frowned at, is that Edmund seems to make the same mistake as in the second movie, by presuming his royalty reaches all the way to our world… We’ve seen that one allready…

    But, I REALY LOVED IT!!!

  10. I’m beyond happy, tears are coming down, the more I see this magnificent trailer, the more emotional I get!

Does anybody know if it’s going to be uploaded to yuotube any sooner?

  11. Loved the trailer! I want to see more, Dec is so far away. I will call my friends and tell them to check out the trailer. The Voyage is closer!

  12. Paul Martin the trailer does look good is it going to be a lot like the book. Still lokes better than prince caspian

  13. I loved the trailer!
I would have liked to see more of Eustace and Caspian, because they both take very important personal journeys in the book.
But I’m so happy with how it turned out.
(P.S. we didn’t even get to hear Ben’s British accent)
But this is going to be a great movie. Nothing can crush my spirits now!

  14. Um…it looks great. But Anna and Will are NOT supposed to come back. What’s up with them being in it???

    I feel bad for Ed…teehee…

    And…yeah. Can’t wait for December!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Awesome! I already watched it twice! I was looking forward to a quote or something from Eustace and Caspian, but maybe there will be another trailer!

  16. I just rewatched it for the fourth time and I’m kind of disappointed about the major lack of Eustace and Caspian. Caspian didn’t even say a word in the trailer and I think that you can get away with that in a second or third trailer release, but being that this is the first taste of what audiences are getting of this movie, I think it’s a mistake to make it appear as though Caspian and Eustace are unimportant characters. Are their parts downplayed in the film?

  17. I’m immensely happy that Edmund was 90% of this trailer. I think he had more lines and screentime in this whole 2:10 minutes than he had in the whole Prince Caspian movie.

    • Completely Agreed!
I was so excited to see him, haha!

I don’t like how they have him whining at the beginning though.. because it doesn’t seem like it works because he was the mature one in PC when Peter was whining.. but whatever, I’m just happy he’s talking I guess haha 🙂

  18. The CGI effects were a bit unrealistic. Is it just me, or is that how 3D movies generally go?
Aslan did look sort of fake, but Reep’s voice is hardly different!
    I wanna see some dragons!

    Go VDT!

    • good point, they left out any mention of the dragon or of the sea-serpent… I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

  19. Oh joy!!! The trailer is here! Last night, when my family and I found out that you had to be a Facebook member to see the trailer on Narnia.com, we were really disappointed. 🙁 But this morning, my sister woke me up at 6:30 this morning and said, “The trailer’s on YouTube!” Yahoo!

I think it all looks pretty amazing! 😀 I think the movie makers had fun with their special effects. It almost seemed to me that the trailer focused more on Edmund even than it did on Lucy. Sail on!

    • Did anyone else notice that following the line ,”You’re all about to be tested” that the next shots are of Edmund being tempted by the White Witch and then Lucy and the beautifying spell? I thought that was a cool touch!

Lucy looks older; Edmund seems to be about the same; I think I can live with Caspian’s beard; and Reepicheep didn’t sound that different so far! Sail on!

  20. This first trailer is great, but I agree that Aslan doesn’t look as good as he has in the past movies… and Susan and peter are NOT supposed to be there. Aslan told then they were NOT coming back, and they are not in the book. I hope they are ONLY metaphorical. i’d hate to see this movie messed up by adding things that are not supposed to be there.

    • Who said that Susan and Peter are in Narnia. Maybe yes or maybe not. There are several places in the movie where they could be on earth and still be part of the movie, the beginning, the magic book, the island of dreams (dark island) or others. We do not know yet.

  21. I loved it!!!!

However, in the transcript, where it says the Chief Dufflepud’s line, the voice sounds a lot like Will Poulter, and it seems like something Eustace would say… doesn’t it?

  22. I can’t say as I’m greatly encouraged or relieved by this trailer. It looks to me like they’re going to do to Voyage what they did to Caspian.
    And that’s terrible.

  23. So I guess Peter and Susan appear when Edmund, Lucy, and Eustace reach the end of the world.

  24. Eustace: This place keeps getting weirder and weirder.

That’s a perfect Eustace thing to say!

Did anybody else notice the White Witch’s green eyes? I’m thinking they’re setting her up to be the Lady of the Green Kirtle.

  25. Yes the first thing I noticed was The White Witches green eyes the suits her well and I can’t wait for the movie!!!! ;D

    • Tilda has naturally green eyes. Her eye color was changed for LWW. Maybe they are letting Tilda use her natural eye color. Who knows.

  26. I liked it, especially the standing wave at the end. 😀 The tone is lighter and more magical than PC and should have a greater appeal to non-readers. Sail on VDT! 🙂

  27. My worries that they would change the movie too much are over after watching this! It looks so cool! But what is the White Witch doing in here? Oh well, can’t wait to see it!
    ~ReepicheepFan

    • That’s the fun thing about trailers. What is included..and what is left out. I remember seeing the PC trailer with the Night Raid and going “What the…?!” I’m still holding my breath on other changes, but I LOVE what they do have…The lilies, the Mer-People, the Magic Book, and the Dawn Treader looks AMAZING!

The White Witch is included as part of the Island of Dreams. Like a cameo with a line or 2. 😉 Of all the possible changes I’ve heard about, that’s the one that concerns me least.

  28. I wonder why they made Peter’s sword glow when Edmund is holding it… for that mater, why is Edmund holding it, Caspian’s supposed to have it… and why Lucy is carrying/using Susan’s bow? Interesting parallels. I guess they are the

  29. Well, Narnia trailer day is always fun…too bad the trailer wasn’t as good as I thought it would be.

My major concern: too many trailer cliches. The whole “your destiny is to save Narnia” and “Narnia rests on your shoulders” things just got me upset. Because that isn’t true! Narnia isn’t at war, and it isn’t counting on Edmund and Lucy to save it. This book is a character book; I want to see the characters grow, not a big “NARNIA IS DEPENDING ON YOU” plot.

And the White Witch scene: that just gets me more confused. Edmund already triumphed over Jadis in PC when he shattered the glass/ice…why would they have to have her appear and continue to tempt him further? That didn’t make any sense to me at all. And Perry Moore stated that “she would appear when you most expect her to”. First off, when I read VDT, not ONCE did I think that the White Witch would appear. Then he goes on to say that “shes in a place that will surprise you”.
Well, if I am expecting her to show up, why would I be surprised that she is there? That is completely contridicting.

Peter/Susan scene: That just sent me through a whirlwind of complete and total confusion. Why would they be in Narnia? It’s probably a montage or metaphor or something, but it just made me feel uneasy.

But more on the trailer: they followed the basic storyline pretty well. The special effects were okay. Aslan looked fine, but WAY too much Reepicheep. They did a whole intro on Reep; you’d think they’d do that to Caspian, right?

Overall, I don’t think that this is affecting the overall movie. I just think that this was a bad trailer for a good film. But I’m happy that the storyline is basically the same–I guess we’ll have to wait for more footage.

    ~Zack

    • I hope your conclusion is right. I can’t stand the cheesy lines in the trailer. PC had way too many cheesy lines and anachronisms (“You’ve got to be kidding me” “OMG, he’s so cute,” etc.), and I was hoping they would fix that in VDT. “This place just gets weirder and weirder” is simply infamous.

      • Your right, but Edmund triumphed over her. He is now above his fears…my point is, why would they have her go to him? He already triumphed over her in PC even though she didn’t tempt him in PC. It is starting to get too repetative.
        ~Zack

        • Lewis believed that sin never really goes away. The White Witch is back because she never really left. She is always trying to get back. My guess is that Edmund is holding the glowing sword because he takes her out again. This could be a fun scene. I love watching the witch get it.

  30. I’ve watched it like four times and I just get more anxious to see it. I can’t believe WWII is still going on in this series. How long as it been. A year and a few months now, I believe. Oh, well I can’t wait. I’ll be seeing the trailer again tomorrow when I see Toy Story 3, can’t wait to see the non narnia and the somewhat narnia fans(the not into the sites and updates, but still interested) see the trailer tomorrow.

  31. Peter and susan need not be IN narnia ,probably at the beginning will they appear…and Caspian has almost totally been left off ,don’t you think??
any comments on Lilliandil???She turns to a star??????confusing..
    Anyway,the TREADER SAILS ON. 🙂

  32. Paul, this is a comment about you poll. You don’t exactly give a n middle-of-the-road choices. It seems to me there is quite a gap between “It was terrible.” and “It wasn’t my favorite, but I still have hope.” 🙂

  33. How did y’all like the picture which the children swim through? The painting seemed to me to resemble the one in the old BBC VoDT a lot. Did that occur to anybody else?

  34. those 2 pictures of aslan look like Scar from lion king to me! the longer, skinny snout!

  35. i love narnia movies ….
    i love skandar keynes
    i love william moseley
    i love ashlan
    and all ……

  36. Quick Analysis: I hope everyone doesn’t panic at the appearance of the White Witch “right when you’d expect her.” Honestly, I would expect her to appear in the Dark Island and no other place. Her green eyes do make me wonder though. I’m hoping it’s b/c of the coloring of the scene, but obviously Green Kirtle comes to mind…

  37. just by watching the trailer i can sat to myself NARNIA’S GOING TO BOOM!!!!!! I CAN’T WAIT DECEMBER..

this december’s gonna blow my mind imagine narnia and harrt potter movie at the same month!(if i am not mistaken)

  38. WHY does the White Withc still appear??? Please, be more realistic with the book!!!

  39. FINALLY!!! You can twell Walden that I’m saying “Great work on the trailer!!!”

  40. Just watched it for the fifth time, and I positively LOVED it! Everything looks amazing!

The ONLY thing that has me nervous, is what we’ve been shown of Edmund. He’s gone through some serious character arch’s in the last two shows – one’s I LOVED. In PC, Peter was going a little out of control because of the whole, “I was a king!” thing. But Edmund was the one with his head on straight, and being VERY smart. The thing with the White Witch in PC almost got both Peter and Caspian when she tried to tempt them, but Edmund ended up triumphing over her there. I thought this was an AWESOME touch, because it showed his weakness, (going to her side in the first one), turn to strength. It showed that he knew what she could do, and was no longer tempted by her.

But here, I almost feel like they are repeated what happened in PC, only instead of Peter going a bit overboard, it’s Ed. It seems like Edmund’s growth from PC may be lost. 🙁 I will be VERY sad for that. I loved his “head-on-straight” thing going.

But, I’m probably reading FAAAAR to much into it. 😀 I’m sure it will be great, regardless of what I may be nervous about! 😀 Haha!

  41. OMG! What war? Why is the White Witch in this one too? Peter & Susan aren’t supposed to be in Narnia (remember they are to old). Where was Eustace. He is the most pivital character of all. What happens to him makes us all think!

This is my favorite book of the them all and I am not impressed so far on their interpretation of what C.S. Lewis wrote.

    • 1) Note that they were not at war. It was a skirmish.
      2) The White Witch is someone who Edmund fears greatly. That is a dream.
      3) Peter and Susan aren’t in it how you think.
      4) You didn’t see Eustace in the trailer? He was all over it, but not the focal point. This one was about getting people to remember the characters that they know. Next will likely be introducing new characters.

  42. Trust out internet router to blow just hours before the trailer was released!! Still, it’s up and running again now…

I can’t believe how much Georgie sounds like Anna! It’s uncanny. Excellent trailer though. Looking forward to Dec 10th!!
