Early Voyage of the Dawn Treader Ticket Sales Don’t Look Very Promising

David Sutton Holds Four Tickets for Voyage of The Dawn Treader in 3D

David Sutton Holds Four Tickets for Voyage of The Dawn Treader in 3D Tonight Deadline listed some early sales results from Friday’s Box Office Sales. The website estimates that The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has sold $9 million which would give the movie a projected opening weekend of $26.3 million. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe sold $23 million opening day ($65.5 million opening weekend for a total of $745 million) and Prince Caspian sold $19 million opening day ($55 million opening weekend for a total of $419.6 million). If Deadline’s numbers are accurate the Voyage of the Dawn Treader may not be successful enough for Fox to make more Narnia movies, but there is something you can do about it. Opening weekend sales are a critical way to measure the success of a film. If you would like to ensure that The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a success and that more Narnia Movies are made I strongly advise you to see the movie this weekend. I encourage you to take your entire family to the movies this Saturday or Sunday. If you want to see a new movie adaptation of The Silver Chair you need to encourage all of your friends and family to see The Voyage of the Dawn Treader this week. Lets join together to ensure that these low estimates don’t become a reality, because if we don’t it may be the end of any hope for future Narnia movies. I hope Deadline’s numbers are wrong, but I have shared them because a fellow NarniaFans.com writer Michael Thom believes that this is a reliable source. Hopefully Narnia Fans will prove that website wrong by showing up in their local theaters to see The Voyage of the Dawn Treader again with their family and friends.

    • I agree. If that’s what you want then you need to do something about it. See the film again tomorrow and get a group of friends and family to see it. They will only be able to make more movies if the movies continue to be profitable.

  1. Yeah, I was disappointed at how empty the theater was when I went with my friends tonight. As much as I love the movies, I don’t think we’re gonna get Silver Chair. But hopefully that’s just the over-reactive pessimist in me and ticket sales will go up over the weekend. 🙂

    • Yeah It was the same for my theater, unfortunately I don’t have enough money, or any for that matter, to go see it again

      • yeah, same here…i just don’t have the money to see it again this soon 🙁 if i did i would see it over and over! lol

      • I saw LWW 14 times in theaters and saw PC 10 times in theaters. So far I have seen VDT 3 times, but I doubt that I will be able to afford to see it too many times.

  2. The Narnia Chronicles movie series might turn out to be a christmas ‘season’ long playing movie franchise audience rather than an hyper event moviefan fix/adrenaline opening weekend juggernaught type.
When i was recommending to some people (younger mothers)- ‘voyage of the dawn treader’ as a good movie i’d just seen – they didn’t know it was on (but they all identified with a ‘Narnia’ movie very positively rather more than knowing the individual story title), but it isn’t yet holidays when they might otherwise have know what’s playing at the cinema for themselves.

    • That very well may be true, but the problem with that is that movie studios often base their production on sequels on the first (and second) weekend sales, I wonder if it could be a product of the fact that this is a family movie, and that that target audience is being extra frugal with the economy, and Christmas shopping. I know I’m currently unemployed and without my parents support I couldn’t buy any presents or see any movies. I hope fox takes these things into account

      • Our family had planned to see the movie tonight, but school and work schedules got in the way. No school conflicts next Saturday, so we are definitely going then. We’ll be in the second week numbers!

  3. BUT what about the international releases? AUS, UK? surely their #s matter to in the sales?

    • Unfortunately, it appears that the Australian figures were worse than the American ones even. It didn’t even knock Harry Potter out of first place even though that had already been out for a while. It’s opening weekend in Australia made a little over 2 million (PC made over 4 million and LWW made over 6 million there on opening weekend).

I don’t know about the UK. I would be interested too if anyone has any info about the British box office.

  4. I started getting a little worried about ticket sales when my family went to see it on Friday. The theater wasn’t even half full. Sure, it was a 4:40 matinee, but it was the first showing in our town.

I was glad that it was quiet enough in the theater to actually hear the movie, but worried about what the low crowd means for the possibilities of any future movies.

    • Same at my local theater. There wasn’t even a *line* waiting to get in. I wonder if the way it was promoted and all the early reviews scared people off. If so, that’s really sad because it is a great movie.

      • yeah at my theatre there was a big fuss of promotions about! i think they expected a big crowd! i mean there was various places for lines! and in my theatre it was mostly empty! i mean there were people there but nothing like a friday night movie crowd!

  5. this is so not happening! i wanna see all 7(SEVEN!) books turned into movies! i mean, they only have 4 more to go:D

    • I KNOW I KNOW IM REALLY REALLY ITCHing to see LAst Battle and Magicians nephew on screen! For me its not about Potter, though I enjoy them! This is MY franchise this my thing, its not fair! 🙁 we want our movies too!

  6. There is a fabulous review (5 stars!) from the UK’s “The Daily Mail” film review Chris Tookey from yesterday (Friday 10th December):

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/reviews/article-1337309/The-Chronicles-Narnia-The-Voyage-The-Dawn-Treader-A-new-dawn-Narnia.html

He thinks that this film will be great and that Disney may well end up regretting dropping the franchise.

He seems confident that Silver Chair will be filmed.

For my part, I WILL be going to see it, but I have to wait till after Christmas due to personal commitments I have. Can hardly wait though!

  7. I am trying to do my part. I am having a Client Appreciation Event (I am a Realtor in Spokane WA) and bought out one whole showing of the movie, for today at 1:20.
I’ll have over 260 people coming to this. Hopefully they’ll enjoy it and spread the word.

  8. I saw it last night and was also worried due to the fact that there was a pretty empty theater. When I was in school people were mentioning going to see the new Narnia movie but a lot people started saying things like they can’t see it until a week or two or how they don’t like those movies. I was always worried that with the way they marketed the movie that it would seem a bit “kidish” and lose the teenage audieance that Prince Caspian tried so hard to win (and did). The movie was fantastic of course and on Facebook I have posted up a trailer and telling everyone to go see it for the safety of the franchise and to continue having a good Christian based series out in “politically correct” Hollywood. But I still have faith in it but I just think it’ll just come in time. My only worry is it’s competition with tron next weekend.

  9. Honestly we were here 2 years ago when Fox bought Narnia, and we were all worried that the films might not get made. 26 million while short is still 26 MILLION I DON’T HAVE IN MY POCKET! Fox has vested interest keeping the franchise going, ie Harper Collins. A slow start dosent mean you don’t fiinish the race.

  10. Hello,

I just saw Voyage of the Dawn Treader this afternoon with a friend and we both loved it!

The theater was full. We live in Ulsan, South Korea. Christians are fairly strong here and the fantasy genre is very popular in Korea so I think that’s why the theater was full.

I do hope like the rest of you that “The Silver Chair” shall be made. I think that book has some themes that are very striking.

I was very impressed by the work that Walden Media did on the film. I think they really presented their best work. The film was solid all around and the appearance of Peter and Susan was well done to remind the audience of the two eldest Pevensie children. I give the film two thumbs up and five stars!

  11. I want to see the Silver Chair, Last Battle, Magicians Nephew, AND Horse and His Boy made into a movie.
I saw Dawn Treader last night, and there weren’t very many people, but we went early. Then we left and saw a loooong line of people we knew who were going to see it, so hopefully the ticket sales will be good!!! I’m gunna try and get my aunt and cousins and my parents to go see it again tomorrow…

  12. But in mexico VDT is at the top of the box office! Ive already seen it 2 times and both of them it was completely full

  13. This coming Sunday I have 20 people coming with me to go see this movie….. I really do hope the sales will go up. I keep posting stuff on facebook and trying to get people to go see it! I will sure be praying for Narnia this weekend……

  14. Guys calm down! The one who choose december 10th as relase date must have known that:

    *Its not yet vacation time
*People are working hard, making plans and else for the end of the year
    *Its friday, people are working.

This movie will be the decembers movie! Its only the first day, we have to wait todays numbers and yesterdays REAL numbers because there was too few time to count all they got from it.

Here (Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Niterói) It was empty too, but not only for narnia. The ones that was there was young people who finished studing and are not working yet.

Only people with free time, or the real fans went to watch it. By christmas you all will see how the world are going to see narnia.

  15. $45 million weekend isn’t promising? People. Stop comparing this to the other two movies. What it needs is for people who love it to talk it up and give it some legs.
Tangled nearly tripled its second week because people talked it up.

    • My figures are projections from Box Office Mojo. Hopefully that will hold up. If not, it’s just because all movie ticket sales are down. but they should rebound as we near Christmas.

      • I just scrolled down to the bottom of the comments to post that you’d said on HJ that the movie was expected to make $45,000,000 rather than just $23 million. Looks like you beat me to it though. 😉

Come on people, tell everyone you can to GO watch the movie! If you yourself didn’t like the movie, don’t tell people you didn’t like it until AFTER they’ve seen it too. 😉

    • The film will be compared to LWW and PC because those films will be used to determine its success.

  16. *hopefully* I’m seeing it again today with two of my friends. Plans aren’t final yet, but I reeaaallly hope we do!

But, I mean, 26 million doesn’t seem bad to me… I mean, I know nothing about the movie business, but is that just bad because it’s being compared to LWW (which I think they need to stop doing), or is that really not good?

    • 26 million would be beyond awful. I know it sounds like a lot, but when you account for the $150 million budget and $100 million spent on marketing for the film, it’s not.

  17. I believe if they made The Magician’s Nephew and show how Narnia was created, put more emphasis on how Narnia and all its characters are parts of the Bible, A lot more people would want to see it. Somehow, the true meaning behind Narnia has been left out. Magician’s Nephew is the answer to all the unanswered questions.

    • I would have wanted to see Silver Chair made next, but because of how poorly this film is selling I don’t think that making Silver Chair next is a very good idea. I think Magician’s Nephew will make more money than the Silver Chair so this film should be made next. Magician’s Nephew is my favorite book and I hope they make it into a film.

      • I belive that, as we are having problems, the right thing to do is: Shoot silver chair AND Magicians nephew together, so they would have the young will poulter and will have much money saved up as they could shoot im same country(s) for both.

So editing would go later, after Magicians nephew releasing.

You wonder how magical would that be? It would be like : im watching to silver chair now and its like traveling back on time, im watching will poulter much younger than is now.

Twilight saga is being shoot, editing and releasing VERY fast, its something that narnia should try as I meant before.

Saves time, saves money, saves our desire to see what one man once thought about. I belive that after 60 years of Dawn Treaders publishing this novel have changed milions minds about any kind of fact.

I would really like, David that someone who works with Narnia movie could read this, such as fox people or michael apted if possible (maybe this can be a bit hard).

Im sure that december 10th was a way bad day for releasing, only two days to decide the future? NO this is wrong, i belive that if we wait until January 1st (or arround that) we will see that this movie made much fans, much money that dawn treader will make 2x money from LWW.

Thanks for reading this i hope you all understand what i meant.

*NOTE: during narrow heavens scene, wen they were kidnaped it looked like magicians nephew scene at the white witch world, one salon before her statue.

  18. I wish I could see it this weekend, but I have exams. I will be seeing it next weekend. I wanted to do it this weekend badly, but what can I do. I do believe that the release date should have been a little closer to the holidays then it would really boost because families are together and it the theater is the one place to have fun. Many have exams so this maybe the reason.

  19. I saw Dawn Treader yesterday, opening day here in the US. I LOVED it!! I’m currently unemployed, and have been for almost two years. If I had the money to spend, I’d see it again today. But, I’ve been recommending it to all my friends – hopefully, they’ll pick up some of the slack in sales.

  20. I want to see it so bad, but I can’t go this weekend. I really wish it wasn’t up against Potter. There are a lot of people (me included) that can only afford to see one movie. I will pick VDT, but people with daughters will probably see tangled, and potter fans will see potter. My sis loves Narnia, but took her daughters to see tangled. I would love to see all three, but I’m loyal to Narnia. 🙂

  21. Saw it last night, and theatre only had about 20 people in it. Doubt we’ll make it to the Last Battle.

  22. Why did they show it in India so early; surely those figures count, especially for a country in which it’s so popular? Confused…

It also had less budget than it’s predecessors, so it’s probably made more profit.

By the way, I’ve seen it 3 times and it just gets better and better! I was a little disappointed the first time I watched it, probably because I had such high expectations and Prince Caspian is my FAVOURITE film, but if you didn’t really like it you should give it another go. It’s gets better!

  23. I was surprised to see that Douglas Gresham had a cameo as a slave trader. Did Narnia Fans ever mention this tidbit? That alone makes it worth it to see the movie. Yes, it is totally different from the book but it stands on its own merit. It is a good movie and I recommend it to all.

  24. When my girlfriend and I went to watch Narnia in 3D there were only 6 people including ourselves, at $30 a couple I can understand that. I believe the movies, as well as the books, are well worth the price and time put into them. The effects were astounding and the story pretty well matched with the book! I love seeing the books come to life like that!!

  25. Well, I went and it was brilliant. It’s obvious they are all set up to continue with the Silver Chair. Maybe I can lean on my family to see it again. I’d see it again in a heartbeat.

  26. I really wish I could go this weekend, but I can’t. So I’m gonna see it next weekend with my brother (who loves Narnia) and a bunch of my friends (who aren’t big Narnia fans, but I’m dragging them to it! haha). 🙂 I really hope the sales go up though, I really want to see the Silver Chair and especially The Last Battle.

  27. i saw it twice yesterday, both with a group of 5 other people! and even before i saw this article i have been telling everyone i see to go see it!!!!! i’ll probably see it two more times, and hopefully with fairly large groups of people!!! oh i hope more than anything that this does well so they keep going!!!!!!!!! it was so awesome!

  28. I ought to suggest to Fox and Walden Media that if they want to continue with Narnia they should skip the Silver Chair and The Horse and His Boy. No offense to either of these stories, but I think The Magician’s Nephew (which is the story of how Narnia came to be) and the Final Battle (the conclusion of the Narnia story) would fair better at the Box Office then these other two. I once saw a version of the Silver Chair and I have to admit it lost me, mainly because for me Eutice wasn’t a favorite character and they were trying to introduce some other female character with him that just didn’t work, I wasn’t drawn in. Without Edmund, Susan, Peter, and especially Lucy I found that I just wasn’t interested. I would be interested in seeing the professors story on screen and of course the last installment, as for Eutice friend, she can be replaced with Susan in the Final Battle there that would work.

    • No, no, no! You cannot replace Jill Pole with Susan in The Last Battle! That is a monumental change from the canon that will never sit well with those who love the books. Along with Peter, Susan is told at the end of Prince Caspian that she is too old to return to Narnia. The same thing happens for Edmund and Lucy at the end of Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Peter, Edmund, and Lucy do not physically return to Narnia in The Last Battle, but instead find themselves in Aslan’s Country. Only Eustace and Jill are able to return to Narnia and take part in the battle. Sadly, by the time of The Last Battle, Susan is no longer a friend of Narnia.

I am sorry to read that the opening weekend is not going as well as hoped for the movie. My family saw it the second day and we absolutely loved it. I think it was the best movie of the three. When it was over, one of the first things my son (age 11) asked was “When will they make The Silver Chair into a movie?” It can’t happen soon enough to please him!

Others have commented that the troubled economy is possibly responsible for the empty seats in the theatres, and I agree that this is probably the case. Parents have to make hard choices about where to spend money, and movies are expensive and just can’t be the priority. I’m grateful that my family was able to go on opening weekend.

    • oh my goodness…NO! that would not work for any true Narnian fan! Eustace and Susan would never play off each other that is why Lewis did not write it that way. Susan was a doubter and Eustace a new believer. NEVER!

  29. I THINK THAT WE NEED TO PRAISE GOD FOR THE SUCCESS OF THIS MOVIE.. HE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN CHANGE THE WAY OF THIS MOVIE. HE IS ALMIGHTY… HE HAS THE LAST WORD..

THIS NIGHT, BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP, PRAISE GOD AND BELIVE THAT HE CAN DO IT!!!! ¡¡¡HE CAN SAVE NARNIA!!!

  30. i’m planning to whatch the movie at saturday 18th with friends and family cause i am from germany and here the film will start at the 16th dec.

  31. I have not read all the above comments but are the estimates taking in to consideration that we are in an economic crisis right now. I feel like the numbers need to be looked at differently and accordingly. During LLW I could have taken my son 5 times if we had wanted to. We have gone 2 times this weekend but wanted to go more unfortunately our bank account would not allow for this. I believe from what i have seen at the theater this weekend no one is seeing any movies due to lack of money.

  32. I saw the The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader and I thought it was amazing! I’m a missionary here in Romania. Here it opened a week before the US and Canada so I was able to see it on December 4th. This week I’m actually going to see it again and take the orphan girl that I’m mentoring to see the movie for her birthday gift. I really, really hope the ticket sales go up because it would be a huge shame to discontinue to the film series. Come on people, please encourage your friends to see the movie because it was really great 🙂 I loved all the special effects, the story line and it in 3D. It was brilliant!

  33. If Christian art isn’t good, it isn’t good. If people don’t want to see it, the producers need to step up and start making better films.
