Get ready for more Narnia content. How much more? It appears to be a lot more than we were getting before.
Netflix developing series and films
Netflix will develop new series and film projects based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved The Chronicles of Narnia series. Under the terms of a multi-year deal between Netflix and The C.S. Lewis Company, Netflix will develop classic stories from across the Narnia universe into series and films for its members worldwide. All series and films produced through the deal will be Netflix productions, with Mark Gordon of Entertainment One (eOne) alongside Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber serving as executive producers for series and as producers for features.
Douglas Gresham commented: “It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world. Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”
Mark Gordon added: “eOne and I are excited to be collaborating with The C.S. Lewis Company and Netflix who have the capacity to translate the Narnia universe into both stellar feature-length and episodic programming. We cannot wait to get started on the multiple productions we hope to undertake.”
What about The Silver Chair movie?
We don’t really know at this point. That was in development with eOne and Sony Pictures. There was a script and a director attached. The interesting thing about this announcement is that it mentioned both films and series, which means that The Silver Chair could still move forward as planned, with the same creative team now making the movie for Netflix instead.
This is all speculation though.
TV Series and Films?
Yeah, this is something kind of unprecedented. The Chronicles of Narnia is a seven book series that has only hints at things that happened on other planets, such as Charn. There was a lot that happened between each of the books as well. Are they planning on exploring these things? Time will tell. So far, it appears that they’ll be starting with the seven books, but other parts of the press release have me wondering if they’ll go further than that.
Okay! This is cool! Hopefully there will be some screen adaptation of Horse and His Boy at some point then! Either a feature length film or a tv series! I mean if they are doing both series and films I would hope all 7 books are given adaptations. Question is will we go through LWW Prince Caspian and VDT again? What would be cool is if they start with Silver Chair film, then Magicians Nephew, then Last Battle, and while each is in production, release episodes of the familiar titles, LWW, PC, VDT and in the middle throw in a season for Horse and His Boy! This way we get straight to the new stuff without having to wait to get past the first three again, but at the same time we get to see those familiar stories adapted in a new way!
Thanks for the update Paul!
