Reviews from ReelAdvice, the NY Times, and more

Here are five reviews of the movie from quite a variety of sources!

Mid-Day reviewed the movie, and here was their verdict: “For its visual appeal and enchanting story, this voyage is definitely worth taking.” An excerpt from the article which I loved: “Harry Potter fans might look down upon The Chronicles Of Narnia as an enterprise trying to duplicate their success. Despite similarities between the two works (wizardry, magic, heroic children), Narnia has created a niche of its own. After a brilliant start and a weak middle, the third in series — Voyage of the Dawn Treader — brings back the much deserved glory to the franchise.” You can read the whole article HERE.

ReelAdvice rated the movie 4.5/5. Their verdict? ‘”The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” is a surprisingly outstanding film and another step forward for the film series. … [the movie] is good, even better than the second movie. We sure hope that there would be more movies from the C.S Lewis’s novels.” Read the whole article HERE.

Stuff.co.uk gave the movie 4/5 stars. Here’s what they said of it: “The Chronicles of Narnia will never have the prestige or pretensions of the Potters or the Rings, but these films are still an enjoyable way to pass a couple of kid-friendly hours. More, please.” You can read the whole review HERE.

InMyCommunity also posted a review. The author wrote of her experience: “I felt I was a fifth Pevensie sibling – sister to Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy – magically transported from a shabby cupboard to the mythical realm of Narnia, where animals talked and I was deemed special; a queen no less.” … “Religion aside, the spellbinding story of good versus evil took me, and many kids, on a wild and wonderful ride that offered up escapism while triggering the imagination.” Those of you interested in watching the movie in 3D will like to know that she said, “The 3D special effects give this power-packed adventure even greater intensity; water often laps out at you and fire aggressively strikes forward (I wonder if Elizabeth was impressed.).” Read the whole article HERE.

The New York Times wrote an article about the Dawn Treader. While they didn’t specifically review the film, they talked about all the difficulties that occurred in making it, and about how this movie will have to do well to ensure the continuation of the series. I highly recommend reading the whole article HERE. It’s titled “Studios Battle to Save Narnia (From Grip of Sequel Fatigue).

First of all, I'm a Christian. Second, I love Narnia! I've been reading the books ever since I was little, and I've been following the Narnia fansites ever since the LWW movie came out. You might know me as The Bulgy Bear. I'm homeschooled, and I'm the oldest of five children.

  1. All of these are pretty key reviews. I read NY Times daily, and agree with their verdict, but InMyComunity has a pretty impressive review. Really enjoyed that one.

Still, before entering the movie theatre, most are going to check RottenTomatoes.com first, and the current reviews say the movie is rotten (58% right now). Hoping for more fresh reviews soon, so the opening weekend will be a blow-away success. I want to see the other four movies made!

  2. Although it’s not especially positive, I think it’s a good thing that the film is getting talked about in a paper as well read as the New York Times. I hope more of the big US papers have stories about the film in addition to their reviews. It will help raise awareness that the film is out there and coming very soon. After all, a lot of people read the news articles in the paper while often skipping the movie reviews.

  3. Whew! I just watched the movie again today… And its really good… The last scene where Aslan is talking to them is so moving! Its really touching i almost cried, but i didnt..even though im the only one inside the theatre (yes..i watched it in Starmall.. A local mall here but dont think that Narnia isnt popular here..maybe its just that bcoz the movie was just released in 3D,and also a lot of major malls in my city is also showing the movie.. Perhaps thats where they are watching it…) … And so for the 2nd time of watching it, I think i wana give the movie a 5 out of 5! Yes! One thing though… The scene where Edmund stab the Serpent didnt work for me a bit..the special effect is somewhat a bit mediocre…but even though, the movie is still excellent! 😉

  4. I just hope that critics stop comparing our beloved Narnia movie with other new generation fantasy movies or books out there… I mean come on! Narnia was created round 1950’s … And after all, i red an article saying that JKRowling did draw inspiration from the Narnia novels… Narnia is the original! Its the authentic! –.)

  5. Oh it pains me to see that critics have not done their research and write that it was filmed in New Zealand!

  6. I gotta say too about seeing the movie again, my second time was a joy. And the 3d in the film is great to absorb also.
Having some familiarity with it from the first time seeing it, really helped in becoming immersed in the film where as the first time i saw it, i didn’t understand the internal language of the movie in of itself as it was like hearing it all for the first time.
I had four people with me -all different age ranges-, three of whom hadn’t seen the movie before but they all really enjoyed it also, and the one who had seen it before got into it more the second time around also and another said wanted to see it again.
Definitely a wonderful fantasy/fairytale film, and brings the ‘the voyage of the dawn treader’ story to life, i think, in an artistic way.

  7. Time Magazing neglected to include Dawn treader in their holiday movie preview. I am appalled at them, unless they plan to review it in this coming week’s issue.

  8. Fox very kindly gave me a preview of the film yesterday and took 450 people to see it. It was a great film and I preferred to Prince Caspian. Eustace was superb and although they cut some bits and played with the plot a bit I did feel it worked and kept to the heart of the book. I wrote a short review if you’re interested here: http://bit.ly/fQ1mFm – I’m not a film critic merely a punter.

    • Thanks! I actually read your review yesterday, and I really enjoyed it! However, I’m not quite sure whether I’m supposed to post reviews from fans, or if I can only post reviews from critics. But I just want to let you know that if I could use fan reviews, I would definitely pick yours as one. Thanks!!
