Hunting for the truth behind ‘Narnia’

Over the Christmas holiday, my husband and I joined friends to see the much-talked-about “The Chronicles of Narnia — The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Originally, I was a bit reluctant about seeing a movie that had children written all over it. It’s one thing to go see a kids’ flick with our granddaughters, but quite another to see a movie featuring a lion with two other consenting senior citizens.

For me, this was definitely one those think outside the box moments. The real oddity was how little attention I’d given to the amount of marketing going on at my favorite Christian book stores about Narnia. I’d even been part of the purchasing public, seeing to it that the girls, both of whom enjoy reading, had their share of Narnia literature. I completely trusted these Christian retail stores to not mislead this get in-get out Christmas shopper.

So who is this C.S. Lewis anyway? To tell you the truth, I could only remember hearing his name on one other occasion, but apparently I wasn’t really paying attention to what was being said about him as an author, or as a Christian. I just wasn’t getting the picture as to why everyone seemed so excited to see this movie. But hey, when in Rome do as the Romans do. Much to my surprise the movie was delightful. C.S. Lewis had the God-given talent for being able to thrill the audience with fantasy while bringing to the forefront moral lessons coupled with spiritual implications.
