With the reports coming from the set, we’re starting to piece together just how The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will begin, when it finally reaches the cinema on December 10, 2010. If you’re trying to avoid film spoilers, you won’t want to read this, as I’m going to make some speculations based on an article from Goldcoast.com.au today.
The Southport School boarders’ dining hall was transformed into a movie set during filming for the third instalment of The Chronicles Of Narnia.
Boarders were fed throughout the day and night in a marquee set up on the school’s soccer oval.
The Bulletin understands several areas of the school feature, with the dining hall appearing at the start of the movie.
Earlier this week, we got word that there would be World War II style trucks that were recruited for the film. And we’d also heard of filming happening in schools from a few various sources. It appears that the film will likely begin, as the book does, with the introduction of the Pevensie’s cousin, Eustace Clarence Scrubb (…and he almost deserved it!). It will likely be in the dining hall, where he might be in school with Lucy (all speculation). All of this would be against a World War II backdrop, which is fine.. the War did last a long time, from September 1, 1939 – September 2, 1945. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader actually takes place in the summer of 1942, right in the middle of WWII, making it’s part in the film actually correct.
I’m liking the direction that it’s taking in that regard.
Update: Aslan’s Country, that new Narnia fan site created by some of our friends, has managed to get some pictures of the dining hall as well as some more information, that: “Edmund and Lucy will be in front of them with a bike talking. Edmund will look back at the two of them.”
Be sure to visit Aslan’s Country for a couple more pictures!
Lucy won’t be in the school. Eustace went to Experiment House. Lucy didn’t.
I don’t know if the book is ever explicit about where Lucy went to school. Aside from that, it would be a good set-up point for when she meets the Magician on the island.
Unless they are absolutely certain it will be at the start of the film, i’d be tempted to point out that VODT does actually have a dining room scene – at Coriakin’s House… just a thought.
Besides, Lucy, Edmund and Eustace all go to seperate schools as Avran pointed out.
Good call about Coriakin’s house! Didn’t think of that. Also, where in the book does it say what schools Lucy and Ed go to? I don’t have the books near by, and I guess I just never really payed attention to that part. haha
Pretty sure it mentions in Prince Caspain (near the start) that they go to single sex schools (the movie version also contained this detail in that the boys and girls had different school uniforms). Since VODT is the end of that same school year seen in PC, it would make it impossible for them to all be at the same school at the end of it.
Nice. That makes sense. Thank you! I was just thinking that, I believe, because of Experiment House, with Jill being there.
Note that Aslanscountry.com has photos of the dining hall. They also have heard that there will be an exterior scene with Edmund and Lucy and a man and woman. Eustace’s parents? Maybe this is the Scrubbs’ house?
Hmm, if it’s Eustace’s house, he has quite a dining room LOL. I REALLY don’t know what in the world they would be doing filing in a school dining hall… Perhaps the person who suggested it was Corikan’s house was right…
1. Lucy & Edmund are on holiday, not at school, when they are sent by their parents to stay with cousin Eustace. 2. Experiment House doesn’t show up until “The Silver Chair”. Lucy & Edmund are in Eustace’s home when they are pulled into the picture. 3. As for the separate schools Lucy & Edmund attend, the books never give their names. They imply that they are traditional schools of the time were boys & girls go to separate schools. Eustance, on the other hand, goes to a “modern” school with boys & girls together. (He meets Jill there.)
I agree!!!!! You are very right.
I am wondering if this is to be the school Eustace attends, and they are doing a scene or two to establish his character. C S Lewis describes what he is like at the beginning of the book, but this would make for pretty boring movie narration. It would be much better to show him at school to see what he is like. But, that’s all just speculation on my part.
Those are exactly my thoughts! Exactly! I only threw Lucy in there because I didn’t remember what they did with her character, and I figured that if Eustace went to school with Jill, then for the films, Lucy just might go there as well. But that’s only speculation on my part as well.
I think the it is strongly implied that Lucy and Edmund do NOT go to the same type of school as Eustace.
BTW, in your update, you do not quote what comes right before, which is vital to the context. The picture of the bikes in supposed to be in an area where there is a scene shot of “a man and a woman.” Could this be the soldier and nurse mentioned in the casting call?
Also, we should keep in mind that just because there are scenes being shot at “several areas of the school” does not mean these scenes are are supposed to be at the same location in the movie. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out on film!
in Pc you see them in different school uiforms they obviously go to single sex schools the boys go to one and the girls go to st finbarrs it said it at the beginning of PC
I figured they were different uniforms because boys would wear different uniforms than the girls at the same school, here in America. I am not well-versed in the education system in the UK.
The dining room looks like it could be Corikan’s, but I hope they will show a little of Eustace at his own school.
Extensive scene between Lucy, Edmund, man and woman? Their parents maybe??
It would be nice to see Jill Pole in the beginning.
Hey Paul!
Do you think it would be nice that Aslan let Edmund or Lucy to see one of them going to help Eustance and Jill fining Prince Rilian in The Silver Chair film?
Hello Ian!
I think it would be interesting to see Jill Pole, though it’s a little early to be casting that role. The fourth film hasn’t been green-lit yet, though they’re optimistic that it will be.
