Today the Austrailian Government has rated the Voyage of the Dawn Treader PG for “Mild violence and scary scenes”. They have also revealed that the film will have a duration of 112 minutes or one hour and fifty two minutes. The Austrailian Government’s film classification website’s page about The Voyage of the Dawn Treader can be found here. The British Board of Film Classification listed the film’s runtime on their website as 115 minutes and rated the film PG because it “contains moderate fantasy violence and scary scenes”. Last month NarniaFans.com reported that the Motion Picture Association of America rated the film PG “For some frightening images and sequences of fantasy action.” There have been some discrepancies between sources so the duration may not be entirely accurate. The version of the film I saw last week (read my comments about the film here) was 112 minutes long.

This RSVP form lists the run time of the version of the film that I saw as 112 minutes. I would also like to point out that there are some mistakes in this film summary. King Caspian and Reepicheep do not enter Narnia through a painting like the synopsis says. They are already in Narnia and on board the Dawn Treader when Edmund, Lucy, and Eustace come through the painting. I would also like to say that for this research screening they used the same RSVP forms that will be used for the NarniaFaith.com pastor only screenings of the film. This meant that when I registered to attend I had to list myself as the Pastor of the NarniaFans.com congregation. This must mean that I am officially the Pastor of NarniaFans.com
After the screening Walden Media co-founder Micheal Flaherty explained that one of their goals was to have a film that would be shorter than Prince Caspian. Prince Caspian was 150 minutes long. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was 143 minutes long. In my opinion, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has a great length. The film has a perfect pace and was able to include all of the key elements from the book into a shorter amount of time. I imagined that the film would have to be much longer to be able to capture the story of the book, but it was able to include all the key elements of the story in a shorter amount of time.
Well, I was hoping for at EAST 2 hours. My ideal would have been 2 1/2 hours. But you know the saying ‘short and sweet’ so still have high hopes.

I hoped it to be at least 2 hours long, but sometimes shorter is better. PC went a little bit longer than it should have so maybe this will be an improvement. Glad to see a PG rating, although I still would have like a PG-13. just saying
I’m glad it is less than two hours – I love films that can take you through an awesome story journey without taking up a lot of your time. Also, PG is definitely good for it – we are talking about Narnia, after all.
Hearing that you had already seen the movie, I was wondering if you could tell me if the scene where it seems like Susan and Peter are in Narnia with Edmund and Lucy walking from the earlier trailers is in the movie or not? I was kind of hoping for it (even though Susan and Peter are only mentioned in the novel).
They appear in the film, but they are only minor characters with cameos. They do not join the crew of the Dawn Treader like the trailer makes it seem.

It sort of bothers me that Lucy is questioning whether Aslan’s country exists. Is the trailer distorting her line, or does she actually think that?
My dad wants to see the pastor-only screening for VDT, but is having trouble with the whole same URL and e-mail thing…anyway, I’m kinda sad that it’s not 2 hours long, but maybe it’ll be great anyway. 🙂
