The discussion we had recently about small details in writing reminds me of something funny from an English class I had in grade school. (Yes, they had grade schools back in my Flintstone era, going AT LEAST as high as fourth grade!) There was a humorous lesson on how a change in punctuation marks could completely change the meaning of a sentence. Here are the alternate versions that were given of the SAME set of words:
* "The Indians," said Mary, "scalped General Custer."
* The Indians said: "_Mary_ scalped General Custer!"
