The town of Smoky Lake has not existed as long as Shilohsville has. The Smoky Lake Reservoir, fed by Smoky Creek, was created after World War Two, and the new availability of water encouraged housing development on the opposite side of the lake from the already-existing town. Lots of war veterans bought new houses in the new town; and some of these already had children, so the need for a high school arose fast. More families moving in, plus a small rural high school to the southwest closing down, increased the highschool need as early on as the 1980's, so a second Smoky Lake High School was built. I leave it to you to decide which is older, East or West; I never decided that.
