Jacob spent the next night tossing and turning. He coulden't stop thinking about Rachel. Her beautiful hair, her lovely eyes, everything about her. He'd only been with her for a day, but he already knew that he wanted to marry her.

He started thinkging that maybe, just maybe God had a plan in what happened with Esau. Maybe God had me flee to Haran for a reason. For Rachel.

He finally drifted off to sleep, dreming of his future.

"Wake up, sleepy head." Jacob heard as gentle, but strong hands shook him awake. "Come on, Jacob. Father said you could come with me to water the flocks this morning. That is...if you wanted to."

His eyes blinked open, slowly adjusting to the bright light streaming through the window. He saw Rachel, bending over him. He half sat in his bed and grinned at her. She was wearing a white dress, making her look young and alive. "I'd love to come." Jacob said with a yawn. "Give me a second to get dressed."

Leah and her mother were bustling around downstairs. "Good morning, Jacob." they said in cheerful tones. A warm piece of bread, smeared with honey was placed in his hands.

"Come on Jacob. We need to get a move on, so we can get there before it gets too hot." Rachel said as she took her shawl from the peg next to the door.

Jacob finished the last crumb of his delicious breakfast and hurried out the door, after Rachel. He grinned as he thought of all the day would hold for him. I can't describe this feeling, but it's wonderful. I feel...at peace. I don't feel as if I need to worry anymore. Thank you, Lord. He thought.

Thanks. Here's a little more.

Rachel smiled as she and Jacob walked step by step, accompanying the sheep to the well. She was still a little suprised that her father had allowed Jacob to come with her. But then again, she had always had her father wrapped around her finger. She had always been his pet.

I woulden't be suprised if Father is hoping to marry me to Jacob. I certainly woulden't mind. She thought with a sideways glance at the handsome young man. He really is so handsome...

Once they reached the well Jacob asked Rachel "Now that the sheep are at the well, do you want to go sit in the shade under that tree."

"Sure." she said. "Come on."

The couple sat under the tree for several hours, talking and enjoying each other's company. When the sun was high overhead and their stomachs began to rumble Rachel pulled out the picnic her mother had packed earlier that morning. They sat there, both thinking about what a gorgeous day it was, and what a good way to spend it.

Good additions, daughterofeve!! I've been terrible at keeping up; I'll try to get better at that! Your story is progressing nicely.

They returned from the pasture around four that afternoon. As they approached the house Jacob asked Rachel "There's something I need to ask your father. Could you take me to his chambers?"

"Certainly," Rachel replied. She escourted Jacob to her father's private chambers and then, curiostiy getting the better of her she stopped at the door to listen.

"Uncle Laban," Jacob said. "I would like your permission to stay here."

"Sure. I don't mind you staying a few extra weeks. If it's alright with your mother that is." Laban replied in a jovial tone.

"Well, that's not exactly what I meant. I was hoping to stay here indefinitly. I'm sure Mother woulden't mind. In fact, she hoped for me to settle down and marry here." Jacob replied nervously.

Rachel's heart skipped a beat as she listened to the muffled voices coming through the door. Please say yes Father. Please.

"If that's what you want, you have my permission to stay. Perhaps you will even wish to marry one of my girls." Laban said. "But I won't allow you to stay for nothing. You'll have to do a fair share of work."

"I'm not afraid of hard work, sir."

"Alright then. Tell my wife of your decision. She'll want to know for meals and things like that."

Rachel quickly stepped out of the doorway as Jacob came to open it. They collided and Rachel quickly made an excuse, not wanting Jacob to guess what she had been doing at the door. "Um,...er, I was, uh, I was going to take something upstairs for, uh, mother. Yes, I was on an erand for mother."

"Oh, well, I have something exciting to tell you." Jacob said with a big grin.

"Oh really. What is it?" Rachel said trying to act suprised, but inside she alredy knew and was incredibly excited.

"I'm going to stay here! For a long time. I'm going to work for your father in exchange for food and a house to live in." Jacob said. "I'll be looking forward to getting to know you better too."

"That's so exciting Jacob!" she said. He didn't just say I'll be looking forward to getting to know your family. He said "getting to know you." She thought as her heart sped up a little bit.

Jacob and Rachel

DaughterofEve,I came across this lovely story of yours when I was surfing the Web, and I registered here in order to praise it. It's delightful! Being a Rachel, I have a soft spot for the character Jacob, and I'm so pleased to read the description of him being "so handsome." I imagine him to have big brown eyes, too; in my mind, his hair is boyish and floppy, just covering the nape of his neck, like that of Nelson Muntz in THe Simpsons.

About 10 years ago, a friend warned me that people might think I was odd, or even dangerous, because I was in love with Jacob. To this day, I still can't see why, because I'm sure that if my name was Juliet, it would be considered OK to love Romeo!

Bye for now!

Oh that is sooo sweet and I'm positive DaughterOfEve will appreciate your comment! Since you just registered, you can go to the Introduction Thread and introduce yourself.

Oh, and thank you for reviving this thread! I've been looking for it for a long time. :)

Thanks.:)

Out of interest, has anyone read The Red Tent by Anita Diamant? That's another fantastic retelling of my favourite part of the Bible; it really brings the ancient world to life. But in the Red Tent, the young Rachel is not quite as sweet-tempered as in DaughterofEve's version.

I think it's a shame that very few picture-Bibles have good-looking drawings of Jacob; in fact, he looks pretty ghastly in many of them! But he's very cute in the Precious Moments Bible.
