Ages of Pevensie children?

I just began reading LWW again last night in preparation for seeing the movie this weekend. When I started to see all the promotional stuff for the movie one of the first things that hit me was how old Peter and Susan seemed. I've been looking for it in the book as I go, but I have not seen any mention of the children's ages yet. Perhaps I've missed it or they talk about it in one of the later books, but I do not remember. (I've read the series a few times, but the last time was over five years ago so I am a little rusty on some of the details). For some reason I was under the impression that Peter was about 13 and Susan about 12 in LWW, but the actor who is playing him in the film is about 17 so that made me think that perhaps Peter is older than I thought. Actually, I think an older Peter and Susan would make more sense. I find it a tad more plausable to have a 15-16 year old high king leading an army than a 13-14 year old king.

So, how old are they? Thanks in advance.

There's another thread where people ask that question and I cited the answer according to a book I have here. It says that Peter is 13, Susan is 12, Edmund is 10, and Lucy is 8.

Thanks for replying. Those were the ages I originally had in my head as well; although for the life of me I could not remember where I found them. Are they in LWW? I suppose my eyes could have glossed over it when I re-read the book last week.

I don't think they are listed, but I have a Narnia trivia book that was translated into German, and that's where I found the information.

hhmmm, in the book it says edmund is only a year older than lucy.

x

honestly i think i prefer the ages in the movie... in the book i even had the feeling that peter was atleast 15 and lucy was 9 leaving edmund at 10 and susan somewhere between 12-14

i just cannot see peter only being 13, dont know why... just seems odd having the oldest be only a little older than the youngest

Perhaps Lewis' lack of information on this subject is on purpose. Perhaps he wants us to decide for ourselves how old the Pevensie kids are so it's believable to each of us who reads the book.

When I was younger I was sure Peter and Susan couldn't have been any older than maybe 11 or 12, and Lucy couldn't be any older than 7, and Edmund was somewhere in between. But that was with my own child eyes. Now as an adult I feel Peter can't be any younger than 15 and Susan no younger than 13, and Lucy no younger than 8, once again leaving Edmund somewhere in between (my guess is 10 or 11) because now as an adult I feel these ages are appropriate for the things they do. So, perhaps Lewis wanted to be vague so that people wouldn't have preconceived notions on what kids of a certain age are capable of, and that way the entire story would be more believable to us.

I dunno, just a theory. :)

I understand what you mean. I think as a kid I always saw the Pevensies as younger, but I think now that I am older I cannot see them as little kids and being able to do what they did. Perhaps it is because I studied enough history in college to see it as unlikely for a child of even 15 or 16 to lead an army and live through a war like that. Even my favorite, Henry V was in his late 20s (and had years of training and an expert army with him) when he defeated the French at Agincourt. Lewis was a Medievalist, I'm certain he knew what was involved so I seems illogical that he would write the role of High King and general of the Narnian army for a youth of only 13?

For a Jr. member your point is very profound. But remember in the books it is said that the children are effected by the Narnian air so that they at older than they are. So how they act means little to how old they really are.

Not to come down on anyone, but I really meant the ages of the Pevensies in the books. Since the movies are new and I know have colored my perceptions, and I am sure they have influenced peoples as well, I just want people to be aware of it. The original goal was to look for clues to age in the various Narnian texts. The age of the actors in real life doesn't really matter, more often than not child actors usually play characters younger than themselves.

*steps off soapbox. sorry*

There are never any details given. My guess was always about what Pavender's origanal one was: Lucy in the 7-8 range, Edmund 9-10, Susan 11-12, and Peter 13-14

ya what i said is what it says in the book. i always thought they were 14, 12, 10, 9, but that's just me. the book also says they get a year older every book
